A Surprise Marriage Proposal at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Puerto Rico
Josiah and Rosie’s surprise proposal at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Puerto Rico was filled with love, laughter, and golden hour magic. From careful planning to emotional moments, discover how their story unfolded—and why Puerto Rico is the perfect place for unforgettable proposals.
The perfect setting: Josiah chose the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Puerto Rico, one of the island’s most beautiful venues, for his surprise proposal to Rosie.
Every proposal has a story worth telling, and Josiah and Rosie’s is one for the books. When Josiah reached out to me via my website about a month before his big day, I knew immediately that his vision was heartfelt. After selecting a virtual meeting through my contact form—a service I offer to make planning stress-free—we broke the ice online.
During our chat, Josiah shared that he met Rosie not on Tinder, as I mistakenly thought at first, but on Twitter. Their connection grew steadily, especially during the pandemic, when they leaned on each other through the uncertainties of Covid and quarantine. After five years together, Josiah was ready to take the next step: a destination proposal in Puerto Rico.
Choosing the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Río Grande
A love five years in the making: Josiah and Rosie met on Twitter and grew stronger together during the pandemic before saying “yes” in Puerto Rico.
Josiah selected the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Río Grande as the venue for the big moment. While the resort is also one of Puerto Rico’s most sought-after wedding venues, I’ve had the honor of capturing numerous proposals there. The tropical setting, lush greenery, and beachside sunset views make it an unforgettable backdrop for engagements.
Preparing for the Big Moment
She said yes: Rosie’s emotional reaction captured the surprise, joy, and love of the moment.
I never approach a proposal without preparation. For Josiah, we did a quick phone rundown where I emphasized two important things: staying calm and not rushing the moment. Too many times, clients have knelt down almost instantly after walking onto the scene, leaving little room to capture the buildup. I reminded Josiah that soaking in the moment—the handholding, the teary eyes, the anticipation—would make the proposal itself even more powerful.
Josiah was all in. Confident, steady, and sure about his decision. Since he also wanted video coverage, I arrived early on proposal day to scout locations. With input from my associate Carola and Hyatt’s on-site guide, Jacob, I discovered the perfect grassy area near Building 9. Framed by two large boulders, it felt private and symbolic—ideal for capturing a once-in-a-lifetime memory.
Behind the Lens: Planning the Shot
The moment is too good to not soak it in at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve
I met Josiah briefly to rig him with a microphone, though his choice of a white linen shirt posed a challenge. Pro tip: a tank top under light fabrics makes it easier to conceal audio gear. Once he was ready, I set up my Canon RF 100mm f/2.8 for video and my go-to Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 for photography, ensuring I could capture intimate moments without intruding.
As Josiah and Rosie strolled the sandy beach, I crouched behind a bush (a detail we laughed about later) and documented the buildup. Josiah spent nearly ten minutes speaking from the heart before finally pulling out the ring and dropping to one knee. Rosie’s reaction was pure joy—tears, hugs, and the sweetest yes.
Golden Hour Portraits
Golden Hour portraits: We headed to the west-facing beach to capture the newly engaged couple against Puerto Rico’s breathtaking sunset.
After the excitement settled, I shifted into portrait mode. The newly engaged couple was still glowing from the proposal, which always makes for authentic, emotional images. Because daylight was fading, we arranged for a trolley to take us to a west-facing beach spot for golden hour portraits.
The logistics weren’t seamless—the trolley was late, and I accidentally loaded into the wrong cart—but we eventually made it to the right place. There, I positioned Josiah and Rosie strategically to block background distractions, ensuring clean, distraction-free photos.
With my Godox AD200 Pro II flash, I balanced the colors of the sky against the couple’s embrace, using both wide and tight shots with my Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8. The tropical sunset did not disappoint.
Finishing at the Iconic Dome
An iconic finish: The proposal session ended at the Hyatt’s signature dome, with dramatic lighting that sealed the night with unforgettable images.
No proposal session at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve is complete without a visit to the dome, a signature photo spot for photographers. While the structure’s many pillars can be tricky for lighting, I came prepared with a second flash—my Godox AD100 Pro paired with a CTO gel. This created warm, cinematic tones against the deep blue evening sky, wrapping up the session with a dramatic flourish.
A Quick Turnaround and Lasting Memories
Within 24 hours, I delivered the full proposal gallery and video to Josiah and Rosie. Their story, from a chance meeting on Twitter to a destination proposal in Puerto Rico, reminded me why I love capturing these milestones. Every proposal is unique, but the joy, the anticipation, and the love are universal.
If you’re planning to propose in Puerto Rico, whether at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve or another stunning location, I’d love to help you capture it. From planning guidance to professional photography and videography, I ensure every detail is documented beautifully.
How to Capture the Perfect Marriage Proposal in Puerto Rico
Planning to propose in Puerto Rico? With over 30 proposals photographed in the past nine months, I specialize in creating luxury, stress-free experiences for couples who want nothing but the best. From the first consultation to the final gallery, every detail is crafted to capture your story with authenticity and elegance.
Sunset beach proposal in Puerto Rico — the perfect golden hour moment.
As a wedding and proposal photographer in Puerto Rico, I’ve had the honor of documenting more than 30 marriage proposals in the past nine months alone. Each proposal is unique, but the goal remains the same: to capture the moment authentically, beautifully, and without stress. Whether it’s a surprise proposal on the beach or an elaborate setup with decorations, my job is to make sure everything is seamless from start to finish.
Step 1: The First Connection
A romantic kneel on the sand with the Caribbean waves as a backdrop.
When I receive an inquiry through my website, the very first step is to set up a virtual meeting. Most of my clients live outside Puerto Rico — in the U.S., South America, or Europe — so this call is crucial. It’s not just about logistics; it’s about breaking the ice, putting a face to the name, and building trust before we dive into the details.
During this call, I ask questions like “Where did you meet?” or “How long have you been dating?” These may sound simple, but they allow me to create a tailor-made experience. More importantly, they help my clients feel valued, appreciated, and heard. Proposals can be nerve-wracking, and it’s my responsibility to ease that tension from the start.
Step 2: Crafting a Customized Proposal Quote
She said yes! Pure joy captured during a surprise proposal in San Juan.
Once I have all the details, I prepare a customized proposal quote that includes everything they need — and nothing they don’t. I deliver this within 48 hours because I know the anticipation is already high.
My most popular offerings include coverage of the proposal itself followed by an engagement session. I also offer video services, as many couples love to share their big news with family and friends on social media. More often than not, clients select hybrid photo and video coverage for the best of both worlds.
Step 3: Securing the Date
Intimate proposal setup with champagne and a private beach view.
Once the couple selects their preferred package, the next step is to secure the date. I quickly send over a personalized packet of literature, which includes the contract and invoice. A 50% retainer serves both as a deposit and as a retainer — once received, the date is locked exclusively for them. This is important because marriage proposals require precise timing, and my commitment to only one couple per day ensures that they receive my full attention.
Securing the date also allows me to begin any advance preparation, whether that’s scouting locations, checking weather conditions, or coordinating with decorators and planners if needed. Affluent couples who want a luxury experience appreciate the peace of mind that comes with knowing their proposal is already prioritized on my calendar. The earlier we finalize, the more we can refine the logistics without feeling rushed.
Step 4: Planning the Logistics
A quiet oceanfront corner, chosen for privacy and breathtaking views.
As the proposal date approaches, we hop on another virtual call or phone meeting to finalize logistics. The location is key, and in Puerto Rico, beaches are often the top choice. Together, we find a spot that’s intimate, scenic, and not overcrowded during golden hour. This ensures privacy and avoids distractions in the background of the photos.
For surprise proposals, I also work with clients to create a subtle “non-verbal cue.” This might be taking off sunglasses, rubbing a beard, or another small gesture to let me know the exact moment they’re about to drop down on one knee.
Step 5: Capturing the Big Moment
Engagement portraits by the water after the big “yes.”
When the moment arrives, I use a long telephoto lens to keep a respectful distance while still capturing the raw emotion of the proposal. Once the question is asked and answered, I step in to introduce myself and meet the other half of the couple. After giving them a few minutes to soak it in, I begin the engagement session.
Step 6: The Engagement Session
Dramatic sunset flash photography for unforgettable proposal portraits.
Every couple has a different vibe — some are fun and adventurous, while others prefer a quieter, more intimate approach. My job is to adapt to their personalities so the session feels natural rather than forced. I often start with candid portraits of them enjoying the aftermath of the proposal: admiring the ring, FaceTiming loved ones, or savoring a champagne toast.
From there, we ease into more creative portraits. Many couples love the opportunity to take advantage of Puerto Rico’s natural beauty, so I often incorporate the ocean, palm trees, or dramatic rock formations. Getting their feet in the sand or water makes the photos timeless and tied to the island’s essence. I also like to experiment with compositions, giving my couples a mix of classic portraits and editorial-inspired imagery.
Finally, I save the most epic shots for sunset. Flash photography during golden hour allows me to create striking, cinematic portraits with vibrant skies and glowing colors. These images often become their favorites — the exclamation point to their story.
Step 7: Editing & Delivery
Luxury proposal photography in Puerto Rico — capturing the beginning of forever.
The very next day, I back up all images and begin the editing process while the magic is still fresh. Backing up immediately ensures their memories are safe — because when it comes to once-in-a-lifetime moments, you can never be too careful. I like to start editing right away because the energy and emotion of the day inspire how I approach each image.
Depending on the package, couples may receive a 24–48 hour turnaround, perfect for announcing their engagement quickly. Having their gallery ready so soon allows them to share the excitement with family and friends almost immediately. Affluent couples especially value this speed, as they often want their announcement to be just as polished as the moment itself.
I carefully curate each gallery so that it tells the complete story — from the anticipation, to the proposal itself, to the celebration afterward. My editing style balances authenticity with artistry, creating timeless images that will look as beautiful 20 years from now as they do today. Delivering the gallery is not the end of the process; it’s the beginning of how my couples relive their proposal over and over again.
Step 8: Beyond the Proposal
Emotional reaction during a luxury marriage proposal in Puerto Rico.
As a token of gratitude, I extend a special offer to couples who hire me again for their wedding: I waive all travel fees. By the time the wedding comes around, they already have a photographer who knows their story, understands their preferences, and has built a natural rapport with them. This makes a huge difference on wedding day.
Final Thoughts

For me, shooting proposals in Puerto Rico is both an art and a science. I’ve refined my approach to make it stress-free, personalized, and unforgettable for every couple. Whether it’s a surprise beach proposal or a styled celebration with décor, my mission is to preserve this milestone in a way that feels authentic and timeless.
If you’re planning to propose in Puerto Rico and want to make sure every detail is captured flawlessly, I’d be honored to help you tell your story.
