Rumors swirl around it hasn’t hit her yet.

As a wedding and proposal photographer in Puerto Rico, I’ve been fortunate to witness countless love stories unfold in breathtaking locations across the island. But few experiences compare to the heartfelt and meticulously planned proposal of Yannick and Brionna at the luxurious Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Río Grande, Puerto Rico.

Yannick, a kind-hearted high school teacher originally from Georgia and now based in Houston, Texas, reached out to me all the way back in May. He had one mission in mind: to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Brionna, in paradise. What stood out from the very beginning was his dedication—not just to making the moment special, but to planning it all in between teaching classes. Our first FaceTime meeting was squeezed in right before one of his lessons started, a true testament to his commitment.

Planning the Perfect Proposal in Puerto Rico

Recently engaged woman showing off her luxury ring at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve

The ring shot.

Our first virtual meeting gave us a chance to break the ice and talk through logistics. While we had to pick up the conversation again later, we ultimately aligned on the vision—and that’s when the magic started taking shape.

The proposal date: June 7th. As always, communication with my proposal clients is kept discreet. Texting becomes the primary mode of contact, and I make sure to stay out of sight to preserve the element of surprise. As a seasoned proposal photographer in Puerto Rico, I know that anticipation is high and nerves can run wild. My job is not only to capture the moment but to ease those nerves.

But with Yannick? That wasn’t the case.

He was the picture of calm. Confident, soft-spoken, and clearly grounded in love, he seemed to know Brionna’s answer before he ever got down on one knee. That quiet confidence was both rare and refreshing.

Collaborating with Incredible Vendors

Man holding hands with woman at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve after a marriage proposal in Puerto Rico

That’s a happy face if I’ve ever seen one.

This proposal also introduced me to a fantastic new vendor: PR Foam by Designs, led by the lovely Leslie. She brought the "Marry Me" sign that anchored the decor and was an absolute joy to work with. We coordinated our positioning to ensure I could capture the sign, the moment, and the emotions from just the right angle—without being seen.

Pamela, a Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve team member, also played a pivotal role. She went above and beyond to help set the stage, organizing rose petals and even arranging a golf cart ride to the proposal spot. It’s this level of coordination that makes proposals not just successful but unforgettable.

The Moment of Truth

Silhouette of a man kissing a woman during a surprise marriage proposal in Puerto Rico

Gotta get in a good silhouette shot.

Hiding behind tall bushes near the decor setup, I tracked the couple’s approach, my Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 ready in hand. This lens is my go-to for discreetly capturing intimate moments from a distance, ensuring the surprise remains intact until the very last second.

And then—it happened.

Giggles, happy tears, and the unmistakable sound of joy filled the air. After Brionna said "yes," Yannick let out a triumphant “She said YES!” loud enough to echo all the way back to Houston. It was beautiful, spontaneous, and perfectly him.

When I finally introduced myself, I was met with a bear hug from Yannick and happy tears from Brionna. A quick makeup touch-up later, we headed to the beach for romantic, sun-drenched portraits against the golden shoreline.

Capturing Iconic Puerto Rican Backdrops

Smitten.

No shoot at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve is complete without photos under the iconic dome—an architectural gem beloved by local wedding photographers. This was my first time shooting there, and it felt like a rite of passage. As someone who’s recently delved deeper into flash photography, I saw the dome as the perfect canvas to flex some creative lighting.

With the couple posed center-dome, I used a diffused soft box and two strategically hidden flashes with colored gels. The result? A majestic blend of warm sunset hues and soft lighting—dramatic, romantic, and unforgettable.

Why Puerto Rico is Perfect for Proposals

Rite of passage.

For couples seeking a unique, romantic, and visually stunning place to start forever, it’s hard to beat this island. And if you’re looking for a proposal or wedding photographer who knows how to blend artistry with emotion, you’ve come to the right place.

From the planning to the lighting, from hiding in the bushes to sharing hugs under domes, this is what I live for. Helping couples create and capture memories in Puerto Rico that will last a lifetime. If you’re ready to take the leap and propose in Puerto Rico, let’s make it epic.

Celebrating a Milestone Birthday in Old San Juan with a Luxury Portrait Session

Lina celebrated her milestone birthday with a golden hour photo session in Old San Juan. From Palacio Provincial to El Morro, we captured her vibrant spirit with editorial-style portraits. This blog shares her story and the magic of combining flash photography with Puerto Rico’s timeless charm.

The incredible Lina

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of photographing Lina, an event planner from Sunrise, Florida, who was visiting Puerto Rico to celebrate a milestone birthday. What made this session especially meaningful was that Lina found me through Instagram—after seeing a family session I shot for a former wedding client from 2022. She reached out through my website and shared that, while it was rare for her to plan something just for herself, this birthday felt like a special moment she wanted to commemorate.

Her one request? To make the photos feel Puerto Rican—visually rich, nostalgic, and personal. Old San Juan immediately came to mind for both of us. With its cobblestone streets, Spanish colonial architecture, historic landmarks, and waterfront views, it’s the perfect setting for portraits that celebrate both heritage and beauty.

Bringing the Vision to Life in Old San Juan

Photoshoot in Old San Juan of a woman by the bushes

Everything is a picture waiting to happen in Old San Juan

To help bring her vision to life, I brought along my assistant Bryan, who not only lives in Old San Juan but also specializes in helping me set up off-camera flash, which is one of my favorite ways to create dimension and drama in natural-light environments. There's something incredibly powerful about combining Golden Hour sunlight with a touch of flash—it creates portraits that are luminous and layered, perfect for capturing personal milestones.

We met around 5:45 p.m., just in time for that golden-hour glow. Our first stop was Palacio Provincial, a stunning boutique hotel that serves as the quieter sister to the well-known El Convento. With its intimate charm, grand staircase, and historic façade, it was the ideal place to begin.

From there, we strolled through the vibrant streets of Old San Juan, snapping spontaneous walking shots and using local greenery to frame Lina against the city’s beautiful textures. We headed toward La Puerta de San Juan, the iconic red gate that once served as the city’s main entrance. Along the way, I pointed out that “everywhere you look in Old San Juan is a possible picture—if you look closely enough.” That kind of visual storytelling is what keeps this location fresh every single time I shoot here.

Signature Shots with a View

Tomás is loving life

As we made our way up to La Rogativa, I captured one of my signature shots—a dramatic flash-lit portrait featuring the garita, the iconic sentry box that overlooks the bay. This shot has become something of a calling card for me on social media, and I love how it blends artistry, architecture, and emotion.

Our final stop was Castillo San Felipe del Morro, more commonly known as El Morro. It’s arguably the most recognizable landmark in Puerto Rico and offers one of the best sunset views on the entire island. From this vantage point, you can take in the golden horizon as sailboats and ships slowly make their way into the harbor.

Bryan and I got extra creative with our lighting setup, even incorporating a massive cruise ship that happened to be passing by. The mix of golden sky, textured stone, and crisp flash lighting made for a set of images that felt both cinematic and deeply personal.

Celebrating with More Than Just Photos

Leading lines to Lina

After the shoot, Lina was so thrilled with the photos—just from what she saw on the back of my camera—that we invited her to join us at Taberna Lúpulo, a popular local bar known for its craft beer selection and laid-back vibe. We spent the rest of the evening enjoying snacks, drinks, and great conversation as if we had known each other for years.

It was the perfect way to wrap up a session that felt less like work and more like celebrating with an old friend. This is why I do what I do—not just for the photos, but for the moments of connection and joy that happen along the way.

Surprise Beach Proposal in Luquillo, Puerto Rico: How Shawn Popped the Question at La Pared

Shawn’s surprise proposal to Alanise at La Pared in Luquillo, Puerto Rico was filled with emotion, thoughtful details, and a dash of tropical unpredictability. With the help of The Heart Bandits and a few clever tricks behind the camera, I had the honor of capturing every unforgettable moment.

