David & Vanessa’s Romantic Escambrón Beach Proposal | Puerto Rico Proposal Photographer
David and Vanessa’s love story began in the fourth grade and, thirteen years later, led to an intimate sunset proposal at Escambrón Beach in Puerto Rico. Discover how this emotional engagement unfolded through candid storytelling, heartfelt moments and cinematic portraiture in San Juan.
Thirteen years later…and forever officially begins.
There’s something profoundly beautiful about photographing a couple whose love story began long before adulthood ever entered the picture. In an era where relationships can sometimes feel fleeting, David and Vanessa reminded me what commitment truly looks like. Their story started in the fourth grade. Not high school. Not college. Fourth grade. When David initially told me they had known each other since “school,” I admittedly assumed he meant university. Instead, they had quite literally grown up together. Over the course of thirteen years, they built a relationship rooted in familiarity, loyalty, patience and deep emotional connection. Naturally, when the time finally came to propose, David wanted every detail to feel intentional and authentic to who they are as a couple.
David first contacted me from a Washington state phone number with a 360 area code, though he explained they are currently living in Oregon. Originally from Mexico, David shared that Vanessa is also Mexican, though she was born in the United States. Like many destination clients who travel to Puerto Rico for meaningful life moments, he wanted guidance from someone local who understood not only photography but the emotional rhythm of a successful surprise proposal. More importantly, he emphasized one thing repeatedly: Vanessa preferred intimacy over spectacle. She wasn’t looking for a public performance or an overproduced setup. She wanted something private, heartfelt and emotionally genuine.
The easiest “yes” after thirteen beautiful years together.
Without hesitation, I recommended Escambrón Beach. Over the years, it has become one of my favorite locations for marriage proposals in Puerto Rico because it offers everything necessary for a cinematic yet intimate experience. There’s a wide stretch of grass perfect for movement and candid interaction. The rocky shoreline creates visual depth and texture. Waves crash dramatically against the stones while the skyline of San Juan slowly begins glowing as sunset approaches. Most importantly, Escambrón has enough versatility to provide privacy while still delivering breathtaking scenery.
David trusted my vision immediately and we began planning the logistics together. Prior to proposal day, I sent him a detailed video showing exactly where I wanted him to position himself for the proposal. Specifically, there’s a large green bush near the grassy section that acts as a subtle visual anchor in photographs while also helping me anticipate movement and framing. I always encourage proposers to remain discreet with their phones throughout the experience because excessive texting or visibly checking messages can quickly make a partner suspicious. To David’s credit, he handled everything flawlessly. After receiving my instructions, all I got back was a simple thumbs-up emoji. Efficient. Calm. Under control.
Capturing unscripted love stories is why I do this.
On the evening of the proposal, I arrived early carrying nothing more than a beach lawn chair and my camera gear. I quietly positioned myself near the area where everything would unfold and waited patiently as golden hour slowly began painting the landscape with warm light. Around 6 p.m., I spotted David and Vanessa making their way up from the rocky terrain near the parking area toward the grass. At one point, David briefly glanced in my direction without Vanessa noticing, silently acknowledging that our carefully orchestrated plan was now in motion.
I noticed David carrying a gray blanket, which I assumed they planned on using while relaxing by the water. Immediately, I began photographing the smaller in-between moments that many people overlook but that I personally believe are essential to storytelling. I photographed them laying down the blanket, slipping off their shoes and settling into the environment together. Those seemingly ordinary interactions matter tremendously because they establish emotional context. They show the anticipation before the proposal itself. They show comfort. Familiarity. Ease. These are the images that transform a proposal gallery into a narrative rather than just a sequence of isolated moments.
Escambrón Beach delivered magic once again.
As the sun began descending lower into the horizon, David slowly guided Vanessa toward the exact location we had discussed beforehand. Judging by Vanessa’s body language, she sensed what was about to happen. Honestly, after thirteen years together, I think part of her heart already knew this moment had been coming for a long time. Later, she jokingly mentioned that their relationship had already lasted longer than some marriages, which made everyone laugh. Yet beneath the humor was a truth that made the proposal even more meaningful: this wasn’t impulsive love. This was enduring love.
Then came the moment itself.
David got down on one knee as waves crashed softly in the background and the Puerto Rico sunset wrapped the entire scene in warmth. Vanessa’s reaction was immediate and emotional. After her enthusiastic “yes,” she practically melted into his arms in disbelief. She couldn’t stop staring at the ring and, at one point, bounced around with the kind of pure excitement usually reserved for childhood joy. It was wholesome in the truest sense of the word.