Why Every Couple Should Have a Wedding Album: The Timeless Value of a Physical Keepsake
Preserve your destination wedding in Puerto Rico with a luxurious album designed by Francis Álvarez, Ambassador for Zoom Print Lab in Barcelona.
Elegant Puerto Rico destination wedding album designed with Zoom Print Lab, preserving memories in timeless luxury.
In today’s digital age, it’s easy to believe that your wedding photos will live forever on your phone, a cloud drive, or social media. But the truth is, files get lost, platforms change, and technology moves on. What never fades in importance is the joy of holding your wedding day in your hands, turning through the pages of a beautifully crafted album, and reliving every moment in a way no screen can match.
As a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico specializing in destination weddings, I know how important it is for couples to not only preserve their memories but to elevate them into something timeless. That’s why I work exclusively with Zoom Print Lab, a luxury print lab based in Barcelona, Spain, known for producing some of the world’s finest wedding albums. I’m proud to be an Ambassador for Zoom, which means my couples get access to the very best in album design, paper quality, and craftsmanship.
Why a Physical Wedding Album Still Matters
Fine art wedding photography meets heirloom-quality albums—crafted in Barcelona, delivered to couples in Puerto Rico.
Your wedding day is one of the most meaningful milestones of your life, and a physical album gives your memories permanence in a way that digital files simply cannot. An album tells your story from beginning to end, transforming your photographs into a cohesive narrative that reflects the emotions, energy, and atmosphere of your day.
Beyond storytelling, albums become legacy pieces—family heirlooms meant to be shared with future generations. Years from now, your children or grandchildren may not know how to access a cloud folder, but they will treasure a book filled with history, love, and beautiful imagery. And unlike digital formats, which risk being corrupted or becoming obsolete, a wedding album is technology-proof. It endures.
Why I Trust Zoom Print Lab
From Puerto Rico’s breathtaking beaches to your living room coffee table, every moment is preserved in a custom wedding album.
Zoom Print Lab has earned my trust because of its uncompromising quality. Their albums are designed with durability and luxury in mind, ensuring they stand the test of time. The selection of materials is unmatched, ranging from fine art papers to exquisite cover options that enhance the overall beauty and longevity of each piece.
Another reason I value Zoom is their dedication to making the design process seamless. They provide their own software, which allows me to carefully create layouts that best showcase your wedding day. Once the design is complete, the order is sent directly to the lab in Barcelona. When the album is finished, it is delivered to me first. This step is crucial because it allows me to personally verify the quality and ensure that everything meets my standards before forwarding it to you. As an Ambassador, I have a direct line of communication with the lab, which means efficiency, expertise, and results you can trust.

Do You Really Need a Second Photographer for Your Destination Wedding in Puerto Rico?
Planning a destination wedding in Puerto Rico? Discover whether hiring a second photographer is worth it. Learn how extra coverage, unique perspectives, and peace of mind can enhance your wedding story while deciding if one or two photographers is the right choice for your celebration.
Candid moments captured during a destination wedding in Puerto Rico with two photographers working in harmony.
Planning a destination wedding in Puerto Rico comes with the promise of palm trees, ocean breezes, and unforgettable memories. But many couples ask the same important question: should they hire a second photographer for their celebration? The answer depends on the size of your event, the complexity of your schedule, and just how comprehensive you want your wedding story to be.
Extended Coverage Without Missing Moments
A second photographer ensures no detail of your Caribbean wedding day is overlooked.
One of the greatest advantages of having a second photographer is the ability to cover multiple events happening at the same time. Destination weddings in Puerto Rico often involve different locations—perhaps getting ready in a hotel suite, a ceremony on the beach, and a reception in a separate venue. While I might be capturing the bride’s preparations, a second photographer can be with the groom, documenting his experience. Beyond logistics, this additional coverage means candid reactions, fleeting expressions, and spontaneous laughter are less likely to slip by unnoticed.
Two Viewpoints Create a Richer Narrative
Bride and groom preparations happening simultaneously, perfectly documented with two photographers.
Another benefit of having a second photographer is perspective. Weddings are filled with moments that unfold simultaneously, and one lens can only be in one place at a time. While I focus on your exchange of vows, a second photographer might capture the emotional reactions of your parents or the panoramic beauty of the backdrop. Together, these viewpoints create a layered narrative that tells a fuller, more immersive story of your destination wedding.
The Value of Backup and Peace of Mind
Multiple angles captured at once bring depth to your Puerto Rico wedding photography story.
Weddings rarely run exactly according to plan. The weather can change, schedules can shift, and even the most reliable equipment occasionally malfunctions. Having a second professional present provides an extra layer of security. It means that if something unexpected occurs, there is still another pair of skilled hands ensuring your memories are preserved with care.
Highlighting What Matters Most to You
Guest reactions and emotional moments preserved thanks to the support of a second shooter.
Every couple has priorities that make their wedding day unique. Perhaps it’s a special dance, a meaningful cultural tradition, or the intricate details of your décor. A second photographer makes it possible to give these elements the attention they deserve. While I concentrate on your most significant moments, my colleague can capture the supporting scenes that bring depth and context to your wedding story.
Understanding the True Cost
Luxury destination weddings in Puerto Rico benefit from comprehensive photography coverage.
Hiring a second photographer is more than simply incrementing the number of photos. It involves an additional professional dedicating their time, talent, and artistry to your celebration. The cost reflects not only their hours on the day itself but also the travel required for a destination wedding in Puerto Rico, the equipment they bring, and the additional editing and coordination required afterward. The final result is a polished, cohesive gallery where the images blend seamlessly in both quality and style.
When a Second Photographer Makes the Most Sense
The beauty of your ceremony backdrop and the intimacy of your vows captured from different perspectives.
There are circumstances when investing in a second shooter provides the most value. Large guest counts, multiple venues, or weddings filled with intricate details and surprises all benefit from the added coverage. Couples who want every reaction, every angle, and every quiet in-between moment documented often find a second photographer to be an essential addition to their team.
When One Photographer May Be Enough
Seamless storytelling of your Puerto Rico wedding made possible with two skilled photographers.
For smaller, more intimate weddings—especially those held in a single location—a single photographer can often capture the day thoroughly. If your timeline is simple and your budget is better spent on other priorities, one professional may be all you need to tell your story beautifully.
Frequently Asked Questions
Destination wedding photography in Puerto Rico elevated by the artistry of a second shooter.
Couples often wonder whether hiring a second photographer means receiving twice as many photos. The answer is not necessarily. Instead of quantity, the real benefit is variety: different angles, perspectives, and storytelling depth. Others question why the cost is higher. This investment covers not only the work of a second professional on the day itself but also the additional editing and coordination afterward. And while it may be tempting to ask a friend or amateur to fill the role, the truth is that professional experience is what ensures consistency, timing, and the instinct to capture fleeting moments that cannot be repeated.
Final Thoughts
Every candid laugh, tear, and celebration moment photographed with dual coverage.
Choosing whether to hire a second photographer for your destination wedding in Puerto Rico ultimately comes down to your vision for the day. A second shooter can provide greater coverage, richer perspectives, and peace of mind, but it is not always necessary. Whether you choose one photographer or two, my mission remains the same: to tell your love story with artistry, emotion, and the timeless beauty it deserves.
An Intimate Wedding at Copamarina Beach Resort & Spa
Discover Joanna & Germán’s intimate wedding at Copamarina Beach Resort & Spa in Puerto Rico. From a heartfelt Google review written before the big day to magical light, rain-kissed portraits, and a joyous reception, this story captures why Copamarina is one of the island’s most versatile wedding venues.
Celebrating love in Puerto Rico at one of the island’s top wedding venues.
A few months ago, Joanna reached out to me after hearing about my work through one of my favorite wedding venues in Puerto Rico: Copamarina Beach Resort & Spa. She had fallen in love with my art and wanted me to capture her wedding day. Like most of my couples, Joanna and Germán were planning a destination wedding in Puerto Rico, so we scheduled a virtual meeting.
It only took thirty minutes for us to realize we were the perfect fit. Joanna wanted a cozy and intimate wedding, and those are my absolute favorite. With smaller weddings, I get to spend more time with the bride and groom, focusing on the emotions and connections that truly matter, rather than rushing through endless formalities. She also requested four hours of coverage, which was ideal given that Copamarina is about a two-hour drive each way.
A Review Before the Wedding
Speeches and toasts for th husband and wife inside Copamarina Beach Resort’s reception hall.
A few days later, I received a Google Business Review notification. I opened it, expecting to relive a past wedding through a client’s words. But as I read, I realized something unusual—Joanna had written a glowing review of me before her wedding even happened! It was heartwarming, humbling, and a little nerve-racking. I knew I had to live up to the incredible expectations she already had.
The Wedding Day Begins
Elegant flat lay details of rings, shoes, and invitations before the destination wedding ceremony.
When the big day arrived, I picked up Bryan, my Swiss Army knife of a team member, who was tasked with the new trend of wedding content creation. Unlike traditional wedding films, content creation offers a more raw and documentary-style perspective that couples love for its authenticity and quick turnaround.
The weather at Copamarina was absolutely perfect. I began with flat lay details—rings, invitations, shoes, and perfume—using a mat and soft window light. Bryan documented candid moments of Joanna getting ready, while I headed over to the groom’s suite to capture Germán finishing his look. Instead of staying confined to the room, I had him step outside for a fresh take on groom portraits.
A Ceremony Bathed in Light
Group photos with family and friends, honoring every guest who traveled for this destination wedding in Puerto Rico.
The ceremony was held on the right side of the resort—a first for me. The light that day was pure magic, softened through the Black Pro Mist filter on my lenses. It was so beautiful that I surprised Joanna with a full ceremony recording from my Canon R50V.
Portraits, Rain, and the Puerto Rican Flag
Rain-kissed portraits with the Puerto Rican flag—a unique touch to this Copamarina wedding day.
After family photos, I whisked Joanna and Germán away for a romantic couple’s session. We walked to the metal pier that stretches out into the ocean, just as the skies began to drizzle. I used flash photography to balance the soft rain with the setting sun. Toward the end, they spotted a Puerto Rican flag and asked to take photos beneath it—a perfect touch to highlight their celebration on the island.
A Reception to Remember

Guests enjoyed cocktails and small bites before heading into the reception hall. The bridal party made their entrances, followed by Joanna and Germán, who danced their way in to their favorite song. Their first dance as husband and wife set the tone for a night filled with joy. After dinner (our quick “five-minute break”), the couple cut their cake, and we gathered every single guest for group photos at their tables—a heartfelt way to thank those who traveled to celebrate with them.
Living Up to the Hype
A romantic beachfront ceremony at Copamarina Beach Resort, one of the top wedding venues in Puerto Rico.