Man kneeling down at Luquillo during a marriage proposal in Puerto Rico

The climactic moment and happiness that ensued

If you’ve been dreaming of a beach proposal in Puerto Rico, this story is for you. Set against the stunning backdrop of La Pared in Luquillo, a scenic beach town on the island’s northeast coast, this surprise proposal was romantic, thoughtful, and filled with meaning. With The Heart Bandits on planning duty and my camera ready to capture every second, it was the perfect blend of love and logistics. Let’s dive into how Shawn pulled off this unforgettable moment for Alanise.

Why Luquillo, Puerto Rico Was the Perfect Proposal Destination

He did good

When Shawn began planning the proposal, he knew it needed to be special—and personal. Luquillo Beach offered the ideal blend of beauty and sentimentality. Known for its surf culture and less-crowded shoreline, La Pared served as a quiet, stunning canvas for his big moment. Even more meaningful? Alanise has Puerto Rican roots, and this location added a personal, cultural connection that made the day even more memorable.

Meet the Couple: Shawn & Alanise

Best picnic ever

Shawn and Alanise are both active-duty members of the United States Air Force, stationed roughly 40 minutes outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. Shawn originally hails from Long Island, New York, and Alanise’s family is from Puerto Rico—making this a destination proposal that felt like a homecoming.

The timing couldn’t have been more poignant. Taking place just after Memorial Day, it was a powerful reminder of their service and love. I made sure to personally thank them both for their commitment and sacrifice.

Pre-Proposal Planning: Nervous Groom, Stealthy Photographer

Couple embracing each other in Luquillo during an engagement session in Puerto Rico

Kids

A few days before the big event, I reached out to Shawn to check in. I always like to connect with my grooms ahead of time—this helps ease nerves, refine the vision, and reassure them that they’re in good hands. Shawn was excited, a little anxious (who wouldn’t be?), but ultimately ready to take the leap.

On proposal day, I arrived early to scope out the scene and meet with the decorator on-site. La Pared is beautiful but wild—it’s more of a surf beach than a lounging spot. There was a fair amount of debris and uneven sand, but she made it work, setting up a gorgeous floral arch that looked straight out of a Pinterest board.

Battling the Elements (Like a Pro)

Couple embracing at La Pared Beach in Luquillo during a marriage proposal in Puerto Rico

Surreal

Of course, Puerto Rico weather can be unpredictable. Light rain came and went in ten-minute intervals, prompting a bit of concern from Alanise’s father. I reassured him that I’d been monitoring the radar and the drizzle would pass soon—which it did.

Knowing we were shooting on the east coast, I didn’t count on a golden sunset. Instead, I adapted my setup to use the Sun as a key light, which helped add beautiful, natural dimension to their photos. I even brought a folding beach chair and pretended to watch the surfers—just another day in the life of a stealthy proposal photographer!

The Signal, the Moment, the YES

Couple celebrating after a successful marriage proposal in Puerto Rico

Arms raised in a V

As Shawn and Alanise walked hand in hand down the beach, I knew we were getting close. I flipped on my GoPro Hero 13, mounted to my Canon R6 Mark II, to record the entire moment from my point of view.

Our secret signal? A twist of his diamond stud earring. That was my cue. As soon as I saw it, I sprang into action, photographing the entire proposal in both portrait and landscape mode to give them a full range of storytelling images.

Of course, nothing ever goes perfectly—a free-spirited photographer perched on a nearby boulder photobombed most of my wide shots. 😅 But with a little Photoshop magic, I ensured that nothing distracted from the emotional power of the moment.

Post-Proposal Celebration: Picnic, Portraits & Flash Magic

Couple kissing in the sunset taken by a marriage proposal photographer in Puerto Rico

Bliss

After Alanise said “yes”—with tears, kisses, and so much joy—we transitioned into a romantic picnic setup, complete with champagne, florals, and heartfelt candid moments.

As the sun continued to drop, we moved to the shoreline for some editorial-style portraits, followed by a bold flash photography session to close out the evening with a dramatic, high-fashion vibe. I love combining natural light and artificial lighting to create galleries that are both timeless and cinematic.

Final Thoughts and a Note to Future Clients

Flash photography of a recently engaged couple in Luquillo, Puerto Rico

Epic

I’m absolutely thrilled with how these images turned out, and even more grateful to have witnessed such a meaningful chapter in Shawn and Alanise’s love story. Being a proposal photographer in Puerto Rico means I get to experience these once-in-a-lifetime moments—and I never take that for granted.

If you’re planning a surprise proposal in Puerto Rico, I’d love to be part of it. Whether you're working with The Heart Bandits or organizing something on your own, I’ll be there to capture every second with care, creativity, and a whole lot of heart.

A Surprise Marriage Proposal at El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo, Puerto Rico

When Sean reached out to plan a surprise proposal for his girlfriend Carson at El Conquistador Resort, I knew it was going to be special. With secret texts, a hidden camera, and the perfect sunset, this Fajardo engagement turned into one of the most heartwarming moments I’ve had the honor to capture.

Man proposing to woman on the beach at El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo, Puerto Rico

The proposal

Sean, a young man from the Boston area, reached out to me through my website with an exciting mission: he wanted to propose to his girlfriend, Carson, during their trip to Puerto Rico. His chosen venue? The breathtaking El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo—a place I’d previously experienced for corporate events, but never through the lens of love and nuptials.

Needless to say, I was thrilled.

The resort is vast and filled with hidden gems, and I was excited to explore it from a fresh perspective. As we approached the big day, Sean and I kept in contact—quietly. He had to be stealthy, of course. At times, he’d sneak off under the guise of a bathroom break just to text me updates. In a hilarious twist, he even saved my contact as “Uncle” on his phone to avoid raising any suspicion. Now that’s commitment!

Setting the Stage

So wholesome

On the day of the proposal, I packed up my essentials and hit the road around 3 p.m. Fajardo is about an hour and fifteen minutes from where I’m based, so I wanted to arrive with time to scout the exact location Sean had chosen.

He had arranged for the proposal to happen right beside Coquí Water Park, one of the resort’s most iconic spots. At the entrance, I met Fabiola, a newly hired staff member in charge of checking guests into the park. I quickly let her in on our covert operation. She was thrilled to play a role in the surprise and agreed to act as a cover—pretending I was just a guest asking for towels when Sean and Carson walked by.

The Moment Unfolds

Sailboat on the ocean with a recently engaged couple in the foreground at El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo, Puerto Rico

Let’s sail this life…together

Not long after, I saw them: Sean in a green shirt and khakis, Carson in a flowing green dress—just as he had described. I discreetly grabbed my Canon EOS R6 Mark II, paired with my RF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L USM lens. This is my go-to setup for surprise proposals in Puerto Rico because it lets me stay hidden while capturing crisp, intimate moments from afar.

I found cover in the nearby bushes (yes, bushes!) and started snapping shots as the couple approached. Within moments, Sean dropped to one knee and pulled out the ring.

Carson’s reaction was absolutely priceless—one of the most genuinely emotional responses I’ve had the pleasure of capturing. Her face radiated shock, joy, and pure love. It was wholesome, magical, and completely unscripted. Even as I write this, I’m not sure it’s fully sunk in for her yet!

Capturing the Memories

Couple enjoying the sunset at El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo taken by a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico

Sunkissed

After the big moment, I introduced myself and showed them the hidden Insta360 X3 camera mounted on my main camera body, which had captured everything in video format. This is something I love offering to couples—an immersive way to relive such a powerful moment.

We then moved into our portrait session. I worked with the beautiful natural light until sunset, then switched to my flash kit, using the Godox AD200 Pro Mark II to create dynamic, balanced shots that honored both the couple and the breathtaking Fajardo landscape.