From classmates to soulmates.
This is precisely why I love photographing marriage proposals so much. They are perhaps the single most unscripted romantic moment in a couple’s life. Weddings, while beautiful, often follow structured timelines and carefully curated schedules. Proposals are different. They exist in real time. Emotions spill out naturally. There are no rehearsals. No second takes. Just raw human connection unfolding organically in front of the camera.
Once the emotions settled slightly, I finally walked over and officially introduced myself to David in person for the first time. That’s actually fairly common in my line of work because most of my proposal clients are destination couples visiting Puerto Rico from all over the world. Vanessa was still glowing with excitement and could barely contain herself, which made it the perfect time to transition into what I call “intimate portraiture.”
Intimate proposals will always have my heart.
I strongly believe the portraits taken immediately after a proposal are often the most emotionally authentic photographs of the entire session. The emotions are still fresh in their faces. Their body language remains naturally affectionate and unguarded. During this portion of the shoot, I frequently use the short lighting technique, positioning myself opposite the primary light source so the shadow side of the face becomes more prominent. In this case, the setting sun acted as my natural light source and beautifully sculpted their features while maintaining softness and dimensionality.
Before arriving at the session, I had actually spent some time browsing Pinterest for inspiration because I instinctively felt David and Vanessa were going to photograph beautifully together. Thankfully, they fully embraced the creative process. Throughout the portrait session, I occasionally showed them the back of my camera so they could better understand the mood, prompts and poses I envisioned for them. They were incredibly receptive and collaborative, which allowed us to create images that felt both editorial and emotionally grounded at the same time.
Capturing unscripted love stories is why I do this.
As if the evening couldn’t get any better, Puerto Rico delivered one of the most spectacular sunsets I’ve seen in quite some time. The sky exploded with color and instantly transformed the atmosphere around us. Knowing we had limited time left with ideal conditions, I quickly pulled out my flashes and began experimenting creatively with the remaining light. Combining artificial lighting with the vibrant sunset tones allowed me to create dramatic imagery that still maintained the warmth and intimacy of the moment.
By the end of the session, I genuinely felt connected to both David and Vanessa. That’s another aspect of proposal photography that I deeply value. It’s not just about taking photographs. It’s about learning who people are. Understanding their journey. Observing their personalities and dynamic together. In many ways, proposals become an accelerated emotional introduction between photographer and couple.
Puerto Rico sunsets and a lifetime ahead together.
As a fun side note, I also discovered they’re both huge Seattle Seahawks fans. Naturally, I jokingly told them that this now gives me yet another reason to hopefully photograph their wedding someday because I certainly wouldn’t mind visiting the Pacific Northwest again.
The way she looked at him after saying yes says everything.
Congratulations to David and Vanessa on their engagement and on thirteen years of building a love story rooted in loyalty, friendship and patience. It was an absolute honor documenting such a meaningful chapter of their lives here in Puerto Rico.
Some love stories start in college. Theirs started in the fourth grade.
Icacos Island Proposal in Puerto Rico | Luxury Boat Engagement from Fajardo
A breathtaking surprise proposal at Icacos Island, Puerto Rico—planned on a boat from Fajardo and captured in golden hour perfection.
Romantic portraits on the beaches of Icacos.
Janee, a young woman from Los Angeles, California, reached out to me with a very specific mission. Her close friend Edward was planning to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Lupita, and Puerto Rico was the destination.
We jumped on a call to talk through the vision, and right away I knew this was going to be something special. They were considering a boat ride from Fajardo to Icacos Island—a remote, stunning cay off Puerto Rico’s east coast. The plan was simple but beautiful: snorkel, relax, and then find the perfect sandbar moment for Edward to get down on one knee.
I was all in.
The moments before the proposal are just as important.
They booked their experience with Snorkeling Puerto Rico, a charter company known for turning a boat ride into a full-on vibe—music, drinks, food, and a crew that keeps the energy up the entire way.
Fast forward to proposal day.
I arrived in Fajardo about 45 minutes early and checked in with Edward, only to find out they had hit unexpected traffic. No problem. I connected with the boat company, explained who I was and what I was there to do, and they coordinated everything with the crew. Our boat for the day was called The Kraken, led by Ricardo, with Elly, Georgie, and the rest of the team helping out.
The exact moment he got down on one knee.