We ended the evening with warm goodbyes, and Joanna thanked me for making her day everything she had envisioned. Later, when I delivered her gallery, I knew I had fulfilled the promise of her early review. Her words came to life in images, and that’s the kind of story I live for.
Copamarina Beach Resort & Spa continues to be one of the most versatile wedding venues in Puerto Rico, offering lush gardens, beachfront ceremonies, a picturesque pier, and luxury amenities for guests. But what truly made this wedding unforgettable was Joanna and Germán’s trust, intimacy, and joy—a reminder of why I love photographing weddings in Puerto Rico.

10 Reasons Why Eloping in Puerto Rico Might Be the Best Decision You’ll Ever Make
Discover the top 10 reasons why eloping in Puerto Rico may be the perfect choice for your love story. From stress-free planning to breathtaking backdrops and intimate moments, this guide reveals why couples are choosing elopements over traditional weddings — and how The Escapade takes your day to the next level.
Eloping in Puerto Rico means leaving the stress behind — no guest lists, no rigid timelines, just pure joy and peace with the one you love.
The wedding industry has trained us to believe that “the bigger, the better” when it comes to celebrating love. Yet more and more couples are discovering that intimacy, adventure, and authenticity often outweigh a lengthy, traditional celebration. If you’ve been contemplating whether an elopement in Puerto Rico could be the right choice, you’re not alone. As a destination wedding photographer who has documented both large-scale weddings and intimate elopements, I’ve witnessed firsthand how transformative, freeing, and unforgettable an elopement can be. If you’re still on the fence, let me share with you ten powerful reasons why choosing an elopement in Puerto Rico may be the best decision you’ll ever make.
1. Elopements Strip Away Stress and Bring You Peace
Your Puerto Rico elopement can be as unique as your love — whether it’s sunrise vows on the beach or wandering the colorful streets of Old San Juan.
Weddings, as beautiful as they are, often come with the heavy weight of planning, scheduling, and people-pleasing. Between guest lists, catering options, seating charts, and family expectations, couples can feel more like event planners than future newlyweds. An elopement frees you from this. Imagine waking up on your wedding day without a rigid timeline dictating your every move. Instead of stressing over whether the flowers arrived on time, you’re hand in hand with your partner, present in the moment, and completely focused on each other. Puerto Rico’s natural beauty — from the rainforest to hidden beaches — becomes your ceremony backdrop, without requiring the headache of managing dozens of vendors. Couples often tell me that the relief they feel when choosing an elopement is almost immediate, as though they’ve reclaimed their wedding day for themselves.
2. You Get to Create a Day That’s Entirely About You
Every glance, every kiss, every laugh — your love story takes center stage during an intimate elopement in Puerto Rico.
Traditional weddings, while lovely, often end up being more about family traditions, guest comfort, or keeping up with social expectations. Elopements flip this dynamic. With no one else to cater to, you and your partner design a day that feels like a reflection of your relationship. Do you want to exchange vows at sunrise on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea? Do you want to spend the afternoon walking through Old San Juan, exploring colorful streets, and stopping for mojitos? Do you want to hike into the rainforest and share a kiss under a waterfall? Eloping means you can dream big, follow your impulses, and weave your favorite things into your wedding day. Every choice is yours — and yours alone.
3. Your Love Story Becomes the Centerpiece
Instead of catering to hundreds, couples who elope in Puerto Rico splurge on experiences that matter: luxury photography, private villas, and once-in-a-lifetime adventures.
At a large wedding, your vows may last ten minutes, and then you spend the next ten hours shaking hands, smiling for group photos, and making sure everyone else is having fun. Elopements shift the focus back to what truly matters: your love story. The intimacy of an elopement creates space for genuine emotions, unfiltered laughter, and quiet moments you’ll remember forever. You’ll remember the way your partner looked at you when the only witnesses were the waves crashing behind you. You’ll remember the sound of the wind in the palm trees as you promised forever. These aren’t fleeting moments lost in the shuffle — they’re the heartbeat of your entire day.
4. Eloping Gives You Freedom to Splurge on What You Actually Care About
From lush rainforests to hidden beaches, Puerto Rico offers breathtaking elopement backdrops without even needing a passport.
Many couples are shocked by how much a traditional wedding costs. Venues, catering, décor, entertainment, and guest accommodations can eat up a budget faster than expected. With an elopement, you can choose to invest in what truly matters to you instead. Maybe that’s hiring a luxury photographer to document every detail, booking a private villa on the coast, or planning a once-in-a-lifetime adventure around the island. By skipping the expenses of a large reception, you gain the freedom to spoil yourselves with experiences and keepsakes that align with your vision. An elopement isn’t about cutting corners — it’s about reallocating your resources to things that genuinely bring you joy.
5. Puerto Rico Offers Breathtaking Backdrops Without Needing a Passport
Elopements give couples something weddings often don’t: time to actually be together, savoring every moment of their Puerto Rico escape.
For couples coming from the U.S., Puerto Rico offers the rare combination of convenience and exotic beauty. No passports are required for American citizens, flights are plentiful, and yet once you arrive, it feels like you’ve stepped into another world. Towering mountains, hidden waterfalls, lush rainforests, cobblestone streets, and sparkling beaches create an endless variety of backdrops for your love story. Instead of being confined to a single venue all day, you can explore multiple locations, weaving adventure into your elopement. The island becomes your playground — and your ceremony can be as adventurous or as laid-back as you’d like.
6. You’ll Actually Have Time Together on Your Wedding Day
Say your vows under a waterfall, sail into the Caribbean, or wander through historic forts — Puerto Rico elopements are made for adventure.
Ask any married couple about their wedding day, and you’ll likely hear the same phrase: “It went by in a blur.” Traditional weddings leave very little time for the couple to be alone together, as the day becomes consumed with timelines, traditions, and guest obligations. Elopements change this. With no distractions, you’ll spend the entire day together, savoring every second. Instead of a rushed dinner between speeches, you’re sharing a picnic on a mountaintop. Instead of a five-minute first look before portraits, you’re strolling hand in hand through cobblestone streets without worrying about being late. An elopement allows your wedding day to feel like a deep breath — one you’ll carry with you for years to come.
7. Elopements Invite Adventure Into Your Story
An elopement in Puerto Rico allows for breathtaking photography at multiple locations, turning your wedding gallery into timeless art.
If you’re the type of couple that thrives on adventure, an elopement is your chance to weave that passion into your wedding. In Puerto Rico, that might mean kayaking into a bioluminescent bay at night, sailing into the horizon, or exploring historic forts with centuries of stories written into their walls. Your wedding day becomes more than a ceremony; it becomes an experience. Adventure creates memories that last far beyond the photographs, and it infuses your marriage with the reminder that love itself is a daring, beautiful journey.
8. Your Photos Become Timeless Works of Art
With only your partner by your side, your Puerto Rico elopement becomes intimate, vulnerable, and beautifully authentic.
As a photographer, I can tell you that elopements allow for storytelling in a way that traditional weddings simply can’t. Without the constraints of a tight schedule, we have the freedom to explore multiple locations, experiment with creative ideas, and truly capture the essence of your relationship. Your gallery becomes more than a record of events — it transforms into a cinematic narrative of your love. These images become your first family heirloom, a visual story you’ll share for generations. Every glance, every laugh, every quiet moment is captured against Puerto Rico’s most stunning backdrops, creating a collection that feels personal, timeless, and entirely your own.
9. You’ll Cherish the Intimacy of Keeping It Small
Choosing an elopement in Puerto Rico means starting your marriage on your own terms — free, intentional, and unforgettable.
There’s something profoundly meaningful about exchanging vows with only your partner — or perhaps a handful of loved ones — by your side. Without a crowd of people watching, you’re free to be vulnerable, to laugh through your vows, to cry without holding back. Elopements create a safe, intimate space where your emotions can unfold naturally. The result is a wedding day that feels authentic and deeply personal, free of performance or expectation. Many couples who choose to elope describe the intimacy as the most precious gift of all.
10. You’ll Start Your Marriage on Your Own Terms
Eloping in Puerto Rico transforms your wedding day into an intimate journey — filled with adventure, romance, and memories you’ll treasure forever.
Perhaps the most powerful reason to elope is this: you’re choosing to begin your marriage in a way that aligns with your values. Not tradition. Not obligation. Not expectation. Just you and your partner, deciding together how to celebrate your love. That choice sets the tone for your future together — a future where your relationship comes first, where your happiness isn’t dictated by what others think, and where your love story is uniquely your own. When you look back years from now, you won’t remember the seating chart or the centerpiece. You’ll remember the way the sand felt between your toes, the way your partner’s voice cracked as they promised forever, and the freedom you felt knowing you had chosen the path that was right for you.
The Escapade: The New Elopements in Puerto Rico
From golden sunsets to hidden corners of Old San Juan, every Puerto Rico elopement tells a story as unique as the couple themselves.
Now, imagine taking all these advantages of eloping and elevating them into an extraordinary experience designed just for you. That’s exactly what I created with The Escapade. It’s not a package. It’s not a template. It’s an invitation to reimagine what your wedding day could be. With The Escapade, you’ll enjoy an entire day of photography where no moment goes unnoticed, explore Puerto Rico’s most breathtaking locations with me as your guide and chaperone, and take home a luxury heirloom album that immortalizes your story. The Escapade is for couples who want more than just an elopement — they want a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
The only question is: Are you ready to take The Escapade?
The Top Luxury Wedding Photography Trends for 2025
Discover the latest luxury wedding photography trends for 2025. From cinematic storytelling to fine-art albums, explore how affluent couples in Puerto Rico, Portugal, Spain, and Italy are elevating their destination weddings with high-end photography.
Where art meets luxury.
Redefining Luxury Wedding Photography
In 2025, luxury wedding photography has evolved into something far beyond traditional posed portraits. Affluent couples marrying in destinations like Puerto Rico, Portugal, Spain, and Italy are demanding artistry, storytelling, and bespoke experiences that reflect their love and lifestyle. They want their wedding albums to look less like a standard collection of photos and more like a fashion editorial or a cinematic masterpiece. This shift is setting new standards for what it means to invest in high-end wedding photography.
Cinematic Storytelling Meets Editorial Style
Fine art photography will never go out of style.
One of the most prominent trends among wealthy couples is cinematic storytelling. With the help of drone photography and creative motion techniques, photographers are capturing weddings like full-length films. Imagine sweeping aerial shots of a Tuscan vineyard, an intimate sunset portrait on a Spanish cliffside, or a grand Puerto Rican estate viewed from above. These images go beyond documenting events—they create a visual narrative worthy of the silver screen.
Alongside cinema-inspired imagery, editorial-style photography is gaining momentum. Couples increasingly want their portraits to look like the pages of Vogue. This means bold lighting, artful poses, and fashion-forward compositions that highlight couture gowns, luxury venues, and curated details. The combination of Hollywood storytelling and high-fashion aesthetics is redefining what it means to have a luxury wedding album.