Caught in the Rain, Covered in Love: A Piñones Proposal Story

When Jesse planned a surprise proposal in Piñones, Puerto Rico, he had no idea the rain—and fate—would both play major roles. With help from The Heart Bandits and a personal connection that brought us full circle, this unforgettable beachfront moment was one for the books.

Surprise marriage proposal in Puerto Rico taken by a luxury wedding photographer

The pinnacle moment.

Yesterday, I photographed yet another surprise marriage proposal—my 15th in just 3 months (possibly a personal record). Once again, I had the pleasure of teaming up with The Heart Bandits, one of the world’s top luxury proposal planners.

This time, it was Jesse who was ready to get down on one knee and propose to Talisha, the woman he met during Super Bowl weekend a few years back. From that weekend on, they’ve been inseparable. He felt it was finally time to cement the love they’ve built together.

Man and woman embracing after a surprise marriage proposal in Puerto Rico shot by a destination wedding photographer

Pure

As is tradition for me, I gave Jesse a call the night before. I always like to have a quick “jitter-management” conversation with the groom-to-be—it’s a nerve-racking moment for anyone, and I know he was feeling the weight of it.

As I’m dialing, I notice his area code: (954). That’s Broward County, Florida, a place I once called home for six years. When Jesse picks up, we immediately hit it off—turns out he currently lives in Miramar, the exact same city I used to live in during my time in South Florida. That shared history broke the ice instantly. He knew he was in good hands, and we quickly went through the checklist of what to do and (more importantly) what not to do.

Couple calling their family after a successful marriage proposal in Puerto Rico

Gotta call the family.

Before we hung up, Jesse told me he was feeling much more confident about the big day ahead. And I don’t blame him—it was going to be one of the most important days of his life.

This was a morning proposal, something I don’t typically do (especially when Golden Hour lighting is so coveted). We were scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in Piñones, a coastal sector of Loíza, Puerto Rico, known for its vibrant beaches and Afro-Caribbean roots.

Woman holding champagne with luxury wedding ring during a marriage proposal in Puerto Rico

The ring

Now, let me tell you—it had been raining nonstop for nearly three weeks. We were on high alert watching the weather, just like I had to do for my previous proposal shoot. I even got hit with a heavy downpour on the drive to the location and genuinely feared we might have to reschedule.

I followed the pin Michelle sent me via email, only to find out the decorator had set up seven minutes away from that spot. Thankfully, I’m ridiculously punctual, so I had plenty of time to double back and make it to the correct setup.

Couple kissing after a marriage proposal in Puerto Rico shot by a destination wedding photographer

Palm trees with the leading line.

Funny twist—when I arrived, there happened to be a surf contest happening about 300 feet away. Perfect! These events always require us to “hide in plain sight” so we don’t spoil the surprise for the bride-to-be. I blended in perfectly with the crowd.

I spotted Jesse walking through one of the beach’s man-made entrances, and quickly turned around to make some last-minute adjustments to my gear. Specifically, I fine-tuned my K&F Concept 3-in-1 filter—a combo ND, circular polarizer, and black mist I had picked up specifically for these types of shoots. It helped me tame the harsh sunlight, eliminate glare from the ocean and their jewelry, and create that dreamy bloom effect photographers call halation. The filter was a game-changer, especially with the still-overcast skies from all the recent rainfall. It helped their colors pop.

Creative portraiture of a couple on the beach shot by a luxury destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico during a marriage proposal

Offset but in love.

Then—right after Talisha said a resounding “YES!”—it started pouring. I came prepared. I darted to my bag, grabbed the umbrella I knew I’d end up needing, and sprinted back through the sand to cover the couple. They were so thankful—not just for the shelter, but for the fact that someone was looking out for them in the middle of the chaos. We huddled under the umbrella for about 15 minutes as the rain and wind hit us from the side. My camera gear is weather-sealed enough for a light drizzle, but this was pushing it. And then—the Sun broke through.

We were all relieved and so grateful. I used that moment to do what I do best: capture candid portraits from a safe distance, with gentle direction when needed. That’s essentially my style—photojournalism with a creative twist. It's what I’m known for here in Puerto Rico. The rest of the session went beautifully. They were all smiles. And honestly—so was I.

Despite cloudy weather, stunning corporate headshots and portraits were captured using professional lighting techniques. Perfect for anyone seeking branding or headshot photography in Puerto Rico.

Dianaliz

As a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I often find myself collaborating with incredibly talented vendors in the local wedding industry. One of those professionals is none other than Dianaliz Maldonado, better known as @dolitabeauty on Instagram. She's one of the most sought-after hair and makeup artists in Puerto Rico, and someone I’ve had the pleasure of working with on many wedding days over the years.

Recently, Diana reached out to me for a more personal project — she was ready to refresh her branding with updated corporate headshots and lifestyle portraits that better reflected her aesthetic and evolving business. As someone who’s passionate about helping fellow creatives shine, I was more than excited to support her vision.

Location, Light, and a Little Weather Challenge

Hair and makeup artist posing for a Puerto Rico wedding photographer

It’s all about the blazer

We met at her apartment complex, which had a stunning communal area that immediately caught my eye. As a Puerto Rico wedding photographer, I’m always scouting for beautiful, natural-light-filled locations — and this space delivered. However, not long into the session, the weather turned overcast, forcing us to pivot from our original outdoor plan. That’s where experience and equipment come into play.

Over the years, I’ve grown comfortable with adapting to unpredictable lighting situations — a skill that’s just as valuable in branding sessions as it is on wedding days. I used a combination of flash photography and light modifiers to simulate natural sunlight, ensuring every portrait retained a soft, flattering glow despite the cloudy skies.

Tools of the Trade

Relaxed

For this shoot, I relied on gear I trust. I used the Canon R6 Mark II paired with my RF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L USM lens — a favorite combo for crisp, flattering portraits. Lighting was powered by the newest AD200 Pro Mark II and the V100 from @godox_global / @godoxlighting, which allowed me to work efficiently and creatively despite the change in conditions.

Whether I’m photographing a luxury proposal, a destination wedding, or a branding session, having the right tools allows me to deliver polished results my clients can confidently use to promote themselves.

Branding That Works as Hard as You Do

Corporate headshots for a hair and makeup artist in Puerto Rico

Boss lady

As a corporate headshot photographer in Puerto Rico, I believe every creative entrepreneur deserves photos that reflect their professionalism, personality, and passion. For Diana, these images weren’t just for a website or Instagram grid — they were about communicating the care and expertise she brings to every client.

She isn’t just a talented stylist — she’s a true collaborator, one who understands the pace and pressure of wedding days and still manages to keep her clients calm, glowing, and ready to shine. I’ve witnessed this time and time again while photographing weddings alongside her.

So if you’re searching for Puerto Rico hair and makeup artists who bring both skill and heart to the job, I wholeheartedly recommend Dolita Beauty. And if you’re a creative, small business owner, or service provider looking to elevate your brand with updated headshots or portraits — I’d love to help you tell that story.

Posing Is Dead: Why Your Wedding Deserves to Be Documented, Not Directed

Discover why traditional posing is fading in modern wedding photography. Ideal for San Juan weddings and destination weddings in Puerto Rico, this post explores a candid, documentary-style approach that captures real emotions and unforgettable, unposed moments. Perfect for couples seeking authenticity.

Luxury wedding dress on bride at White House Bridal taken by a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico

Bury it.

There’s a quiet shift happening in the world of wedding photography. It’s subtle, but powerful.

Couples are beginning to realize something:
They don’t want to be posed.
They want to be present.

The Problem With Over-Posing

Bride getting her hair done shot by a Puerto Rico wedding photographer

Be you.

Traditional wedding photography often involves a lot of staging.
“Stand here. Tilt your head slightly. Hold hands, but not too tightly. Look at the camera. Smile.”
Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

But here’s the thing: when you're being told what to do all day, you’re not really experiencing your wedding—you’re just moving through it.