To stay lowkey, I picked a seat near the bathrooms—out of the way, minimal attention. Ironically, Lupita ended up sitting right next to me. Thankfully, she stayed busy chatting with friends the entire ride, because I definitely didn’t have a backup story ready if she started asking questions.
Edward and I kept in touch by text throughout the ride. Once we reached Icacos, the plan kicked into motion.
At around 4:30 p.m., I got off the boat ahead of everyone else to scout the perfect proposal spot. I came across an old, narrow pier, but it felt too risky and impractical. As I moved further down the beach, I found it—a semi-secluded stretch of sand near where jet skis were dropping people off. It had just enough privacy, and more importantly, the sun would fall perfectly behind them.
To the victor goes the spoils!
That was the spot.
With the little signal we had left, I texted Edward: I drew a big “X” in the sand so he’d know exactly where to go. He reacted with a thumbs-up, and we locked in 5:00 p.m. as go-time.
I got into position first, playing the role of a casual landscape photographer—hiding in plain sight. Only their friends knew who I was, so everything stayed under control.
Then I saw them walking toward me.
She said yes—pure joy on the shoreline.
Camera up, settings dialed in, light shifting between sun and clouds… and then a funny moment—Edward suddenly turns around mid-walk. He had forgotten the ring with his friend Chris. Nerves will do that.
Once he got it, he walked Lupita over to the “X,” took her hands, looked her in the eyes, and said everything he needed to say. A few seconds later, he was down on one knee, opening the box to the ring she’d been waiting for.
She said yes.
A just-engaged glow in golden hour light.
Immediately, their friends rushed in, celebrating like their team had just won a championship. I captured it all—the raw reactions, the hugs, the chaos in the best way possible.
Afterward, I grabbed some group photos, a few shots with friends, and then pulled the couple aside for a dedicated session. For the next 45 minutes, we created some really powerful images. Chris stepped in as my assistant, helping me boom my flash so I could balance the natural light with a more dramatic, editorial feel.
By 6:00 p.m., we were back on The Kraken heading toward shore.
Ending the day with unforgettable memories at sea.
Once we docked, I congratulated Edward and Lupita, said my goodbyes, and made my way home.
Huge shoutout to Snorkeling Puerto Rico for helping me blend in seamlessly and making the entire experience feel effortless. If you’re thinking about proposing in Icacos Island, this is easily one of the best ways to do it.
A kiss to seal the deal.
A Surprise Beach Proposal in Puerto Rico | Ramón & Brit’s Romantic Engagement
Ramón and Brit’s love story began long before they even realized it. After attending the same high school years ago, their paths eventually crossed again in the most meaningful way. Ramón chose the beautiful beaches of Puerto Rico to ask the most important question of his life, creating a breathtaking surprise proposal filled with emotion, romance, and unforgettable memories.
There are moments in life that remind us how beautifully unpredictable love can be.
Ramón and Brit’s story is one of those moments.
The two actually went to the same high school. They knew of each other back then, passing through the same hallways and existing within the same circles of familiarity. Yet their lives never truly intersected in a meaningful way. They were simply two people who were aware of each other… nothing more.
Or so they thought.
The moment Ramón drops to one knee during this surprise beach proposal.
Years later, life would reveal something remarkable. Ramón and Brit eventually discovered that they had been closer to each other’s story than they ever realized. Their paths had quietly crossed long before the right moment arrived.
Sometimes love works like that. Two people can be right under each other’s noses without realizing that the person meant for them has been there all along.
When Ramón decided it was time to ask one of the most important questions of his life, he knew he wanted the moment to be unforgettable. He also knew the setting needed to match the magnitude of the moment.
Puerto Rico was the perfect choice.
A newly engaged couple celebrating their love in Puerto Rico.
With its warm Caribbean breeze, golden sand, and breathtaking ocean views, the island provides one of the most romantic backdrops in the world for a marriage proposal. For couples traveling from the mainland United States, Puerto Rico offers the magic of a tropical destination without the need for a passport.
Ramón partnered with the incredible team at I Do Proposal, a Puerto Rico-based proposal planning company known for creating beautifully designed surprise engagements. Together, they orchestrated a thoughtful setup on the beach that would set the stage for a moment Brit would never forget.
From elegant decorations to carefully planned timing, every detail was designed to make the experience feel intimate, emotional, and effortless.
That’s where I came in.
Golden light and ocean views create the perfect proposal backdrop.