Authentic Storytelling With an Artistic Edge
Shirley and her veil.
Despite the demand for high production value, authenticity remains at the heart of luxury wedding photography. Couples are drawn to documentary-style coverage that captures genuine emotion—tears, laughter, and spontaneous joy—without staged poses. This approach tells the full story of a wedding day as it truly unfolds.
To elevate these candid moments, photographers are incorporating artistic techniques such as double exposures, motion blur, and film grain. Film photography in particular has made a major comeback, offering tactile, nostalgic images that pair beautifully with modern digital collections. Whether it’s a destination wedding in Puerto Rico or a glamorous event in Florence, film provides timeless beauty that resonates with today’s luxury clientele.
Lighting, Mood, and Dramatic Perspectives
Flare for the dramatic.
Lighting and atmosphere are essential to creating unforgettable imagery. Golden hour and blue hour are now carefully planned into wedding timelines to ensure couples are photographed in the most flattering natural light. Drone photography provides breathtaking aerial perspectives, while on-camera flash transforms evening celebrations into high-energy editorial-style images.
Black-and-white photography also remains timeless, stripping away distractions and focusing on pure emotion. For couples marrying in historic Italian villas, sunlit Spanish haciendas, or Puerto Rican beachfront resorts, these artistic lighting choices enhance the grandeur of their chosen venues.
Technology Elevating the Luxury Experience
Blurred love.
Affluent couples often lead the way in embracing innovative technologies. In 2025, many luxury wedding photographers are offering augmented reality albums where images can come alive as video clips through a mobile app. Virtual reality previews of venues, AI-assisted editing for faster turnaround, and dedicated wedding content creators curating social-media-ready reels are also in high demand.
These innovations provide instant gratification for couples who want to share their celebrations online while still receiving an heirloom-quality gallery. For destination weddings in Puerto Rico, Portugal, Spain, or Italy, this blend of tech and tradition ensures every moment is captured and experienced at the highest level.
Multi-Day Destination Wedding Coverage
Welcome to paradise.
Luxury weddings are no longer limited to a single day. Couples marrying abroad are hosting multi-day celebrations, from welcome dinners to farewell brunches. Photographers are expected to capture each event with the same level of artistry, often requiring second and third shooters to ensure nothing is missed.
These multi-day experiences are particularly popular in Puerto Rico’s beachfront resorts, Portugal’s vineyards, Spain’s coastal estates, and Italy’s historic villas. By documenting the entire journey, photographers create a complete visual narrative that reflects both the extravagance and intimacy of a destination wedding.
Heirloom Keepsakes and Fine-Art Presentation

The final trend shaping luxury wedding photography lies in how memories are preserved. Digital-only galleries are no longer enough for affluent clients. Instead, they are investing in fine-art albums, large-scale prints, and custom heirlooms designed to last for generations.
Luxury couples are choosing hand-bound albums, archival wall art, and even anniversary print subscriptions to keep their love story alive long after the wedding day. For a couple marrying in San Juan or Tuscany, these keepsakes transform their celebration into a tangible legacy.
The Future of Luxury Wedding Photography
Timeless.
For couples planning a wedding in Puerto Rico, Portugal, Spain, or Italy, one truth stands out: wedding photography in 2025 is about more than documenting an event. It is about curating an immersive, cinematic, and deeply personal experience. Luxury is no longer defined by excess, but by artistry, intentionality, and storytelling that transcends time.
Whether captured under Caribbean sunsets or Tuscan skies, luxury wedding photography has become the ultimate expression of love and lifestyle for today’s most discerning couples.
Jacob & Gwen’s Unforgettable Puerto Rico Marriage Proposal at Punta Borinquen
Jacob planned a magical marriage proposal in Puerto Rico for his longtime girlfriend, Gwen, at Punta Borinquen in Aguadilla. With golden hour light, ocean views, and a touch of adventure, their engagement was nothing short of unforgettable. Discover why Puerto Rico is the perfect place to propose.
Gwen and Jacob at Punta Borinquen Beach in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico
A young man named Jacob reached out to me via my website about a month ago, letting me know he wanted to propose to his sweetheart, Gwen—the girlfriend he met a very long time ago.
Immediately, as per usual, I went ahead and invited him to a FaceTime call not just to break the ice, but to get a feel for where his head was at, catch his vibe, and get to know his story. It’s customary for me as a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico to get the prospective client face-to-face (mostly through virtual meetings because most of my clients are destination clients) and learn the vision they have for their special day.
It was all a blur.
Jacob proceeded to tell me he wanted to propose with a west coast sunset, namely at a beach usually reserved for surfing and aptly called Surfer’s Beach. It’s one that I’m actually familiar with from my days visiting my father as a child, since he lives in the city where the beach is located—Aguadilla.
The funny thing about all of this is that I was there a week prior to Jacob’s proposal day scouting locations for yet another proposal. It turns out that another client wanted to propose in Rincón, a city not too far away from Aguadilla. But the path of Hurricane Erin just north of Puerto Rico the day before rendered Rincón incredibly ugly. The sargassum was everywhere, the waves were monumental, and the water was muddy.
Jacob at Punta Borinquen beach in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico
That’s when I went to Aguadilla because I had remembered an isolated, private, and spacious beach called Punta Borinquen that I also frequented as a kid. Not only did I end up visiting, but I took a video for both my client that day (of which he approved) as well as Jacob’s proposal a week later. I sent it to Jacob, and shortly thereafter he agreed that it was much more of an ideal setting for his marriage proposal in Puerto Rico.
As a fun side note, Jacob texted me a few days prior with what he called a “non-proposal” related text. He simply wanted to know how he could get back to the city after taking an Uber all the way to the west coast—something that can be quite pricey. Out of the goodness of my heart, I told him he could simply ride back with me since I wasn’t planning on staying overnight in Aguadilla. He couldn’t believe my gesture and was incredibly grateful to have a courteous human being for a proposal photographer in Puerto Rico.
Gwen in awe at Punta Borinquen Beach in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico
I got there extremely early and parked right in front of the Aguadilla airport to text Jacob some instructions. Because I now know there is little to no cellphone service at Punta Borinquen Beach, I needed to make sure we’d be on the same page prior to losing signal. Once I got the “thumbs up” reaction on my iPhone, I proceeded to cut through the golf course that you inevitably have to take to reach this beach in particular.
As I parked my car and made my way to the sand, I realized that the farthest section was completely wide open, right in front of the tall cliff with the green foliage. I found a stick in the sand, drew an arrow to where I wanted him to propose, and then placed a coconut next to it so that he could easily find his spot for the proposal in Puerto Rico.
Never let a good silhouette pass me by.
As the clock neared 6:00 p.m., I made small talk with a photographer from Utah who happened to be there and noticed I had my camera equipment. As part of the pleasantries we exchanged, I kindly asked her to peek over my shoulder to see if Jacob had mustered the courage to propose to Gwen at the location I had designated. When she gave me the green light, we were off to the races.
I used my trusty Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L USM lens to capture that magical moment—a lens I once considered selling but will never let go of because of the vast number of proposals in Puerto Rico I’ve been privileged to photograph. After the dust settled, I quickly introduced myself in person for the first time (something that’s the norm for me as a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico) and exchanged some quick banter with the newly engaged couple.
Ring shots are so dreamy!
Shortly thereafter, I switched to my Canon RF 50mm f/1.2—my favorite lens of all time and one I use often to capture those raw, intimate moments with my couples during engagement sessions in Puerto Rico. It renders so beautifully and allows me to convey the affection and love couples share right after they say “yes” to one another.
To put the finishing touches on yet another epic Puerto Rico marriage proposal, I pulled out my favorite flash, the Godox AD200 Pro Mark II, and worked with the extremely gorgeous sunset we were blessed with during Golden Hour.
Puppy love.
I’m honestly floored by how ethereal this session turned out, and I highly encourage you to contact me if you’d like to have your marriage proposal in Puerto Rico photographed. This island offers breathtaking backdrops, heartfelt moments, and unforgettable experiences—something Jacob and Gwen now know firsthand.
Epic finish.
A Puerto Rico Proposal Story: How We Turned Hurricane Erin’s Aftermath Into a Dream Engagement
Discover how a hurricane couldn’t stop Cesar’s romantic Puerto Rico proposal. As a dedicated proposal photographer in Puerto Rico, I scouted hidden beaches, planned logistics, and captured stunning images. Learn why hiring the right Puerto Rico proposal planner ensures your engagement is unforgettable.
The proposal that almost didn’t happen.
When Cesar first reached out to me through my website two months ago, he was searching for a proposal photographer in Puerto Rico who could capture one of the most important moments of his life: asking his longtime girlfriend, Sondrea, to marry him. Like I do with all my clients, I suggested a quick FaceTime call so we could break the ice, talk through ideas, and align on his vision for the big day.
Cesar knew he wanted a Puerto Rico proposal on the west coast, preferably at a beach in Rincón, one of the island’s most romantic and picturesque destinations. Together, we narrowed it down to Domes Beach, a favorite among surfers, but also perfect for proposals since most people stay in the water, leaving the sandy shore quiet and intimate.
Hurricane Erin Changes Everything
Legend has it Sondrea is still processing what happened.
The day before Cesar’s planned proposal, Hurricane Erin passed just north of Puerto Rico. The storm left its mark across Rincón: sargassum lined the coast, the waves were rough, and the once turquoise waters had turned an unappealing brown. I scouted Domes Beach early that morning and quickly realized it wasn’t suitable for a proposal. I also checked Los Almendros Beach, another possible option, but conditions there were even worse.
At that moment, I faced a decision: postpone the proposal or go above and beyond to find a new spot—on the very same day. For me, client service always comes first. Postponement wasn’t an option.
Scouting for the Perfect Proposal Location
Drama everywhere.
I drove an hour to Aguadilla to check out Surfer’s Beach, a location another client had mentioned. Unfortunately, it too was covered in debris. Time was running out, and I needed to find a beautiful and private location fast.
That’s when I remembered Punta Borinquen Beach, a hidden gem my father used to take me to when I was a child. Tucked away behind a golf course and accessible only by crossing a small wooden bridge, the beach revealed itself as a breathtaking, secluded paradise. Clean sand, blue water, and an untouched cliffside backdrop—it was everything a Puerto Rico proposal planner dreams of.
I quickly filmed a short video and sent it to Cesar. Within seconds, he agreed to drive the extra hour. Just like me, he fell in love with the spot instantly.
The Proposal Setup
You can’t make this up.