Over-posing can:

  • Pull couples out of the moment

  • Disrupt the emotional flow of the day

  • Turn meaningful moments into photo ops

  • Add unnecessary stress to an already full day

Weddings are emotional, sacred, messy, joyful, chaotic. They're alive. The more we try to choreograph them, the more we lose the essence of what makes them worth remembering.

What Couples Actually Want

Luxury wedding dress in Puerto Rico taken by a professional wedding photographer

Truth bomb

Today’s couples are craving something deeper than the “perfect shot.”
They want the truth.
They want photos that feel like them.

This means:

  • Laughing mid-vow because someone cried too early

  • A crooked boutonnière that stayed crooked all day

  • A sweaty dance floor where no one looks “camera-ready” but everyone looks alive

This is where documentary-style wedding photography thrives.

Guidance Over Posing

Bride getting ready at White House Bridal taken by a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico

Cute

Now, let’s be clear: this doesn’t mean there’s no direction at all.
Good photographers know how to guide a couple into beautiful light, flattering angles, and meaningful moments—without interrupting the emotional flow.

There’s a big difference between saying:

“Stand here and smile.”

And saying:

“Hold each other like you just realized you’re officially married.”

It’s not about the pose.
It’s about the energy.

The Result: Timeless, Honest Photos

Luxury wedding veil at White House Bridal taken by a Puerto Rico elopement photographer

Right…?

When couples are free to be themselves, the camera becomes a witness—not a director.

The result?
Photos that actually mean something.
Not just pretty. Not just “Pinterest-worthy.”
But emotionally charged, soul-stirring, and real.

Posing Isn’t the Enemy—But It’s No Longer the Star

Bride getting ready at White House Bridal shot by a luxury wedding photographer in Puerto Rico

Classy

There’s still a place for a beautifully composed portrait or a moment of stillness. But those shouldn’t be the standard—they should be the exception. The real gold lies in the unfiltered, unposed moments.

Moments you don’t even remember happening until you see them in your gallery and suddenly feel them all over again.

Let the Day Be What It Is

Luxury bridal accessories on a bride at White House Bridal

Attention to detail

If I could give couples one piece of advice, it would be this:
Let your wedding day unfold. Don’t force it. Don’t over-stage it. Just live it.

Let your photographer tell the story—not write the script.

Because your story deserves to be told the way it really happened.
With all the joy, chaos, beauty, and love that made it yours.

Final Thoughts

“Posing is dead” isn’t about throwing out every tradition.
It’s about letting go of perfection in favor of presence.

And in the end, that’s what makes wedding photos unforgettable.

If you’d like to have me be your wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, now’s the moment to send me a message and get in touch. Talk soon! -F

Golden Hour at Los Morrillos Lighthouse: A Family Portrait Session Worth the Hike

A breathtaking Cabo Rojo family photoshoot at Los Morillos Lighthouse, blending natural light with flash photography for stunning golden hour portraits. A destination session capturing love, light, and legacy in Puerto Rico.

Family posing in front of Los Morrillos Lighthouse in Cabo Rojo taken by a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico

The Nelsons

As a destination wedding and portrait photographer based in Puerto Rico, I’m often called to chase light—and this time, it led me to the cliffs of Cabo Rojo.

A few months back, my close colleague and fellow photographer Karen referred me to a family seeking a photo session at Los Morrillos Lighthouse. Karen, who frequently travels from Jacksonville, Florida to Puerto Rico, connected me with Ashley—a passionate mother and photography enthusiast eager to document her family’s love against one of the island’s most dramatic backdrops.

Ashley and Brandon

Ashley and her family were also visiting from Jacksonville. She had a vision: golden hour, sweeping ocean views, and the kind of warmth only the Puerto Rican sun can provide. We connected instantly, exchanging inspiration and planning the details for a family session that would commemorate their time on the island.

This past weekend, that vision came to life.

Family

To get to Los Morrillos Lighthouse, I left my home base in Guaynabo and made the two-and-a-half-hour trek to the island’s southwest coast. Ashley, in a well-meaning attempt to be helpful, shared her live location instead of a dropped pin—which meant I first showed up at her Airbnb. We both laughed it off, then caravanned to the lighthouse, bonding over our mutual excitement for what was to come.

Once we arrived, the adventure continued. The gate leading to the cliffs has been closed for a while now, so we parked our cars and hiked roughly twenty minutes through rocky terrain. I had my trusty Peak Design Travel Bag strapped on, filled with nearly 40 pounds of gear—camera bodies, lenses, lighting equipment, and a heavy-duty softbox, because I knew I’d want to work with both natural and artificial light.

Brother and sister in sweet embrace at Los Morrillos Lighthouse in Cabo Rojo shot by a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico

Aww

We reached the lighthouse just in time for that coveted golden hour. The sun sat low, casting a glowing rim around the family. Backlighting like that is a dream—but only when you're prepared. That’s where off-camera flash came in, helping me balance the ambient light with precision and artistry. I always expose for the sky first, ensuring I preserve the vibrancy of Puerto Rico’s sunsets before locking in my camera and flash settings. It’s a must-have approach in any outdoor or destination portrait session.

Ashley had sent me Pinterest inspiration ahead of the shoot, so we recreated her favorite poses first. Once we checked those off the list, I let instinct take over—capturing lovely moments between Ashley and her husband Brandon, portraits of their two kids both individually and together, and, of course, a few sweeping wide-angle shots with the lighthouse and ocean cliffs in full view.

The four of us

The light held out longer than expected, the skies were clear (despite my fear of rain after such a long drive), and the vibe was absolutely perfect. It reminded me that while I mainly focus on weddings, I deeply enjoy photographing families—especially when they’re this joyful, stylish, and up for an adventure.

Cabo Rojo is truly a gem for destination photography in Puerto Rico. From the rugged cliffs to the sun-drenched lighthouse, it offers one of the most stunning backdrops the island has to offer. And for families traveling from the mainland, it's an unforgettable way to turn a vacation into a visual legacy.

Blessed

This Los Morrillos family session reminded me of why I do what I do: to tell stories, to chase light, and to create moments that will live on far beyond the final frame.

Surprise Beach Proposal in Puerto Rico

Aryan proposed to his girlfriend Sonal during a stunning beach setup in Puerto Rico, planned by The Heart Bandits. With candid, documentary-style photography, this surprise engagement captured raw emotion and real love in one unforgettable moment.

Man and woman holding hands shortly before a marriage proposal in Puerto Rico shot by a wedding photographer

The longest walk of his life.

Few moments are as unforgettable as a surprise marriage proposal—especially when it's set against the natural beauty of a Puerto Rican beach. This recent proposal, planned in collaboration with luxury proposal planners The Heart Bandits, was as genuine and romantic as they come.

Aryan reached out to The Heart Bandits with a clear vision: to propose to his girlfriend of two years, Sonal, in a setting that was both intimate and memorable. The two met while in college in Boston, Massachusetts, and while they’re still young, their love story is anything but fleeting. Aryan was sure—he was ready to ask the question.

Ocean Park, Condado

As the photographer brought on to document the proposal, I connected with Aryan ahead of time to ease the nerves that often come with such a high-stakes moment. He felt more at ease knowing he was working with someone experienced in surprise engagement photography and familiar with The Heart Bandits' process.

I gave Aryan the full rundown: the decorator would arrive early to set the scene, and I would be on-site before he and Sonal arrived to capture the intricate details. I also emphasized the importance of non-verbal cues—those subtle signals that let me know the proposal is about to happen, so I can be ready with the right camera settings and shoot in burst mode to capture the exact moment he drops to one knee.

Woman smiling and staring into man's eyes on a beach in Condado, Puerto Rico taken by a wedding photographer

Smitten.

The day of the proposal, we stayed in close contact via WhatsApp. Aryan, the decorator, and I kept each other updated on our whereabouts so everything would flow seamlessly.