As a Puerto Rico proposal photographer, my role was to quietly document the moment as it unfolded in real time. Proposals are one of the most exciting forms of storytelling in photography because they are completely unscripted. There is no rehearsal. No second take. Only a genuine moment filled with anticipation, nerves, excitement, and overwhelming emotion.
When Ramón finally dropped to one knee, the ocean behind him and the sand beneath his feet, Brit’s reaction said everything.
The surprise, the joy, the laughter, and the tears were all there.
Moments like these are why I love documenting proposals and elopements in Puerto Rico. There is something incredibly powerful about preserving the exact second two lives officially change forever.
In the end, Ramón and Brit left the island with more than just beautiful photographs. They left with the beginning of a brand new chapter in their story.
A quiet moment together after the excitement of the proposal.
Today, they’re back home in Pennsylvania celebrating their engagement with family and friends, reliving the memories from a moment that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
A special shoutout also goes to Ramón’s sister, Laiza, who came through in the clutch to help make the surprise possible. Every great proposal usually has a few secret collaborators working behind the scenes, and her support helped make the day even more meaningful.
To Ramón and Brit — cheers to a lifetime of adventure, laughter, and love.
And if you're dreaming about proposing to your partner in Puerto Rico, this island offers some of the most romantic locations imaginable. Whether you’re planning a surprise beach proposal, an intimate elopement, or a destination engagement session, moments like these deserve to be documented beautifully.
Because the day you ask the question is a story you’ll want to remember forever.

A Surprise Proposal During a Luxury Maternity Session at Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve, Puerto Rico
A luxury maternity session at Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve turned into something even more unforgettable — a surprise beachfront proposal in Puerto Rico. This destination photography experience blended emotional storytelling, editorial portraiture, and two life milestones into one beautiful evening.
Luxury beach maternity photography session in Puerto Rico at sunset.
Every so often, a photography session evolves into something far deeper than portraits alone. It becomes layered with anticipation, emotion, and moments that quietly change the trajectory of people’s lives. That was precisely the case when Brendon, a bodybuilding athlete visiting from New Jersey, reached out after discovering my work. The initial plan was straightforward: a maternity session in Puerto Rico while vacationing with his girlfriend Sara. What he revealed shortly after, however, added an entirely new dimension. He intended to propose at the end of the shoot.
Blending maternity portraiture with a surprise engagement proposal is not something I encounter often, yet it immediately felt compelling. It offered the opportunity to document two profound milestones simultaneously, all within the stunning setting of the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico, one of the island’s most elegant resorts and a venue I’ve grown especially fond of for weddings, elopements, and destination portrait sessions.
Discreet Planning Behind the Scenes
Romantic destination couple portrait with soft natural Caribbean light.
Executing a surprise proposal within an already emotional maternity session requires careful orchestration without ever disrupting the natural experience for the couple. Brendon collaborated with my good friends at I Do Proposal, who designed a minimalist, romantic beachfront setup that complemented the surroundings without feeling staged or excessive. The goal was intimacy, not spectacle.
Maintaining the element of surprise meant solving small logistical challenges quietly. My trusted contact at the resort, Pamela, graciously stepped in to retrieve the engagement ring beforehand under the guise of routine hospitality. That small act ensured Sara would remain blissfully unaware until the perfect moment arrived. Details like these often go unnoticed, yet they are essential in allowing authentic emotion to unfold uninterrupted.
Beginning the Maternity Portrait Session
Editorial maternity photography highlighting elegance and intimacy.
I arrived early to scout light and confirm the exact proposal location. The decorators had chosen a beautiful spot near the water, subtly different from our original plan yet visually stronger, offering both privacy and a breathtaking coastal backdrop. When I finally met Brendon and Sara outside their suite gazebo, their connection was immediately evident. Some couples naturally carry a quiet chemistry that translates effortlessly on camera, and they were certainly among them.
Sara’s maternity dress elegantly highlighted her early baby bump in a way that felt refined rather than overt. We began the session near a grassy knoll and reflective pond, creating intimate portraits that emphasized tenderness over posing. I leaned into short lighting techniques to sculpt dimension and mood while allowing the lush Caribbean landscape to frame them softly. Those early moments set a relaxed tone that carried beautifully throughout the session.
Moving Toward the Beach With Editorial Intent
Surprise proposal captured during a destination portrait session.