Cesar had arranged for a violinist and his cousin to help with decorations. While the musician was ready and waiting, his cousin accidentally set up on the opposite side of the bridge from where I had recommended. With daylight fading fast, we scrambled to move everything to the better location. By the time we finished, it was already 6:40 p.m.—forty minutes later than planned.
That left us with only about twenty minutes of light for photos. But as a proposal photographer in Puerto Rico, I wasn’t going to let logistics ruin the moment. I worked quickly and captured every angle of the proposal, including romantic portraits of the couple afterward.
The Big Moment
Sweet embrace.
Despite the last-minute challenges, the proposal was magical. With live violin music filling the air, Cesar dropped to one knee as the ocean sparkled in the background. Sondrea’s reaction was pure joy, and she later told us how grateful she was that we had gone the extra mile to make the moment so special.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, I pulled out my flash to capture creative twilight shots, with a soft blue hue behind them. The images turned out ethereal, and Cesar and Sondrea now have a gallery filled with once-in-a-lifetime memories.
Why Hiring a Proposal Photographer in Puerto Rico Matters
All smiles that day.
Proposals don’t always go exactly as planned. Weather, logistics, and last-minute changes can throw curveballs, but having an experienced Puerto Rico proposal photographer makes all the difference. Beyond just taking pictures, my role often feels like that of a Puerto Rico proposal planner—scouting locations, troubleshooting problems, and ensuring everything aligns perfectly for that once-in-a-lifetime moment.
If you’re considering a Puerto Rico proposal, whether in Rincón, Aguadilla, San Juan, or elsewhere on the island, choosing the right photographer is essential. Not only will you walk away with beautiful images, but you’ll also have someone in your corner making sure the entire experience feels effortless and unforgettable.
Final Thoughts
It hasn’t hit her yet.
Cesar and Sondrea’s engagement is one I’ll never forget. From hurricanes to last-minute location switches, it was the most challenging proposal I’ve photographed—but also one of the most rewarding. The pictures reflect not just their love story, but the resilience and dedication that went into making it happen.
If you’re ready to plan your own Puerto Rico proposal photography experience, I’d be honored to capture it for you.
A Surprise Marriage Proposal in Culebra, Puerto Rico
A surprise proposal in Culebra, Puerto Rico turns into a magical, adventure-filled day for a Texas couple. Read how this beach engagement—complete with a secret cue, sargassum scouting, and a coffee shop coincidence—unfolded through the lens of a destination proposal photographer.
Flamenco Beach, Puerto Rico
About two months ago, I received a message through my website from Jared, a thoughtful guy from Texas who had something big in the works. He and his longtime girlfriend, Ashley, were planning a trip to Puerto Rico—and he wanted to turn their vacation into something unforgettable: a surprise marriage proposal.
As a wedding and proposal photographer based here on the island, moments like these are a highlight of my work. But when the stakes rise to the level of flying to a separate island municipality to pull it off? That’s a double win for me. Documenting destination proposals is a privilege I never take lightly.
Choosing Culebra: Off the Beaten Path
The big moment at Flamenco Beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico
Jared was drawn to Culebra, a small, picturesque island just off the east coast of Puerto Rico known for its beaches and laid-back vibe. Accessible only by plane or ferry, it’s the kind of place where time slows down and nature steals the show. It’s also one of my favorite proposal spots when couples are looking for something unique and secluded.
We jumped on a few planning calls, going over everything from timing and wardrobe to signal issues and cues. Part of my service to Jared included arriving on the island early to scout potential proposal spots and send him options. I wanted everything to be seamless.
Scouting the Best Beaches (And Dealing with Sargassum)
Culebra, Puerto Rico
A few days before their arrival, I hopped on a small plane and began exploring Culebra by golf cart—yes, golf cart. It’s the local way of getting around if you’re not actually from there. The mission? To find a proposal location worthy of their story.
But there was one curveball: sargassum.
This seaweed-like algae had taken over almost every major beach. Flamenco Beach, often ranked as one of the top five beaches in the world, wasn’t spared. Neither were Zoni, Soldado, or Melones. Each one had its own beauty, but either the seaweed, rocky shorelines, or harsh lighting made them less than ideal.
Eventually, after several hours of exploring, Jared and I found a tucked-away spot on the far right end of Flamenco Beach. It was private, beautifully lit in the late afternoon, and the water was clear of sargassum. I flagged it as the winner and began preparing the logistics for our Golden Hour shoot.
An Unexpected Coffee Shop Encounter
She said yes at Flamenco Beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico
On the day of the proposal, I had a few hours to kill before our 6 p.m. meet-up. I stopped by a cozy café called Culebra Coffee, just walking distance from the ferry station. I ordered an avocado toast with hummus and started chatting with one of the employees, Anita.
As we made small talk, I mentioned I was a photographer in town to shoot a surprise proposal later that day. And then—in walks Jared and Ashley.
I gave Anita a quick wide-eyed look that screamed, “Don’t say anything!” She caught on immediately. Don and Randy, the other shop employees, were doing their best not to laugh. And there I was, sitting next to Ashley, trying to keep a straight face while she placed her order. It was a surreal moment. Jared and I texted each other from across the room, cracking up at how small the island really is.
Crossing Paths Again (and Again)
Epic sunsets at Flamenco Beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico
After brunch, I resumed scouting. I gave Melones another look, but its rocky terrain made it a no-go for dropping to one knee. Zoni had poor lighting. Soldado? More sargassum. Flamenco still stood as the best option.
Meanwhile, Jared and Ashley were exploring the island on their own golf cart—and we kept accidentally running into each other. We passed several times on the road. Ashley must’ve thought I was some kind of creeper. Little did she know I was actually her photographer, waiting for the big moment.
Showtime at Flamenco Beach
Majestic photoshoot at Flamenco Beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico
We locked in our plan: Golden Hour at Flamenco.
I got there early and approached a few nearby beachgoers—a Spanish family and an Italian couple—asking kindly if they could move slightly out of the frame. They were incredibly gracious, and we ended up chatting. (I’m currently learning Italian, so it was a fun exchange.) I snapped a photo of the chosen proposal spot and sent it to Jared. The only problem? My phone had no signal.
I had to sprint all the way back to the main entrance of Flamenco Beach just to get a single bar of reception. After a three-minute struggle, the photo finally went through. Jared now knew exactly where to go. I raced back to my hiding spot in the foliage, positioned my camera, and waited.
The Proposal
The light was amazing at Flamenco Beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico
Moments later, I saw them approaching. I had a small window through the leaves where I could shoot discreetly. The light was perfect—the sun low, golden, and soft.
At first, Jared stood in the wrong area, blocking the view. I ducked down and turned around so Ashley wouldn’t see me, then repositioned. The Italian couple nearby acted like secret agents, letting me know in Italian when she wasn’t looking so I could pop back up and keep shooting.
Finally, Jared walked to the exact spot. He stood with Ashley for a moment, speaking from the heart. Then came our non-verbal cue: he turned his baseball cap backward—our secret signal that the proposal was about to happen.
The only challenge? He was so in the moment that he unknowingly had his back turned to me. I had to adjust quickly, scooting left and right to catch every angle as he dropped to one knee. She said yes.
After the Yes
Black and white hits different at Culebra, Puerto Rico
Once the excitement settled, I introduced myself. Ashley’s eyes widened in recognition. “Wait—you’re the guy from the coffee shop!” she laughed. And the golf cart sightings? Everything suddenly made sense.
I wasn’t a creeper. I was her Puerto Rico proposal photographer, doing his best to stay incognito.
As the sun began to set behind the island’s hills, I pulled out my Godox V100 flash and added a CTO gel to warm the scene. I lit them softly from below and we got creative with sunset portraits by the water. The sky was absolutely stunning—one of the most vibrant I’ve ever seen.
The Wrap-Up
Sunset at Flamenco Beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico
This proposal had everything: surprises, serendipity, scenic challenges, and just the right amount of chaos. And in the end, it couldn’t have unfolded more beautifully.
Jared and Ashley, thank you for trusting me with such an intimate moment. It was an honor to document the start of this new chapter in Culebra. I wish you a lifetime of love, adventure, and spontaneous coffee shop run-ins.
Romantic Wedding at Fundación Luis Muñoz Marín | Puerto Rico Wedding Photographer Experience
A romantic wedding at Fundación Luis Muñoz Marín beautifully captured by one of the top wedding photographers in Puerto Rico. Discover lush greenery, heartfelt moments, and timeless photography for couples seeking elegant Puerto Rico wedding venues.
Deliann looking splendid
When Deliann first reached out to me, she told me she was marrying her longtime boyfriend, Luis Yamil. With a sweet mix of excitement and realism, she mentioned he was a bit older—but love, as we all know, doesn't follow a script. Age is just a number. What truly matters is connection, and theirs was the kind that wedding photographers in Puerto Rico dream of capturing.
Their wedding venue of choice? The legendary Fundación Luis Muñoz Marín, a place I had long admired but never had the opportunity to photograph—until now. It’s one of those Puerto Rico wedding venues that effortlessly blends nature, history, and intimacy into a picturesque setting. Nestled in lush greenery and filled with vibrant Caribbean light, it provided the perfect canvas for their unforgettable day.
Getting Ready: A Creative Start at Home
Getting ready
The day began at Deliann and Luis Yamil’s home, where I focused on capturing the personal, behind-the-scenes moments that make each wedding story unique. Finding the perfect spot to hang her dress was a challenge—especially with a pool nearby that threatened a splashy disaster—but I eventually found a lovely outdoor wall that set the scene just right.
Deliann’s bridal preparations were full of quiet beauty. I experimented with creative compositions, photographing her through her bridal shoes and using a nearby mirror for dreamy reflections. Her sister, who doubled as the hair and makeup artist, provided a warm and familiar environment, and her son joined in for a touching embrace that made for one of my favorite portraits of the day.
Before wrapping up at her home, I discovered a striking wooden slat wall with vertical lighting strips—ideal for creating moody, editorial-style portraits that have become a signature part of my brand as a luxury wedding photographer in Puerto Rico.
Groom Portraits and the Magic of Fundación Luis Muñoz Marín
The Boys
Next stop: the venue itself. I met up with Luis Yamil and his sons, all dressed in coordinated tan suits, for their portrait session amidst the lush surroundings. With my assistant Bryan handling the lighting—utilizing the MagnetMod Starter Flash Kit on my Godox AD200 Pro II—we crafted bold, cinematic shots that balanced moody shadows with the vibrant greenery that defines this iconic venue.
For couples researching Puerto Rico wedding photography, let me just say: Fundación Luis Muñoz Marín lives up to the hype. The ceremony space is shaded by towering trees that filter sunlight into a soft, romantic glow. The setting felt like a secret garden tucked into the heart of San Juan.