Once Aryan and Sonal approached the setup, I emerged discreetly from behind the decorator’s car, camera in hand, documenting every step. Despite my advice to take his time, Aryan wasted no time getting down on one knee—so fast, in fact, that I had to laugh to myself. And instead of proposing on the designated decor area, he shifted just a few steps to the left and proposed right on the sand, adding a spontaneous and sweet twist to the moment.

The setup.

After the big “yes,” I introduced myself to the couple. Both Aryan and Sonal were soft-spoken and deeply present, the kind of couple who simply wanted to savor the moment. Picking up on that, I suggested a candid, documentary-style photo session from a distance—something that resonated with them completely.

Using a telephoto lens, I circled around quietly as they enjoyed their picnic setup. At one point, they stood and strolled toward the shoreline—a photographer’s dream. From that moment on, I kept my distance and let their love lead the way, capturing natural, unposed shots that reflected the authenticity of the moment.

Hopeful.

Whether you're planning a destination proposal in Puerto Rico, hiring a proposal photographer, or looking for real proposal inspiration, Aryan and Sonal’s story is a beautiful reminder that love—when captured honestly—creates the most powerful images.

A Rainy Surprise Proposal at Escambrón Beach That Almost Didn’t Happen

Discover how a surprise proposal at Escambrón Beach nearly didn’t happen due to rain—and how this wedding photographer in Puerto Rico still captured the magic. Perfect for couples planning proposals or destination weddings in Puerto Rico.

Man proposing to woman at Escambrón Beach taken by a Puerto Rico wedding photographer

Amber & David

As a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I’ve had the honor of capturing countless emotional moments—surprise proposals, elopements, destination weddings—you name it. But every once in a while, a session comes along that truly tests your patience, creativity, and ability to think on your feet. This was one of those moments.

The Proposal That Almost Didn’t Happen

Close up of an engagement ring taken at Old San Juan by a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico

The bling

I recently joined forces once again with The Heart Bandits, the world’s premier marriage proposal planners. We’ve collaborated multiple times to help couples plan unforgettable surprise proposals across Puerto Rico, and each one has been uniquely special.

This time, it was David’s turn—a kind-hearted young man from Dallas, Texas who wanted to propose to his girlfriend of over two years, Amber, while vacationing in San Juan. For David, two years was all it took to know Amber was the one. He envisioned a magical proposal on the golden sands of Escambrón Beach, just before sunset.

But nature had other plans.

A Stormy Setback at Escambrón Beach

Couple kissing at Escambrón Beach after a marriage proposal taken by an elopement photographer

A long-awaited kiss

We were scheduled to kick things off at 4:15 p.m., with a romantic beachfront setup near Old San Juan. Like any seasoned Puerto Rico wedding photographer, I always arrive early—especially when dealing with outdoor locations. It’s part of what makes me reliable in a field where timing and weather can make or break the moment.

As soon as I parked my car near the beach, the sky opened up. A torrential downpour drenched the area, threatening to wash away not only the decorations but the proposal itself. The decorator, who had been monitoring the forecast since morning, messaged me with concern. Her fears were becoming a reality.

We quickly started a group text with David, who was understandably stressed. The couple was flying back to Texas the very next morning, which meant rescheduling wasn’t an option. If this proposal didn’t happen that evening, it simply wouldn’t happen in Puerto Rico.

Plan B: A Last-Minute Backup Option

Couple holding hands at Escambrón Beach in Old San Juan taken by a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico

So wholesome

In true proposal-planner fashion, we brainstormed alternatives. Could we move the proposal to his Airbnb? It was small, but it might work. We considered lighting, space for decor, and whether it would still feel special enough for this once-in-a-lifetime moment. It was far from ideal, but better than no proposal at all. Meanwhile, we continued monitoring the weather—and crossing our fingers.

A Drizzly Opportunity

A toast to us

At around 5:15 p.m., nearly an hour after the original start time, the rain slowed to a manageable drizzle. It wasn’t sunny. It wasn’t clear. But it was possible. That was all we needed.

The decorator rushed to finish the setup. I began positioning myself for the big reveal. David led Amber to the spot—rain-kissed and radiant—and got down on one knee. She said yes.

Capturing Love in Any Weather

Couple enjoying themselves with their wedding photographer in Puerto Rico at Escambron Beach in Old San Juan

Offset love

Despite the soggy circumstances, the photos turned out beautifully. There’s something uniquely romantic about a proposal in the rain. The soft light, the glistening surfaces, the intimacy of two people focused solely on each other while the world blurs around them—it all came together to create something magical.

As one of many Puerto Rico wedding photographers who specializes in surprise proposals, I can say with confidence: flexibility is everything. Whether it’s navigating unpredictable weather or finding creative ways to preserve the moment, being adaptable is key to delivering timeless results.

Why Puerto Rico Is Perfect for Surprise Proposals

Couple posing and looking at the engagement ring after a marriage proposal in Puerto Rico

Admiration

Puerto Rico continues to be one of the top destinations for surprise proposals and weddings alike. From historic Old San Juan to lush rainforests and pristine beaches, the island offers an endless variety of stunning backdrops for romantic milestones.

Even when the weather throws you a curveball, the beauty of the island—and the emotion of the moment—shines through. As a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I consider it a privilege to be part of these unforgettable experiences.

Planning a Proposal or Wedding in Puerto Rico?

Whether you're looking for a surprise proposal photographer or you're planning your dream destination wedding, I’d love to help you capture it all. I bring experience, creativity, and a calm presence to every shoot—no matter the forecast. Let’s make magic together.

She didn’t see it coming.

If you’ve ever dreamed of a luxury engagement in Puerto Rico, there’s no place quite as breathtaking as Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve. Tucked along the northern coast of the island, this iconic five-star resort offers not only privacy and elegance but also the perfect setting for unforgettable moments—especially when it comes to surprise marriage proposals.

This is the story of José and Gabriela, a beautiful Venezuelan couple currently living in West Palm Beach, Florida, who decided to take their love to the next level while vacationing in Puerto Rico. And I had the absolute honor of being their surprise engagement photographer.

A Facebook Post That Led to Forever

Couple kissing at Cao in Dorado Beach taken by a marriage proposal photographer in Puerto Rico

Legend has it she’s still processing.

About a month ago, I stumbled across a growing Facebook group dedicated to travel in Puerto Rico. It’s not uncommon to see people asking for recommendations, especially for photographers in Puerto Rico. But by the time I catch these posts, there are usually dozens of comments—Instagram handles, websites, and email addresses all vying for attention.

Normally, I prefer to stand out by privately messaging the person who posted. But this time, the post was anonymous. With no way to message the author directly, I left behind a way to be contacted and hoped for the best.

A few days later, José reached out. He revealed he was the person behind the anonymous post and that he’d been impressed by my work on social media. I was eager to hop on a call, but José mentioned that Gabriela was nearby and he couldn’t risk spoiling the surprise. We agreed I’d reach out later to avoid raising any suspicion.

Setting the Scene at Cao – Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico

What a pair of gorgeous human beings!

Eventually, we got to talk. I learned that both José and Gabriela are Venezuelan and had planned a trip to Puerto Rico for a luxurious getaway. José had made dinner reservations at Cao, the exquisite fine dining restaurant inside Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve—a venue known for its impeccable service, beachfront ambiance, and romantic energy. It was the perfect place to propose.

On the day of the proposal, I arrived extra early. The staff was already aware of what was about to unfold and kindly helped set the stage. I found the ideal spot—at a table with a perfect view of the one José and Gabriela would be seated at. Because Gabriela didn’t know who I was, I didn’t need to hide—just blend in and wait for the signal.

The Secret Signal and the Big Moment

Black and white portrait of a wedding ring taken by a wedding photographer in Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico

Bling bling.