As we gradually made our way toward the shoreline, I allowed the environment to guide the session organically. Small pauses along the path became opportunities for portraits that felt spontaneous rather than directed. One particularly striking image emerged through a natural gap in a tree where Brendon gently held Sara’s belly while leaning close. It was understated, emotional, and effortlessly elegant.
Upon reaching the beach, a massive Puerto Rican flag waving near a palm tree stump immediately caught my attention. Incorporating it into wide compositions added both scale and narrative context, transforming simple maternity portraits into something that felt cinematic and editorial. The movement of the flag, the ocean breeze, and the warm light created a sense of place that elevated the imagery far beyond standard destination portraits.
Preparing for the Proposal Moment
Timeless maternity portrait emphasizing natural beauty and movement.
Timing a proposal within a portrait session is always delicate. There is a balance between allowing anticipation to build naturally while avoiding any sense of awkward delay. At one point, I asked Sara to turn back briefly for solo maternity portraits, which provided the perfect opportunity to discreetly pass the engagement ring back to Brendon. The added benefit was that these portraits turned out to be among the strongest of the session, thanks in part to Sara’s modeling background and her comfort in front of the camera.
As we slowly approached the decorated beachfront area, I kept conversation flowing in a relaxed way so the setup wouldn’t immediately draw attention. Eventually, intuition took over. Sara began sensing that something meaningful was about to happen. That shift in awareness often produces some of the most genuine expressions I capture.
An Emotional Beachfront Proposal
Destination photography session blending romance and storytelling.
When the couple stepped into the semicircle of flowers overlooking the water, I instinctively gave them space while remaining ready to document every second. Brendon spoke from the heart before getting down on one knee, and Sara’s reaction unfolded with beautiful authenticity. Tears, laughter, surprise, and joy blended together in a way no amount of posing could ever replicate.
Moments like these remind me why documentary-style photography resonates so deeply. Perfection isn’t the goal; truth is. Those fleeting emotional transitions are what couples revisit years later when they look back at their photographs.
After the initial excitement settled, I allowed Sara a few minutes to compose herself before transitioning into engagement portraits. The newly presented ring, elegant and timeless, naturally became part of the storytelling as they celebrated this new chapter alongside the anticipation of parenthood.
Ending With Editorial Portraits in Changing Light
Elegant couple portrait showcasing authentic emotional connection.
Just as we were wrapping up, a light Caribbean drizzle began drifting in. Rather than retreat, I leaned into the atmosphere by introducing off-camera flash to create dramatic editorial portraits against the fading sunset. The combination of soft rain, warm ambient light, and controlled highlights produced images that felt almost cinematic.
Unexpected weather often introduces character into photographs, and in this case it provided a striking, magazine-worthy conclusion to an already unforgettable session.
A Session That Celebrated Two Life Milestones
Sunset beach engagement photography with luxury destination vibes.
What began as a destination maternity session ultimately became a layered story about transition, commitment, and new beginnings. Documenting both pregnancy and a surprise engagement within a single evening presented creative and logistical challenges, yet it also reinforced why I’m drawn to this work in the first place. Photography has the unique ability to preserve not just events, but emotional thresholds.
Parenthood was on the horizon for Brendon and Sara, and their engagement marked another meaningful step forward. Capturing both milestones together created a narrative richer than either moment alone could provide. Experiences like this continue to affirm that the most powerful images rarely come from perfect conditions, but from genuine connection, thoughtful planning, and allowing life to unfold naturally in front of the lens.
And honestly, sessions like this are the kind of challenge I’ll gladly accept every single time.
A Wind-Swept Surprise Proposal in Ocean Park, Puerto Rico
A surprise proposal along the shores of Ocean Park, Puerto Rico brings together intention, emotion, and impeccable timing. With the help of I Do Proposal, Austin planned a heartfelt beach proposal that Bailey never saw coming—resulting in a deeply emotional and cinematic moment captured in real time.
When the moment feels effortless, the memories last forever.
Some proposals are meticulously planned down to the second. Others feel like a leap of faith—equal parts excitement, nerves, and love. Austin and Bailey’s surprise marriage proposal in Puerto Rico was both.
I was brought on by I Do Proposal, an up-and-coming marriage proposal planning company here in Puerto Rico, to photograph a heartfelt surprise proposal along the shores of Ocean Park. Their client, Austin, had one goal in mind: ask his longtime girlfriend, Bailey, to spend forever with him—somewhere unforgettable.
From Georgia to Puerto Rico: A Shared Beginning
A quiet beach, a deep breath, and one life-changing question.