The Ceremony: Emotion and Elegance
Pinnacle moments
As the ceremony began around 5 p.m., I was ready with my dual camera harness and second shooter Carola at my side. A string quartet provided a magical soundtrack as guests took their seats. Luis Yamil stood at the altar, visibly emotional, and the moment he saw Deliann being walked down the aisle by her son was deeply moving. The embrace they shared at the altar was the kind of real, unscripted moment that makes documenting weddings such a profound experience.
We captured the ceremony from all angles—wide, medium, and intimate close-ups—ensuring every tear, smile, and vow was preserved. The couple's joyful exit down the aisle, surrounded by the warmth of family and friends, made for the perfect transition into the next chapter of the day.
Reception Highlights: A Warm, Elegant Celebration
So classy and elegant
Carola had already made her way to the reception hall to photograph the décor before guests arrived. The design was breathtaking: golden oranges, sunset yellows, and hints of rich purple throughout the floral arrangements and table settings. Towers of cake stood like edible sculptures, and the ambient lighting wrapped the entire scene in romance.
I asked Deliann and Luis Yamil to close their eyes as I dialed in my camera settings. When they opened them, their reactions to the stunning setup were priceless. As a Puerto Rico wedding photographer, moments like these—when couples see all the planning come to life—are as important to me as the first look or the vows.
The rest of the night was an energetic celebration. From their first dance to the bouquet toss and garter ritual, the reception was filled with laughter and connection. The DJ had the entire crowd on the dance floor—something I hadn’t seen in a while. The joy was contagious.
A Wedding to Remember
Swoon.
From our first conversation to the final dance, Deliann and Luis Yamil made me feel like more than just a vendor—they treated me like a friend. They reminded me why I chose this path: to tell honest, heartfelt stories of love through my lens.
If you’re a couple dreaming of a destination wedding filled with character, nature, and elegance, consider the stunning wedding venues in Puerto Rico like Fundación Luis Muñoz Marín. And if you’re searching for someone to document your story with creativity and care, I’d be honored to be your guide.
A Surprise Marriage Proposal at the St. Regis Bahía Beach Resort, Puerto Rico
A surprise marriage proposal at the St. Regis Bahía Beach Resort in Puerto Rico, captured during golden hour with cinematic detail, candid moments, and stunning flash portraits. Discover Jean and Steffane’s unforgettable love story through the lens of a destination proposal photographer.
The pinnacle moment
When Jean first reached out to me via Facebook, I didn’t realize I was about to document one of the most romantic proposals I’ve ever witnessed. He had stumbled across my public profile and messaged me with a heartfelt mission: he wanted to propose to his girlfriend, Steffane, while visiting Puerto Rico.
Their love story was special. Jean and Steffane had first met in high school, where they shared a scholarly, friendly bond—but life had other plans. Years passed and it wasn’t until the height of the COVID-19 pandemic that fate brought them back together. Amid a global crisis, their connection rekindled and evolved into a deep, lasting love.
A happiness collage
Jean told me he would be attending a wedding on July 5th at the stunning Hacienda Siesta Alegre in Puerto Rico. Inspired by the romance of the event, he thought it would be perfect to propose the following day, capitalizing on the lingering emotions from the wedding to create their own beginning. His vision? A surprise proposal at the luxurious St. Regis Bahía Beach Resort in Río Grande.
He texted me a photo of a lush garden behind one of the resort’s buildings—a secluded, picturesque spot where he and Steffane would later enjoy dinner as an engaged couple. It was the ideal backdrop.
Poppin’ bottles.
As always, I arrived early—annoyingly punctual, in fact—to scout the location and gauge how the light would behave during golden hour. This magical time of day, when the sky bathes everything in soft, warm tones, is crucial for capturing that timeless, cinematic feel.
In a strategic move to elevate the quality of the proposal footage, I decided to enhance the audio coverage using a DJI Mic cleverly hidden under Jean’s shirt. I asked him to arrive ahead of time so I could rig the microphone without raising any suspicion. He then returned to the room to regroup and rejoined Steffane moments before the big surprise.
Top to bottom, all was covered.
I hid in plain sight on the left-hand side of the ocean-facing steps, camera in hand—my trusty Canon R6 Mark II, paired with the versatile RF 70-200mm lens, which lets me stay out of sight while still capturing every detail. I also had a GoPro Hero 13 Black strapped to my shoulder to provide Jean with behind-the-scenes footage he had requested.
At just the right moment, I watched Jean drop to one knee, and I began shooting. With the telephoto lens, I was able to capture both wide environmental shots and those intimate close-ups that tell the full story. Thanks to the hidden mic, I recorded the entire exchange in crystal-clear audio—making the final video all the more emotional and powerful.
So classy these two!
After Steffane said yes, I introduced myself, admired the ring, and congratulated them both. Though I had previously taught tennis at the St. Regis, this was my first time shooting a destination proposal at the resort, and it hit differently. It was my 25th proposal in Puerto Rico in just three months, but each one is unique, and this one felt especially meaningful.
With golden hour fading, we transitioned to the beach for their engagement portrait session. The beach offered plenty of space to play with, and this is where I shine—capturing candid, romantic moments that feel unscripted and deeply personal. These quiet in-between shots—the whispers, the embraces, the shared laughter—are some of my favorites, especially in timeless black and white.
Golden Hour hits different.
As the sky transitioned into dusk, I brought out my Godox AD200 Pro Mark II and AD100 Pro flashes to simulate sunset lighting. This allowed me to maintain that warm, glowy atmosphere even as natural light dwindled, and close the session with vibrant, dynamic portraits.
Jean and Steffane were a dream to work with—classy, fun, and fully immersed in their moment. I feel honored to have played a small part in their love story and to have documented such a significant milestone.

My Name is Francis Alvarez — and Italy is My Next Creative Destination
I’m an experienced destination wedding photographer from Puerto Rico, and like so many romantics around the world, I’ve been captivated by Italy’s beauty for years. The rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and timeless architecture make it one of the most sought-after wedding destinations globally.
While I’ve yet to photograph a wedding in Italy — that is precisely why your wedding could be truly special. My first Italian wedding will not be “just another assignment.” It will be the culmination of years of dreaming, studying, and preparing for this moment.
Your wedding could be the love story that brings my lens to Italy for the first time, and I promise to pour every ounce of passion, energy, and creativity into making your photos unforgettable.
Why Fresh Eyes Matter for Your Italian Wedding
Bliss
Many couples choose a wedding photographer who has shot dozens of weddings in Italy, and that certainly has its benefits. But there’s also something uniquely powerful about seeing a place — especially a place as beautiful as Lake Como, Tuscany, Florence, Venice, or Rome — with fresh eyes and raw excitement.
When a photographer visits Italy for the first time, every detail feels magical:
The sun glistening on the waters of Lake Como
The olive groves and vineyard sunsets of Tuscany
The cobblestone streets and Renaissance beauty of Florence
The historic piazzas and iconic ruins of Rome
The reflections of ancient buildings dancing across the canals of Venice
I will approach your wedding day with wonder and curiosity, capturing not only the big moments but also the quiet, intimate details that make your love story unique. Your wedding won’t blend into a photographer’s portfolio — it will be the portfolio. Every photograph will be created with intention, care, and the excitement that comes from fulfilling a dream.
Experience That Travels With Me
Purple dreams
While Italy may be my next destination, photographing love stories in remarkable locations is not new to me.
As a destination wedding photographer, I’ve:
Adapted quickly to new environments and cultures
Built connections with couples from diverse backgrounds
Delivered luxury, editorial-style wedding galleries for clients who value authenticity and artistry
That same dedication, creativity, and professionalism come with me wherever I travel — and Italy is no exception.

Angela & Nick: A Surprise Marriage Proposal in Vieques, Puerto Rico
First-time in Vieques, Puerto Rico, to capture a surprise proposal for Nick and Angela! Hidden cameras, stunning beach views, island adventure, and a love story documented by a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico.
Punta Arenas Beach, Vieques, Puerto Rico
As a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I’ve captured countless love stories, but this one took me somewhere entirely new—Vieques, a small island municipality off the east coast of Puerto Rico. It was actually my first time visiting, and the reason for doing so was because Nick, a gentleman from Virginia, reached out to me wanting to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Angela.
Nick contacted me via my website and we hit it off from the start. He stated that they matched on Hinge just over a year ago and met for dinner the very next night. They both felt it—one of those rare “this is my person” moments—before the appetizers even arrived. Since that first date, everything has been equal parts effortless and magical, from spontaneous road trips to quiet Sunday breakfasts.
The preface
Nick was adamant about proposing outside of the mainland, so this meant booking flights, renting a Jeep, and possibly staying overnight at an Airbnb. After logistics were taken care of on my end, I let Nick know and we were off to the races.
As I arrive to Isla Grande Airport, Angela and Nick sit down in front of me at the gate and I had to contain my laughter because he was literally not supposed to be there; humorously, I later find out he missed his first flight out, thus forcing him to catch the next one. As if that wasn't funny enough, all three of us were the only passengers in the same flight to Vieques.
The magical moment
Nick tried to make small talk with me during the flight and asked questions as if we didn't know who we were because we couldn't blow our cover in front of Angela.
When we arrived at the airport in Vieques, I see Nick heading to the bathroom and I use it as an opportunity for a quick, covert conversation in private. As we're both washing our hands, I take a few minutes to give him a refresher course of what's going to happen later that afternoon at Punta Arenas Beach, the venue Nick had set his sights on.
Sweet bliss
Defusing the anxiety bomb in my client's chest is always a great thing to do because it's a very nerve-racking moment for your proposers. I also take advantage of the moment to tell Nick I'll be checking into Hix Island House, my chosen Airbnb spot, renting a Jeep Wrangler at Avis Rent-A-Car, and heading to Punta Arenas early so that I can scout the best locations on the beach.
As fate would have it, we took a courtesy car to the car rental location and fine-tuned the details. We'd be seeing each other again in a matter of six hours or so, therefore I grabbed snacks at the nearby supermarket and went to check-in at my Airbnb destination.
The sandy knee
I was told by the car rental place that Punta Arenas is infamous for mosquitoes and gnats during Golden Hour, so I made sure to buy some insect repellant; after showering at my Airbnb, I lathered myself in two coats so that flying insects would not be a distraction throughout our event. Little did I know this would prove to be futile.
I get to Punta Arenas Beach in Vieques at least an hour before our scheduled marriage proposal in Puerto Rico. I kindly ask Nick if he's alone so that I can FaceTime him and show him the two areas within his preferred beach that we can shoot in. After contemplating both for a few minutes, we decide on a more secluded part of the beach where only a couple could be seen embracing in the water and enjoying each other's company.
Wholesome
I interrupted them to tell them I was a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico who would shortly be documenting a surprise marriage proposal, and they became quite excited. I had an ulterior motive as well: since Nick had requested a video clip of the actual proposal, I needed a place to hide my tripod and camera discreetly so that Angela didn't suspect a thing if she were to see it out of the corner of her eye.