Before they arrived, I texted José a photo of their designated table to help him situate himself according to the sunlight. Timing was key, and Golden Hour was on our side.

Our cue? A simple yet effective gesture: José would fold his napkin into a perfect square and place it on the bottom left corner of the table. That would be my signal to prepare for the proposal.

Sure enough, I saw the napkin. I got up, positioned myself, and watched as José dropped to one knee. Gabriela, so focused on him, didn’t even notice me snapping away. Her face lit up with pure joy. She said “yes” with such passion that the moment practically radiated through my lens.

From Engagement to Golden Hour Beach Portraits

Couple embracing at sunset in Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico taken by an elopement photographer

Glorious day.

After capturing about fifty candid shots of the proposal and celebration, I introduced myself to Gabriela, who was still soaking in the moment. I gave her a moment to gather herself and then guided the newly engaged couple to the nearby beach.

With the sun setting behind them, we took romantic portraits on the sand—the kind of dreamy engagement photos every couple imagines when they think of Puerto Rico. The lighting, the love, the laughter—it was all picture-perfect.

Why Dorado Beach Is the Ultimate Proposal Destination

Grateful.

A Magical Surprise Proposal in Condado, Puerto Rico

Planning a surprise proposal in Puerto Rico? Discover how Jordan’s stunning beach proposal in Condado unfolded, complete with expert photography, romantic decor, and an unforgettable reaction. Learn tips on planning the perfect Puerto Rico proposal!

Man holding hands with woman on a beach in Condado, Puerto Rico taken by a wedding photographer

She didn’t see it coming.

Nothing compares to the excitement of a surprise proposal, especially when it takes place in a breathtaking location like Condado, Puerto Rico. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to capture yet another unforgettable moment with The Heart Bandits, a premier marriage proposal planning company. This time, I worked alongside Jordan, a thoughtful gentleman from Los Angeles, California, as he planned the perfect way to ask the love of his life, Chelsey, to marry him.

The Love Story

Man proposing on a beach in Condado, Puerto Rico shot by an elopement photographer

Knee hurt for too long.

Jordan and Chelsey’s love story began over two years ago at a bar in Los Angeles, where a chance encounter turned into a lifelong connection. From that moment on, Jordan knew Chelsey was special. Now, standing on a pristine beach in Puerto Rico, he was ready to take their love to the next level in an unforgettable way.

The Romantic Setup on Condado Beach

Collage of a beach wedding proposal decoration in Condado, Puerto Rico

He covered all the bases.

Condado Beach is a stunning location for a proposal in Puerto Rico, offering golden sands, turquoise waters, and a magical sunset backdrop. To make the moment even more special, we set the scene with a giant illuminated "MARRY ME" sign, glowing warmly as the sun began to set. A delicate trail of red roses led to a beautifully placed brown carpet, where Jordan would soon get down on one knee.

The Big Moment

Man proposing and kissing the hand of his future wife in Condado, Puerto Rico

Over the moon.

As they walked along the beach, Chelsey had no idea what was about to happen. Jordan, playing it cool, casually strolled past the setup with her, hand in hand. But then, in a beautifully orchestrated moment, he gently guided her toward the proposal display.

The realization hit Chelsey like a wave—her jaw dropped, her eyes filled with emotion, and in that instant, she knew exactly what was happening. Jordan dropped to one knee, and with the ocean breeze surrounding them, he asked her to be his forever. Without hesitation, Chelsey said "YES!" and joy radiated from them both.

The Celebration

Collage of a wedding ring and a couple in sweet embrace during a marriage proposal in Puerto Rico

What a gorgeous couple!

To celebrate, Jordan popped open a bottle of chilled champagne, playfully sprinkling a bit in my direction before taking a victorious swig straight from the bottle. The moment was raw, real, and full of energy. After the excitement settled, the couple clinked glasses and took in the last few golden rays of the sun, basking in their newly engaged bliss.

Capturing the Magic with Photography

Collage of a couple embracing on a beach in Condado, Puerto Rico after a marriage proposal

You remember these moments forever.

For this session, I brought along my brand-new Godox AD200 Pro II flash to ensure I could perfectly balance the fading natural light with artificial lighting. This allowed me to create stunning, dramatic portraits that truly reflected the magic of the moment. I love when couples take their time embracing the moment, giving me the chance to capture those candid, intimate portraits that define my photography style.

Will you marry me?

Planning the perfect marriage proposal can be overwhelming, but with the right team, it becomes a seamless and unforgettable experience. As a Puerto Rico wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing stunning proposals, and recently, I joined forces once again with The Heart Bandits, one of the world's leading marriage proposal companies. They specialize in designing tailor-made proposals by coordinating the right vendors, creating a vision, and executing it flawlessly.

A Love Story That Withstood the Test of Time

Couple holding hands on the beach in front of a 'marry me' sign during a marriage proposal in Puerto Rico

Speaking from the heart.

Victor, a gentleman from Poland, reached out to The Heart Bandits to plan a breathtaking proposal for his longtime girlfriend, Jessica, who is also Polish. Their love story began during the COVID-19 pandemic, making them a true “pandemic couple.” Five years later, their bond remains stronger than ever. Although they now reside in Toronto, they felt Puerto Rico was the perfect place for this milestone moment.

Planning a Surprise Proposal in Condado

Say yes!

Surprise proposals require strategic planning and discretion, especially when traveling for such a grand event. As a seasoned marriage proposal photographer in Puerto Rico, I worked closely with Victor through discreet text exchanges to organize the logistics without raising Jessica’s suspicion.

Our chosen location was Condado, a sought-after beachfront venue known for its breathtaking views and romantic atmosphere. Even on busy days, there are secluded spots where couples can enjoy intimate moments, making it an ideal setting for this unforgettable event.

A Romantic Beachfront Proposal

In awe.

The proposal setup was nothing short of magical—a beautifully arranged picnic table adorned with lavish roses, plush seating, and a bottle of champagne, all perfectly curated for Victor and Jessica’s special moment. As they walked hand in hand toward the setup, Jessica was unaware of the life-changing moment about to unfold.

Following my guidance, Victor took his time speaking from the heart before gracefully getting down on one knee. He revealed a stunning engagement ring, and Jessica’s reaction was priceless—overwhelmed with joy, she jumped in place before giving a heartfelt “YES!”

Capturing the Pure Emotion of the Moment

The ring.

As a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, my role extends beyond just taking pictures—I strive to capture raw emotion and authentic moments. Once Victor and Jessica embraced and soaked in their engagement, I formally introduced myself and congratulated them both.

Rather than opting for a traditional engagement session, the couple chose to relax and enjoy their luxury picnic. Understanding their preference for intimate, candid photography, I kept a respectful distance, allowing them to be present in their moment while I captured genuine smiles, happy tears, and loving glances.

Why Choose Puerto Rico for Your Marriage Proposal?

Kaitlyn & Tanner

When it comes to couples photography in Puerto Rico, few places offer the breathtaking scenery and rich cultural charm of Old San Juan. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing Kaitlyn and Tanner, a young couple visiting from Mississippi, who wanted a session capturing the historic beauty of Old San Juan during golden hour. As a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I always aim to create unforgettable experiences for my couples, and this session was no exception.

Why Old San Juan is a Dream Location for Couples Photography

Woman smiling through plants in Old San Juan taken by a Puerto Rico wedding photographer

Green framing.

Old San Juan is one of the most iconic photography locations in Puerto Rico, known for its cobblestone streets, colorful Spanish colonial architecture, and historic landmarks. Many couples choose this vibrant district for their engagement photos, anniversary sessions, and even elopements. The magic of golden hour photography in Old San Juan enhances the city's beauty, providing warm, glowing light that makes every photo look timeless.

Kaitlyn and Tanner were staying at La Concha Renaissance Hotel, one of the best wedding venues in Puerto Rico. Although they loved their resort, they knew that Old San Juan's eclectic environment and vibrant energy would provide the perfect setting for their session.