The morning of the proposal, I reached out to Austin to go over final details. His phone number started with a 404 area code, one I know all too well. It turns out Austin and Bailey are from Georgia, a state where I once lived when I first moved to the U.S. That unexpected connection instantly broke the ice.
Austin works in cybersecurity, Bailey at a hospital back home, and the two have been inseparable for nearly six years. Like many couples, their journey has been built on shared growth, stability, and genuine companionship—exactly the kind of foundation that makes proposal days so emotionally charged.
The Location: Yardley Street Beach Access, Condado
Wind in the air, love everywhere.
While Ocean Park was the original vision, Katherinne, owner of I Do Proposal, selected Yardley Street in Condado for its discreet beach access and generous space. The entrance opens directly onto the sand, making it ideal for a private setup without feeling isolated—especially important for surprise proposals.
That afternoon, the wind was relentless, which meant timing was everything. The decor—minimalist and intentional—consisted of a circle of red roses near the water, rose petals inside the circle, and a chilled bottle of champagne with flutes waiting nearby. We waited until the very last second to place the final petals to keep them from scattering across the beach.
A Perfectly Executed Proposal
She said yes, and the world stood still.
Before the proposal, I gave Austin the usual rundown: where to stand, what to do, and—just as importantly—what not to do. No matter how many proposals I photograph (and I’ve shot over forty this year alone), the nerves never disappear. Asking someone to spend the rest of their life with you is a monumental moment.
As Austin and Bailey approached, everything fell into place.
Austin gently positioned Bailey against the wind, an often-overlooked detail that makes a world of difference. Hair flying forward during the proposal moment can block reactions and emotions on camera—something I always coach proposers on. He even remembered to carefully tuck her hair behind her ear at just the right moment.
Bailey’s reaction was pure, emotional, and completely unguarded. She didn’t see it coming at all.
After the “Yes”
Emotion over perfection—always.
Once the initial wave of emotions settled and I knew I had the proposal documented exactly as it deserved, I stepped in to introduce myself—usually to a newly engaged partner who is either overwhelmed with emotion or still processing what just happened.
This time, it was both.
Austin exhaled what felt like six years’ worth of anticipation, and we transitioned seamlessly into portraits. These two were a dream to photograph—affectionate, playful, and entirely wrapped up in each other. Their energy aligned perfectly with my approach to proposal photography: intimate, passionate, and real.
As the sun dipped lower, I closed out the session with flash photography, adding a cinematic edge to an already unforgettable moment. When couples are this present with each other, they forget the camera exists—and that’s when the magic happens.
Why Puerto Rico Is the Perfect Place to Propose
A surprise proposal done right feels timeless.
Ocean Park and Condado offer a rare combination of tropical beauty, accessibility, and privacy. Pair that with a thoughtful planner and intentional photography, and you’re left with something far more meaningful than a simple “yes.”
Austin and Bailey’s proposal wasn’t just a question—it was a chapter. And I was honored to document it.
Capturing the moment they didn’t even know was happening.
A Sunlit Marriage Proposal at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve, Puerto Rico
A heartfelt proposal at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Puerto Rico captures Myron and Devon’s love story. With sunflowers, champagne, and golden-hour magic, this destination engagement beautifully blends romance, storytelling, and stunning photography in one unforgettable tropical setting.
The white heart-shaped arch adorned with sunflowers and yellow petals, ready for a magical proposal moment.
When Myron first reached out to me about a month ago, he had a clear vision in mind: to propose to his girlfriend, Devon, in a way that was deeply personal and visually unforgettable. Just a month earlier, the two had welcomed a baby boy into their lives, so this proposal was about more than just romance—it symbolized the start of a new chapter as a family. He wanted to make the moment count, and he chose one of the most breathtaking venues for it: the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Río Grande, Puerto Rico.
Why the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Was the Perfect Choice
Hidden behind the greenery, I waited for the perfect moment to capture Devon’s surprise.
The Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve is not just another resort—it’s a destination known for its elegance, tropical scenery, and unparalleled service. Located along the northeastern coast of Puerto Rico, this luxury venue is surrounded by lush greenery, palm trees, and panoramic ocean views that make it ideal for engagements, elopements, and destination weddings. Its sprawling grounds, beachside gazebos, and refined architecture make it a dream setting for any proposal photographer in Puerto Rico. It’s no wonder couples from all over the world fly in to make their moments here truly unforgettable.