I asked the couple if I could set the rig between their two beach chairs with one of their towels over it, and they were nice enough to allow it.
Two peas in a black and white pod
Shot number one was in place. The second vantage point was my new GoPro Hero 13 Black strapped to my left shoulder as a POV/behind-the-scenes angle. Nothing beats being able to see an event through my eyes, and there's no better way to experience it than to have your photographer document the process as it happens from his/her eyes.
Finally, my Canon R6 Mark II had my RF 100mm IS L USM lens on it so that I could be discreet from a distance and take that ever-so-important shot of the preface of the couple as well as Nick down on one knee.
Majestic
As the moment arrived, I was in position making sure that I wasn't blocking the static shot from the other camera recording video. Angela was over the moon and gave Nick a resounding yes. I know this not only because of her reaction, but because I strategically placed flowers with a microphone hidden in the stems to capture audio as best as I could.
After a minute or so of allowing the couple to wipe their tears and fix their hair, I approached Angela and Nick and she couldn't believe it! She blurted out: "OMG, it's YOU!" referring to having seen me throughout the course of the day and hiding in plain sight. All three of us got a laugh, and I proceeded to fill Angela in on what had transpired in secret in order for all of this to happen. Her jaw was on the floor in terms of logistics that needed to take place, and Nick and I high-fived each other to seal the deal on an epic adventure.
Golden Hour at Punta Arenas Beach in Vieques, Puerto Rico
Since we were burning daylight, we took advantage of the gorgeous Golden Hour to enjoy an engagement photoshoot with what sun we had left. This is the part where the gnats and mosquitoes started to play a role. Since I was breathing heavy and sweaty from all of the running around, I was an easy target and they definitely didn't let me off the hook. I constantly had around ten of them in my face the entire time and made it very difficult to get shots in; my couple wasn't having too much fun either. As much as I hate to admit this: I must’ve inhaled about five gnats and washed them down with some Pellegrino mineral water shortly thereafter.
Angela and Nick could barely hold still for more than three seconds before having to swat bugs from their face and bodies. We made it happen nonetheless, and I even whipped out some flash photography towards the end, but things became so miserable that we mutually agreed to end the session because it became unbearable to be there. We were forewarned about the insect situation, but when the client knows what they want, it's my goal as a destination wedding photographer in Puerto Rico to oblige.
Perfection personified
A few days later, I sent Angela and Nick their pictures along with their lightly edited video, and they're over the moon. My first time in Vieques, Puerto Rico was an absolute success, and I cannot wait to go back!

A Picture-Perfect Proposal at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico
Discover Yannick & Brionna’s unforgettable Puerto Rico proposal at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve, captured by a top proposal photographer. From secret planning to stunning dome portraits, see why Puerto Rico is perfect for your dream engagement.
Rumors swirl around it hasn’t hit her yet.
As a wedding and proposal photographer in Puerto Rico, I’ve been fortunate to witness countless love stories unfold in breathtaking locations across the island. But few experiences compare to the heartfelt and meticulously planned proposal of Yannick and Brionna at the luxurious Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Río Grande, Puerto Rico.
Yannick, a kind-hearted high school teacher originally from Georgia and now based in Houston, Texas, reached out to me all the way back in May. He had one mission in mind: to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Brionna, in paradise. What stood out from the very beginning was his dedication—not just to making the moment special, but to planning it all in between teaching classes. Our first FaceTime meeting was squeezed in right before one of his lessons started, a true testament to his commitment.
Planning the Perfect Proposal in Puerto Rico
The ring shot.
Our first virtual meeting gave us a chance to break the ice and talk through logistics. While we had to pick up the conversation again later, we ultimately aligned on the vision—and that’s when the magic started taking shape.
The proposal date: June 7th. As always, communication with my proposal clients is kept discreet. Texting becomes the primary mode of contact, and I make sure to stay out of sight to preserve the element of surprise. As a seasoned proposal photographer in Puerto Rico, I know that anticipation is high and nerves can run wild. My job is not only to capture the moment but to ease those nerves.
But with Yannick? That wasn’t the case.
He was the picture of calm. Confident, soft-spoken, and clearly grounded in love, he seemed to know Brionna’s answer before he ever got down on one knee. That quiet confidence was both rare and refreshing.
Collaborating with Incredible Vendors
That’s a happy face if I’ve ever seen one.
This proposal also introduced me to a fantastic new vendor: PR Foam by Designs, led by the lovely Leslie. She brought the "Marry Me" sign that anchored the decor and was an absolute joy to work with. We coordinated our positioning to ensure I could capture the sign, the moment, and the emotions from just the right angle—without being seen.
Pamela, a Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve team member, also played a pivotal role. She went above and beyond to help set the stage, organizing rose petals and even arranging a golf cart ride to the proposal spot. It’s this level of coordination that makes proposals not just successful but unforgettable.
The Moment of Truth
Gotta get in a good silhouette shot.
Hiding behind tall bushes near the decor setup, I tracked the couple’s approach, my Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 ready in hand. This lens is my go-to for discreetly capturing intimate moments from a distance, ensuring the surprise remains intact until the very last second.
And then—it happened.
Giggles, happy tears, and the unmistakable sound of joy filled the air. After Brionna said "yes," Yannick let out a triumphant “She said YES!” loud enough to echo all the way back to Houston. It was beautiful, spontaneous, and perfectly him.
When I finally introduced myself, I was met with a bear hug from Yannick and happy tears from Brionna. A quick makeup touch-up later, we headed to the beach for romantic, sun-drenched portraits against the golden shoreline.
Capturing Iconic Puerto Rican Backdrops
Smitten.
No shoot at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve is complete without photos under the iconic dome—an architectural gem beloved by local wedding photographers. This was my first time shooting there, and it felt like a rite of passage. As someone who’s recently delved deeper into flash photography, I saw the dome as the perfect canvas to flex some creative lighting.
With the couple posed center-dome, I used a diffused soft box and two strategically hidden flashes with colored gels. The result? A majestic blend of warm sunset hues and soft lighting—dramatic, romantic, and unforgettable.
Why Puerto Rico is Perfect for Proposals
Rite of passage.
Puerto Rico offers everything: stunning beaches, lush landscapes, and luxurious resorts like the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve. For couples seeking a unique, romantic, and visually stunning place to start forever, it’s hard to beat this island. And if you’re looking for a proposal or wedding photographer who knows how to blend artistry with emotion, you’ve come to the right place.
From the planning to the lighting, from hiding in the bushes to sharing hugs under domes, this is what I live for. Helping couples create and capture memories in Puerto Rico that will last a lifetime. If you’re ready to take the leap and propose in Puerto Rico, let’s make it epic.
Celebrating a Milestone Birthday in Old San Juan with a Luxury Portrait Session
Lina celebrated her milestone birthday with a golden hour photo session in Old San Juan. From Palacio Provincial to El Morro, we captured her vibrant spirit with editorial-style portraits. This blog shares her story and the magic of combining flash photography with Puerto Rico’s timeless charm.
The incredible Lina
A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of photographing Lina, an event planner from Sunrise, Florida, who was visiting Puerto Rico to celebrate a milestone birthday. What made this session especially meaningful was that Lina found me through Instagram—after seeing a family session I shot for a former wedding client from 2022. She reached out through my website and shared that, while it was rare for her to plan something just for herself, this birthday felt like a special moment she wanted to commemorate.
Her one request? To make the photos feel Puerto Rican—visually rich, nostalgic, and personal. Old San Juan immediately came to mind for both of us. With its cobblestone streets, Spanish colonial architecture, historic landmarks, and waterfront views, it’s the perfect setting for portraits that celebrate both heritage and beauty.
Bringing the Vision to Life in Old San Juan
Everything is a picture waiting to happen in Old San Juan
To help bring her vision to life, I brought along my assistant Bryan, who not only lives in Old San Juan but also specializes in helping me set up off-camera flash, which is one of my favorite ways to create dimension and drama in natural-light environments. There's something incredibly powerful about combining Golden Hour sunlight with a touch of flash—it creates portraits that are luminous and layered, perfect for capturing personal milestones.
We met around 5:45 p.m., just in time for that golden-hour glow. Our first stop was Palacio Provincial, a stunning boutique hotel that serves as the quieter sister to the well-known El Convento. With its intimate charm, grand staircase, and historic façade, it was the ideal place to begin.
From there, we strolled through the vibrant streets of Old San Juan, snapping spontaneous walking shots and using local greenery to frame Lina against the city’s beautiful textures. We headed toward La Puerta de San Juan, the iconic red gate that once served as the city’s main entrance. Along the way, I pointed out that “everywhere you look in Old San Juan is a possible picture—if you look closely enough.” That kind of visual storytelling is what keeps this location fresh every single time I shoot here.
Signature Shots with a View
Tomás is loving life
As we made our way up to La Rogativa, I captured one of my signature shots—a dramatic flash-lit portrait featuring the garita, the iconic sentry box that overlooks the bay. This shot has become something of a calling card for me on social media, and I love how it blends artistry, architecture, and emotion.
Our final stop was Castillo San Felipe del Morro, more commonly known as El Morro. It’s arguably the most recognizable landmark in Puerto Rico and offers one of the best sunset views on the entire island. From this vantage point, you can take in the golden horizon as sailboats and ships slowly make their way into the harbor.
Bryan and I got extra creative with our lighting setup, even incorporating a massive cruise ship that happened to be passing by. The mix of golden sky, textured stone, and crisp flash lighting made for a set of images that felt both cinematic and deeply personal.
Celebrating with More Than Just Photos
Leading lines to Lina
After the shoot, Lina was so thrilled with the photos—just from what she saw on the back of my camera—that we invited her to join us at Taberna Lúpulo, a popular local bar known for its craft beer selection and laid-back vibe. We spent the rest of the evening enjoying snacks, drinks, and great conversation as if we had known each other for years.
It was the perfect way to wrap up a session that felt less like work and more like celebrating with an old friend. This is why I do what I do—not just for the photos, but for the moments of connection and joy that happen along the way.

Surprise Beach Proposal in Luquillo, Puerto Rico: How Shawn Popped the Question at La Pared
Shawn’s surprise proposal to Alanise at La Pared in Luquillo, Puerto Rico was filled with emotion, thoughtful details, and a dash of tropical unpredictability. With the help of The Heart Bandits and a few clever tricks behind the camera, I had the honor of capturing every unforgettable moment.
The climactic moment and happiness that ensued
If you’ve been dreaming of a beach proposal in Puerto Rico, this story is for you. Set against the stunning backdrop of La Pared in Luquillo, a scenic beach town on the island’s northeast coast, this surprise proposal was romantic, thoughtful, and filled with meaning. With The Heart Bandits on planning duty and my camera ready to capture every second, it was the perfect blend of love and logistics. Let’s dive into how Shawn pulled off this unforgettable moment for Alanise.