Starting the Session at El Convento Hotel

Couple posing within a geometric shape at El Convento Hotel in Old San Juan taken by a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico

Sucker for geometry.

We began our session near Hotel El Convento, widely regarded as one of the most prestigious wedding venues in Puerto Rico. This luxurious boutique hotel, formerly a nun’s convent, features elegant Spanish architecture, lush courtyards, and romantic archways, making it a favorite for destination weddings in Puerto Rico. I hosted a wedding there at the end of 2024, and it remains one of my most memorable experiences as a Puerto Rico wedding photographer.

Exploring the Streets of Old San Juan

Couple posing in front of a garita in Old San Juan shot by a luxury wedding photographer in Puerto Rico

An Old San Juan classic.

From El Convento Hotel, we walked down Caleta de las Monjas, a historic and picturesque street that offers charming backdrops for engagement and couples photography in Puerto Rico. The pastel-colored buildings, ornate balconies, and classic blue cobblestones create an intimate and nostalgic setting.

We then made our way to La Rogativa, a well-known sculpture near the Governor’s Mansion in Old San Juan. Many destination wedding ceremonies take place here due to its stunning views and historical significance. Capturing romantic moments against this breathtaking backdrop made for a truly special part of the session.

Sunset Portraits at El Morro

Couple backlit by flash during an Old San Juan photoshoot taken by an elopement photographer in Puerto Rico

What a way to end it.

No couples session in Old San Juan is complete without visiting El Morro, Puerto Rico’s most famous landmark. The sprawling 16th-century fortress is a favorite among destination wedding photographers because of its dramatic ocean views and open fields that allow for stunning, natural-light portraits. As the sun began to set, I used my Godox AD100 Pro flash with an orange gel, mimicking the last rays of sunlight to create a dreamy, cinematic effect. A Stunning Surprise Marriage Proposal in Condado, Puerto Rico

Experience the magic of a surprise proposal in Puerto Rico with Nate & Ariel’s unforgettable engagement in Condado. As a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I captured this intimate moment in a beautifully decorated Airbnb. Despite space challenges, creativity and expert planning made it picture-perfect. Looking for Puerto Rico wedding photographers to capture your proposal? Let’s make it unforgettable!

Ariel & Nate

There’s something truly magical about a surprise proposal in Puerto Rico, especially when it takes place in the heart of Condado—one of the island’s most vibrant and sought-after locations. Recently, I had the honor of capturing one of the most exciting yet challenging proposals of my career as a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, and it’s a story worth telling.

The Love Story: Nate & Ariel

Couple posing on a balcony in Puerto Rico after a surprise marriage proposal in Puerto Rico

Lovebirds.

Nate and Ariel’s love story began during the pandemic, a time of uncertainty that led to an unbreakable bond. Fast forward to the present, and Nate knew it was time to take their relationship to the next level. He planned an intimate and heartfelt surprise proposal in Puerto Rico, choosing a stunning Airbnb in Condado as the perfect setting to pop the question.

The Challenges of the Venue

The big moment.

While the Airbnb was nothing short of accomodating, it presented one unique challenge—it had a tiny balcony. As any experienced Puerto Rico wedding photographer knows, space constraints can make or break the composition of a perfect shot. Thankfully, Sindy from Home Glamp was in charge of decorating the balcony, transforming it into a dreamy proposal setup complete with a white backdrop, red roses, a tiny red carpet, and a glowing “Will You Marry Me?” neon sign. Though the decorations were breathtaking, they further minimized the already limited space, making my job as a photographer even more intricate.

A Photographer’s Strategy: Adapting to the Space

The Kiss.

Arriving early to assess the setup and logistics, I introduced myself to Nate and let him know that due to the tight space, I’d have to use a wide-angle lens instead of my preferred 85mm portrait lens. Wide angles are excellent for capturing the full scene, but they’re not always the most flattering for close-ups. Nonetheless, we made it work, and I was ready for the big moment.

But there was a catch—since Ariel had no idea what was about to happen, I had to hide in her future mother-in-law’s room to avoid spoiling the surprise. With Ariel out enjoying a relaxing spa massage, I patiently waited for my cue. One of her friends was assigned to knock on the door when it was time for me to sneak out and start capturing the moment.

The Moment of a Lifetime

On cloud nine.

As fate would have it, Nate’s nerves got the best of him, and in his excitement, he accidentally locked the door behind him as he led Ariel onto the balcony. Her mother had to quietly open the door just enough for me to slip my camera through and start documenting the unforgettable moment.

The second Nate dropped to one knee, time stood still. With Condado as the backdrop, Ariel was overwhelmed with emotion as she realized what was happening. A few heartbeats later, she joyfully said “yes,” marking the beginning of their forever.

Capturing Their Love Story

Family.

Once the surprise proposal in Puerto Rico was successfully captured, I took things a step further. I got creative with angles, utilized the balcony’s unique perspective, and even introduced a flash to bring out the romantic atmosphere. To add variety, I suggested a few cozy indoor shots on the Airbnb’s plush sofa, which resulted in some truly heartfelt images of the newly engaged couple.

Why a Surprise Proposal in Puerto Rico is the Perfect Choice

The Perfect Blend of Light & Airy with Dark & Moody

The outside looking in

One of the most impressive aspects of this wedding was the contrast between the outdoor ceremony and the indoor reception. The second-floor location overlooking the beach provided the perfect backdrop for a light and airy ceremony setup. Soft whites, delicate pastels, and flowing fabrics created a romantic and ethereal atmosphere, perfectly complementing the natural beauty of the coastline. Guests were treated to the soothing sounds of ocean waves as they witnessed a truly magical exchange of vows.

As the evening transitioned to the reception, the ambiance took on a completely different yet equally stunning tone. The interior decor embraced a dark and moody aesthetic, featuring deep, rich colors, luxurious floral arrangements, and dramatic lighting. The result was a space that felt warm, inviting, and undeniably majestic—a perfect setting for an unforgettable celebration.

How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Venue in Puerto Rico: A Photographer’s Expert Guide

Discover how to choose the perfect wedding venue in Puerto Rico with this expert guide! From luxury resorts to beachfront ceremonies, learn key factors like weather, guest accessibility, photography backdrops, vendor policies, and hidden costs. As a Puerto Rico wedding photographer, I share insider tips to help you find a venue that matches your dream wedding vision.

Choosing the perfect wedding venue in Puerto Rico is one of the most important decisions couples make when planning their destination wedding. With breathtaking beaches, luxurious resorts, and historic estates, the island offers a vast array of options. But how do you determine which venue is the right fit? As a Puerto Rico wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing weddings at many of the island’s most stunning locations. This guide will help you navigate your options to find the perfect place for your special day.

1. Define Your Wedding Style & Vision

Figure out what you want first.

Puerto Rico offers a diverse selection of wedding venues, so it’s crucial to start with a clear vision of your dream wedding. Ask yourself:

  • Do you picture a romantic beach wedding in Puerto Rico, a lavish luxury resort wedding, or a rustic hacienda-style celebration?

  • Is your style modern and elegant, bohemian and tropical, or classic and traditional?

  • Do you want an intimate micro-wedding or a large celebration with 100+ guests?

Identifying these details will help narrow down your options and ensure you choose a venue that aligns with your vision.

2. Consider the Weather & Best Season for a Puerto Rico Wedding

Think about when you want to be here.

Puerto Rico boasts year-round warmth, but the best time to get married in Puerto Rico is typically from December to April when the weather is drier. However, tropical showers are always a possibility, so consider venues with:

  • Indoor or covered ceremony and reception spaces.

  • Tented outdoor options for unpredictable weather.

  • Climate-controlled ballrooms for ultimate comfort.

3. Guest Comfort & Accessibility

Do you need a small or large venue?