For Myron and Devon, the choice made perfect sense. It offered the privacy and beauty of a secluded destination while showcasing everything Puerto Rico is known for—warm weather, breathtaking sunsets, and a romantic energy that never fades.
The Virtual Meeting and the Perfect Alibi
It’s the little things…
Before the big day, Myron and I broke the ice during a virtual meeting. Devon happened to be shopping at a mall at the time, which gave Myron the perfect excuse to say he had a “client meeting.” In truth, I was that client. During our conversation, I got to learn more about their story—they’re from Cleveland, Ohio, and wanted to escape the freezing temperatures for something warmer and brighter. Puerto Rico, with its endless summer and natural beauty, was exactly what they needed.
The Planning and Design
Champagne in midair, laughter all around—a symbol of celebration and pure joy
As the proposal date approached, Myron decided to elevate the experience by adding a decorative element to the setup. I recommended a few local planners and decorators I often collaborate with, and he chose to work with Katherinne Moreira, founder of I Do Proposals, an emerging proposal planning company in Puerto Rico. Katherinne’s design vision for the moment was stunning: a white arch in the shape of a heart, soft yellow petals scattered on the ground, and bright sunflowers interwoven throughout the structure. The result was a scene that felt intimate, elegant, and full of joy—just like Myron and Devon’s story.
Arriving Early and Setting the Scene
Their baby’s stroller in the background, a subtle reminder of the love that started it all.
On the day of the proposal, I arrived early to capture photographs of the decoration and to finalize positioning. I sent Myron an edited image of the setup with two guiding lines: blue for him and pink for Devon. This small but crucial step helps me ensure everything aligns perfectly when the moment happens, taking into account wind direction, sunlight, and reflections—details that can make or break a proposal photo.
The chosen spot was one I had discovered weeks earlier during a previous engagement shoot. Hidden, romantic, and perfectly lit, it was ideal for a surprise. As I waited behind a large bush, camera ready, I saw the couple approach—Myron pushing a baby stroller, Devon blissfully unaware of what was about to happen. Including the stroller in some of the photos felt important to me; it symbolized the family they had already begun building together.
The Champagne Moment and the Yes
A close-up of their hands and rings—two hearts joined forever
When Myron finally reached the designated spot, he took a moment to gather himself before kneeling down. The proposal unfolded beautifully—pure emotion, no need for direction. There was a small hiccup when it came time to pop the champagne bottle, but with a quick tutorial on how to shake it just right, we got the cork to fly, filling the air with bubbles and laughter. Those shots—champagne midair, sparkling sunlight glinting off each drop—are among my favorites.
Chasing the Sunset
The Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve bathed in golden light as the couple embraces
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, I checked my watch: 6:00 p.m.—right on schedule. I had already arranged for a golf cart to pick us up and take us to another part of the Hyatt for golden hour portraits. The sunset, however, seemed to move faster than usual that evening, so we decided to linger a bit longer around the lobby area to take advantage of the last remaining light.
The Final Location and Creative Lighting
Dangling lights overhead created natural leading lines that drew the eye to the couple’s connection.
We stumbled upon an outdoor patio adorned with dangling lights that created beautiful leading lines overhead—a photographer’s dream. Behind it stood a majestic three-story fountain, cascading water illuminated by the soft ambient glow of the lights. To balance the lighting, I placed a flash behind the fountain and used a CTO gel to match the warm tones of the environment. The result was cinematic and magical—a perfect blend of technical precision and heartfelt storytelling.
Reflections on a Perfect Day
The weather held up beautifully, the clients were an absolute delight, and the entire session unfolded effortlessly. What made this proposal truly special wasn’t just the setting or the decor—it was the authenticity of the moment. Myron and Devon’s connection was raw and real, their baby boy added an emotional layer of meaning, and the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve provided a setting that elevated it all.
Every engagement I photograph in Puerto Rico reinforces my love for storytelling through images. It’s not just about taking pictures—it’s about preserving fleeting emotions, crafting timeless visuals, and honoring the unique journey of every couple who trusts me to capture one of the most important moments of their lives.
To Myron and Devon—thank you for allowing me to document your story. May your journey together, with your beautiful little boy, be filled with laughter, light, and everlasting love.
A Surprise Marriage Proposal at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Puerto Rico
Josiah and Rosie’s surprise proposal at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Puerto Rico was filled with love, laughter, and golden hour magic. From careful planning to emotional moments, discover how their story unfolded—and why Puerto Rico is the perfect place for unforgettable proposals.