Why Luquillo, Puerto Rico Was the Perfect Proposal Destination
He did good
When Shawn began planning the proposal, he knew it needed to be special—and personal. Luquillo Beach offered the ideal blend of beauty and sentimentality. Known for its surf culture and less-crowded shoreline, La Pared served as a quiet, stunning canvas for his big moment. Even more meaningful? Alanise has Puerto Rican roots, and this location added a personal, cultural connection that made the day even more memorable.
Meet the Couple: Shawn & Alanise
Best picnic ever
Shawn and Alanise are both active-duty members of the United States Air Force, stationed roughly 40 minutes outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. Shawn originally hails from Long Island, New York, and Alanise’s family is from Puerto Rico—making this a destination proposal that felt like a homecoming.
The timing couldn’t have been more poignant. Taking place just after Memorial Day, it was a powerful reminder of their service and love. I made sure to personally thank them both for their commitment and sacrifice.
Pre-Proposal Planning: Nervous Groom, Stealthy Photographer
Kids
A few days before the big event, I reached out to Shawn to check in. I always like to connect with my grooms ahead of time—this helps ease nerves, refine the vision, and reassure them that they’re in good hands. Shawn was excited, a little anxious (who wouldn’t be?), but ultimately ready to take the leap.
On proposal day, I arrived early to scope out the scene and meet with the decorator on-site. La Pared is beautiful but wild—it’s more of a surf beach than a lounging spot. There was a fair amount of debris and uneven sand, but she made it work, setting up a gorgeous floral arch that looked straight out of a Pinterest board.
Battling the Elements (Like a Pro)
Surreal
Of course, Puerto Rico weather can be unpredictable. Light rain came and went in ten-minute intervals, prompting a bit of concern from Alanise’s father. I reassured him that I’d been monitoring the radar and the drizzle would pass soon—which it did.
Knowing we were shooting on the east coast, I didn’t count on a golden sunset. Instead, I adapted my setup to use the Sun as a key light, which helped add beautiful, natural dimension to their photos. I even brought a folding beach chair and pretended to watch the surfers—just another day in the life of a stealthy proposal photographer!
The Signal, the Moment, the YES
Arms raised in a V
As Shawn and Alanise walked hand in hand down the beach, I knew we were getting close. I flipped on my GoPro Hero 13, mounted to my Canon R6 Mark II, to record the entire moment from my point of view.
Our secret signal? A twist of his diamond stud earring. That was my cue. As soon as I saw it, I sprang into action, photographing the entire proposal in both portrait and landscape mode to give them a full range of storytelling images.
Of course, nothing ever goes perfectly—a free-spirited photographer perched on a nearby boulder photobombed most of my wide shots. 😅 But with a little Photoshop magic, I ensured that nothing distracted from the emotional power of the moment.
Post-Proposal Celebration: Picnic, Portraits & Flash Magic
Bliss
After Alanise said “yes”—with tears, kisses, and so much joy—we transitioned into a romantic picnic setup, complete with champagne, florals, and heartfelt candid moments.
As the sun continued to drop, we moved to the shoreline for some editorial-style portraits, followed by a bold flash photography session to close out the evening with a dramatic, high-fashion vibe. I love combining natural light and artificial lighting to create galleries that are both timeless and cinematic.
Final Thoughts and a Note to Future Clients
Epic
I’m absolutely thrilled with how these images turned out, and even more grateful to have witnessed such a meaningful chapter in Shawn and Alanise’s love story. Being a proposal photographer in Puerto Rico means I get to experience these once-in-a-lifetime moments—and I never take that for granted.
If you’re planning a surprise proposal in Puerto Rico, I’d love to be part of it. Whether you're working with The Heart Bandits or organizing something on your own, I’ll be there to capture every second with care, creativity, and a whole lot of heart.

A Surprise Marriage Proposal at El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo, Puerto Rico
When Sean reached out to plan a surprise proposal for his girlfriend Carson at El Conquistador Resort, I knew it was going to be special. With secret texts, a hidden camera, and the perfect sunset, this Fajardo engagement turned into one of the most heartwarming moments I’ve had the honor to capture.
The proposal
Sean, a young man from the Boston area, reached out to me through my website with an exciting mission: he wanted to propose to his girlfriend, Carson, during their trip to Puerto Rico. His chosen venue? The breathtaking El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo—a place I’d previously experienced for corporate events, but never through the lens of love and nuptials.
Needless to say, I was thrilled.
The resort is vast and filled with hidden gems, and I was excited to explore it from a fresh perspective. As we approached the big day, Sean and I kept in contact—quietly. He had to be stealthy, of course. At times, he’d sneak off under the guise of a bathroom break just to text me updates. In a hilarious twist, he even saved my contact as “Uncle” on his phone to avoid raising any suspicion. Now that’s commitment!
Setting the Stage
So wholesome
On the day of the proposal, I packed up my essentials and hit the road around 3 p.m. Fajardo is about an hour and fifteen minutes from where I’m based, so I wanted to arrive with time to scout the exact location Sean had chosen.
He had arranged for the proposal to happen right beside Coquí Water Park, one of the resort’s most iconic spots. At the entrance, I met Fabiola, a newly hired staff member in charge of checking guests into the park. I quickly let her in on our covert operation. She was thrilled to play a role in the surprise and agreed to act as a cover—pretending I was just a guest asking for towels when Sean and Carson walked by.
The Moment Unfolds
Let’s sail this life…together
Not long after, I saw them: Sean in a green shirt and khakis, Carson in a flowing green dress—just as he had described. I discreetly grabbed my Canon EOS R6 Mark II, paired with my RF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L USM lens. This is my go-to setup for surprise proposals in Puerto Rico because it lets me stay hidden while capturing crisp, intimate moments from afar.
I found cover in the nearby bushes (yes, bushes!) and started snapping shots as the couple approached. Within moments, Sean dropped to one knee and pulled out the ring.
Carson’s reaction was absolutely priceless—one of the most genuinely emotional responses I’ve had the pleasure of capturing. Her face radiated shock, joy, and pure love. It was wholesome, magical, and completely unscripted. Even as I write this, I’m not sure it’s fully sunk in for her yet!
Capturing the Memories
Sunkissed
After the big moment, I introduced myself and showed them the hidden Insta360 X3 camera mounted on my main camera body, which had captured everything in video format. This is something I love offering to couples—an immersive way to relive such a powerful moment.
We then moved into our portrait session. I worked with the beautiful natural light until sunset, then switched to my flash kit, using the Godox AD200 Pro Mark II to create dynamic, balanced shots that honored both the couple and the breathtaking Fajardo landscape.
Planning Your Own Proposal in Puerto Rico?
He came…he conquered.
If you're considering popping the question in Puerto Rico, I’d love to help you plan and capture it all—from stealthy communication to that unforgettable moment on one knee. With a photographer who knows the island, the light, and the art of discretion, your proposal can be as seamless and magical as Sean and Carson’s.

Caught in the Rain, Covered in Love: A Piñones Proposal Story
When Jesse planned a surprise proposal in Piñones, Puerto Rico, he had no idea the rain—and fate—would both play major roles. With help from The Heart Bandits and a personal connection that brought us full circle, this unforgettable beachfront moment was one for the books.
The pinnacle moment.
Yesterday, I photographed yet another surprise marriage proposal—my 15th in just 3 months (possibly a personal record). Once again, I had the pleasure of teaming up with The Heart Bandits, one of the world’s top luxury proposal planners.
This time, it was Jesse who was ready to get down on one knee and propose to Talisha, the woman he met during Super Bowl weekend a few years back. From that weekend on, they’ve been inseparable. He felt it was finally time to cement the love they’ve built together.
Pure
As is tradition for me, I gave Jesse a call the night before. I always like to have a quick “jitter-management” conversation with the groom-to-be—it’s a nerve-racking moment for anyone, and I know he was feeling the weight of it.
As I’m dialing, I notice his area code: (954). That’s Broward County, Florida, a place I once called home for six years. When Jesse picks up, we immediately hit it off—turns out he currently lives in Miramar, the exact same city I used to live in during my time in South Florida. That shared history broke the ice instantly. He knew he was in good hands, and we quickly went through the checklist of what to do and (more importantly) what not to do.
Gotta call the family.
Before we hung up, Jesse told me he was feeling much more confident about the big day ahead. And I don’t blame him—it was going to be one of the most important days of his life.
This was a morning proposal, something I don’t typically do (especially when Golden Hour lighting is so coveted). We were scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in Piñones, a coastal sector of Loíza, Puerto Rico, known for its vibrant beaches and Afro-Caribbean roots.
The ring
Now, let me tell you—it had been raining nonstop for nearly three weeks. We were on high alert watching the weather, just like I had to do for my previous proposal shoot. I even got hit with a heavy downpour on the drive to the location and genuinely feared we might have to reschedule.
I followed the pin Michelle sent me via email, only to find out the decorator had set up seven minutes away from that spot. Thankfully, I’m ridiculously punctual, so I had plenty of time to double back and make it to the correct setup.
Palm trees with the leading line.
Funny twist—when I arrived, there happened to be a surf contest happening about 300 feet away. Perfect! These events always require us to “hide in plain sight” so we don’t spoil the surprise for the bride-to-be. I blended in perfectly with the crowd.
I spotted Jesse walking through one of the beach’s man-made entrances, and quickly turned around to make some last-minute adjustments to my gear. Specifically, I fine-tuned my K&F Concept 3-in-1 filter—a combo ND, circular polarizer, and black mist I had picked up specifically for these types of shoots. It helped me tame the harsh sunlight, eliminate glare from the ocean and their jewelry, and create that dreamy bloom effect photographers call halation. The filter was a game-changer, especially with the still-overcast skies from all the recent rainfall. It helped their colors pop.
Offset but in love.
Then—right after Talisha said a resounding “YES!”—it started pouring. I came prepared. I darted to my bag, grabbed the umbrella I knew I’d end up needing, and sprinted back through the sand to cover the couple. They were so thankful—not just for the shelter, but for the fact that someone was looking out for them in the middle of the chaos. We huddled under the umbrella for about 15 minutes as the rain and wind hit us from the side. My camera gear is weather-sealed enough for a light drizzle, but this was pushing it. And then—the Sun broke through.
We were all relieved and so grateful. I used that moment to do what I do best: capture candid portraits from a safe distance, with gentle direction when needed. That’s essentially my style—photojournalism with a creative twist. It's what I’m known for here in Puerto Rico. The rest of the session went beautifully. They were all smiles. And honestly—so was I.
Making a splash.