A destination wedding means ensuring your guests can easily access the venue. Consider:

  • Proximity to hotels and airports – Are there nearby accommodations for guests?

  • Transportation logistics – Does the venue offer shuttle services or require rental transportation?

  • Elderly and mobility-friendly access – Are there ramps, elevators, or convenient seating options?

4. Photography Considerations: Finding the Most Picturesque Venues

Your wedding venue should be photogenic.

As a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I always encourage couples to think about how their venue will look in photos. Consider:

  • Natural lighting – Outdoor venues with golden hour backdrops create stunning images.

  • Scenic variety – Some venues offer beach, garden, and architectural backdrops all in one location.

  • Photography restrictions – Some venues have strict rules about flash photography or drone usage.

5. On-Site vs. Off-Site Accommodations

Make sure you think about everything.

For a seamless experience, many couples opt for Puerto Rico wedding venues with accommodations. This ensures a stress-free transition from ceremony to reception, allowing guests to celebrate without travel hassles.

Top choices include:

  • Luxury resorts like Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, or Fairmont El San Juan.

  • Boutique hotels such as O:LV Hotel or Hotel El Convento.

  • Private villas in Vieques or Culebra for an intimate wedding experience.

6. Vendor & Catering Flexibility

Drinks and food is important.

Some Puerto Rico wedding venues require couples to use in-house catering and preferred vendors, while others allow full customization. Ask about:

  • Preferred vendor lists and whether you can bring your own photographer, florist, or planner.

  • Alcohol policies—some venues require in-house bar service, while others allow BYOB.

  • Late-night policies, especially if you plan to extend the celebration.

7. Legal & Permit Requirements for Puerto Rico Weddings

Sign on the dotted line the right way.

If you’re planning a Puerto Rico beach wedding, be aware that permits may be required. Additionally:

  • Certain historic venues have noise restrictions.

  • Some locations may have drone photography limitations.

  • Couples legally marrying in Puerto Rico need to follow the marriage license process, which includes a medical certification and notarized documentation.

8. Budget & Hidden Costs to Watch Out For

Keep everything in front of you.

While some venues offer all-inclusive packages, others charge separate fees for:

  • Event staffing and coordination.

  • Setup and teardown services.

  • Additional hours beyond standard rental time.

  • Security and parking services.

9. Cultural & Personalization Considerations

Find a photographer with experience in cultural weddings

Puerto Rico is rich in culture, and many couples incorporate traditions such as bomba y plena performances or Caribbean-inspired menus. Ask venues about:

  • Space for live entertainment and dance floors.

  • Fireworks or special effects policies.

  • Flexible décor options to personalize the venue to your liking.

Final Thoughts: Finding Your Dream Wedding Venue in Puerto Rico

The Rise of the Anti-Wedding Trend: Why More Couples Are Saying No to Traditional Weddings

Discover the rising anti-wedding trend and why couples are ditching traditions for intimate, unique celebrations. As a Puerto Rico wedding photographer, I explore why elopements, micro-weddings, and adventure ceremonies in Puerto Rico are becoming the top choice. Learn how to create an authentic, stress-free wedding experience in a breathtaking destination.

Anti-weddings are here to stay

In recent years, a growing number of couples have been turning away from traditional wedding expectations in favor of a more personal and meaningful celebration. This movement, often called the "anti-wedding" trend, is changing the way weddings are planned and executed. As a Puerto Rico wedding photographer, I’ve noticed that many couples traveling here for destination weddings are opting for unique, non-traditional experiences rather than the typical grand ballroom celebration. But what exactly is the anti-wedding movement, and why is it gaining popularity?

What is the Anti-Wedding Trend?

Bride holding up a bouquet next to her groom during an anti-wedding in Puerto Rico

Do whatever you want.

An anti-wedding is a deliberate rejection of conventional wedding norms. Instead of a large, highly structured event, couples are embracing smaller, more intimate, and unconventional celebrations that reflect their personalities. Some key elements of anti-weddings include:

  • Ditching traditional wedding attire – Brides may opt for a colorful dress, a jumpsuit, or even thrifted fashion, while grooms might skip the tux altogether.

  • Choosing unique venues – From beachfront elopements to casual backyard gatherings, couples are selecting spaces that hold sentimental value over extravagant wedding halls.

  • Reducing guest lists – Many anti-weddings feature micro-weddings or elopements, prioritizing quality time with close family and friends rather than hosting hundreds of guests.

  • Skipping unnecessary traditions – No bouquet toss, no bridal party, no rehearsed first dance—just an authentic experience tailored to the couple’s preferences.

  • Prioritizing experience over performance – The focus is on the moment rather than creating an Instagram-worthy aesthetic.

For wedding photographers in Puerto Rico, this shift has been especially exciting. The flexibility of anti-weddings allows for creative storytelling, capturing raw emotions, stunning landscapes, and deeply personal moments.

Why is the Anti-Wedding Trend Growing?

Portrait of a couple's shoes during their elopement in Puerto Rico

Think outside-the-box

Pandemic-Induced Changes

COVID-19 forced many couples to rethink their wedding plans, leading to an increase in elopements and micro-weddings. Even after restrictions lifted, many couples realized they preferred the intimacy and affordability of a smaller celebration over the stress of a large wedding.

Rising Wedding Costs

The average cost of a traditional wedding in the U.S. is over $30,000. Many couples are questioning whether it’s worth the expense when they could use that money for travel, a home, or personal goals instead.

Breaking Free from Wedding Industry Expectations

Couples today value authenticity over tradition. The pressure from social media and the wedding industry to create a "perfect" wedding has become exhausting. Instead, many couples are rejecting these pressures and focusing on what truly matters to them.

A Shift in Priorities for Millennials & Gen Z

Younger generations are prioritizing experiences, sustainability, and financial responsibility over extravagant displays. They’re choosing meaningful, memorable weddings over conventional extravagance.

How Puerto Rico is Becoming an Anti-Wedding Destination

Black and white portrait of a couple holding hands and frolicking during their wedding in Puerto Rico

There’s a grey area to weddings.

Puerto Rico is emerging as an ideal location for couples seeking an anti-wedding experience. With breathtaking beaches, lush mountains, and charming historic sites, it offers the perfect backdrop for intimate and unique weddings. As a Puerto Rico wedding photographer, I’ve captured ceremonies on remote beaches, in hidden rainforest waterfalls, and within the colorful streets of Old San Juan—each one designed to reflect the couple’s unique love story rather than adhere to wedding norms.

Why Puerto Rico is the Perfect Anti-Wedding Destination:

  1. Stunning, Natural Beauty – From white-sand beaches to tropical forests, Puerto Rico provides a diverse range of breathtaking settings for intimate ceremonies.

  2. Affordability Compared to Traditional Venues – Many couples find that hosting an elopement or micro-wedding in Puerto Rico is far more cost-effective than a large event in the U.S.

  3. Adventure & Experience-Based Weddings – Couples are incorporating adventurous activities like hiking, surfing, and sailing into their wedding day to make it unforgettable.

  4. Laid-Back Atmosphere – Unlike the rigid structure of traditional weddings, Puerto Rico offers a relaxed vibe perfect for couples seeking an authentic and stress-free experience.

Capturing the Anti-Wedding Spirit as a Wedding Photographer in Puerto Rico

All day I dream about anti-weddings

For wedding photographers in Puerto Rico, anti-weddings offer the chance to document weddings in a more organic and emotional way. Instead of focusing on staged moments, we capture the natural chemistry between couples, the breathtaking scenery, and the raw emotions of the day.

If you’re considering an anti-wedding in Puerto Rico, let’s create something truly unforgettable. Whether you’re eloping on a secluded beach or hosting an intimate dinner with loved ones, I’d love to be your Puerto Rico wedding photographer, capturing the moments that truly matter. Reach out today to start planning your unique wedding experience!