The perfect setting: Josiah chose the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Puerto Rico, one of the island’s most beautiful venues, for his surprise proposal to Rosie.
Every proposal has a story worth telling, and Josiah and Rosie’s is one for the books. When Josiah reached out to me via my website about a month before his big day, I knew immediately that his vision was heartfelt. After selecting a virtual meeting through my contact form—a service I offer to make planning stress-free—we broke the ice online.
During our chat, Josiah shared that he met Rosie not on Tinder, as I mistakenly thought at first, but on Twitter. Their connection grew steadily, especially during the pandemic, when they leaned on each other through the uncertainties of Covid and quarantine. After five years together, Josiah was ready to take the next step: a destination proposal in Puerto Rico.
Choosing the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Río Grande
A love five years in the making: Josiah and Rosie met on Twitter and grew stronger together during the pandemic before saying “yes” in Puerto Rico.
Josiah selected the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Río Grande as the venue for the big moment. While the resort is also one of Puerto Rico’s most sought-after wedding venues, I’ve had the honor of capturing numerous proposals there. The tropical setting, lush greenery, and beachside sunset views make it an unforgettable backdrop for engagements.
Preparing for the Big Moment
She said yes: Rosie’s emotional reaction captured the surprise, joy, and love of the moment.
I never approach a proposal without preparation. For Josiah, we did a quick phone rundown where I emphasized two important things: staying calm and not rushing the moment. Too many times, clients have knelt down almost instantly after walking onto the scene, leaving little room to capture the buildup. I reminded Josiah that soaking in the moment—the handholding, the teary eyes, the anticipation—would make the proposal itself even more powerful.
Josiah was all in. Confident, steady, and sure about his decision. Since he also wanted video coverage, I arrived early on proposal day to scout locations. With input from my associate Carola and Hyatt’s on-site guide, Jacob, I discovered the perfect grassy area near Building 9. Framed by two large boulders, it felt private and symbolic—ideal for capturing a once-in-a-lifetime memory.
Behind the Lens: Planning the Shot
The moment is too good to not soak it in at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve
I met Josiah briefly to rig him with a microphone, though his choice of a white linen shirt posed a challenge. Pro tip: a tank top under light fabrics makes it easier to conceal audio gear. Once he was ready, I set up my Canon RF 100mm f/2.8 for video and my go-to Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 for photography, ensuring I could capture intimate moments without intruding.
As Josiah and Rosie strolled the sandy beach, I crouched behind a bush (a detail we laughed about later) and documented the buildup. Josiah spent nearly ten minutes speaking from the heart before finally pulling out the ring and dropping to one knee. Rosie’s reaction was pure joy—tears, hugs, and the sweetest yes.
Golden Hour Portraits
Golden Hour portraits: We headed to the west-facing beach to capture the newly engaged couple against Puerto Rico’s breathtaking sunset.
After the excitement settled, I shifted into portrait mode. The newly engaged couple was still glowing from the proposal, which always makes for authentic, emotional images. Because daylight was fading, we arranged for a trolley to take us to a west-facing beach spot for golden hour portraits.
The logistics weren’t seamless—the trolley was late, and I accidentally loaded into the wrong cart—but we eventually made it to the right place. There, I positioned Josiah and Rosie strategically to block background distractions, ensuring clean, distraction-free photos.
With my Godox AD200 Pro II flash, I balanced the colors of the sky against the couple’s embrace, using both wide and tight shots with my Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8. The tropical sunset did not disappoint.
Finishing at the Iconic Dome
An iconic finish: The proposal session ended at the Hyatt’s signature dome, with dramatic lighting that sealed the night with unforgettable images.
No proposal session at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve is complete without a visit to the dome, a signature photo spot for photographers. While the structure’s many pillars can be tricky for lighting, I came prepared with a second flash—my Godox AD100 Pro paired with a CTO gel. This created warm, cinematic tones against the deep blue evening sky, wrapping up the session with a dramatic flourish.
A Quick Turnaround and Lasting Memories
Within 24 hours, I delivered the full proposal gallery and video to Josiah and Rosie. Their story, from a chance meeting on Twitter to a destination proposal in Puerto Rico, reminded me why I love capturing these milestones. Every proposal is unique, but the joy, the anticipation, and the love are universal.
If you’re planning to propose in Puerto Rico, whether at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve or another stunning location, I’d love to help you capture it. From planning guidance to professional photography and videography, I ensure every detail is documented beautifully.
