Once everything was dialed in, I clipped on my Spyder Holster and moved freely around the ceremony to document the experience.

The weather couldn’t have been more cooperative. Despite a steady breeze rolling in from the ocean, the sky remained remarkably clear.

Then, unexpectedly, the ceremony paused.

A gentleman nearby began calling out loudly in search of stray cats he was feeding along the beach.

While the interruption was certainly unexpected, Christina and Eric handled the moment with grace and humor. It was the last thing anyone would anticipate pausing a wedding ceremony, but in hindsight it became one of those small, memorable moments that couples laugh about for years.

Once the cats were happily fed and the beach grew quiet again, Tim resumed the ceremony.

I arrived around 9:15 a.m. to find Katherinne, the owner of I Do Proposal, already deep into setup with her right-hand powerhouse, Claudia. That’s when I realized…this wasn’t just any picnic.

This was a full table-and-chair luxury setup — elegant, intentional, and honestly something I hadn’t photographed before. Katherinne smiled and told me it had been waiting in storage for the right moment.

Turns out, the right moment had arrived.

     Some weddings arrive with years of planning, guest lists, and expectations. Others arrive quietly, almost unexpectedly, and feel all the more intentional because of it.

     Mike and Nataliia met less than a year ago in the most ordinary of places — a laundromat. No grand setup, no elaborate backstory. Just two lives intersecting at the right moment. On New Year’s Day, during a vacation to Puerto Rico, they decided to elope and begin a new chapter together.

     This was a second marriage for both of them. Each is a parent to two children from a previous relationship, and with that life experience comes clarity. This wasn’t about creating a spectacle. It was about choosing each other — simply, deliberately, and without noise.

     Tim Blackford officiated the ceremony, and while the tone was heartfelt, it wasn’t rigid. Nataliia, exuberant and expressive by nature, couldn’t help herself. She chimed in playfully, adding commentary and comic relief as the vows progressed, interrupting just enough to make everyone laugh and to remind us that this wasn’t a performance — it was real life.

     Mike stood beside her with an easy calm, completely comfortable letting Nataliia be exactly who she is. His laid-back presence created space for her flamboyant, joyful personality to shine. There was no need to balance or rein her in. The dynamic between them was effortless — grounded meets expressive, steady meets spark.

     It was one of those ceremonies where nothing felt rehearsed, yet everything felt right.

     So I dropped them off nearby, camera packed away, while they laughed, stepped out, and continued on foot — newly married, blending back into the rhythm of the city. It was the perfect, unceremonious ending to a day that never tried to be anything more than what it was.

Their rich history in design and styling incentivized them to take things up a notch—creating immersive, emotionally driven proposal experiences that feel intentional and elevated. Their attention to detail has kept me busy as a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, documenting once-in-a-lifetime moments that deserve more than a cellphone photo.

From anticipation to “yes,” every second deserves to be remembered.

     Surprise proposals are how I love to stay creatively fulfilled when I’m not shooting weddings. While getting to know Elias, he confessed that he met Denise on the ever-so-popular dating app Tinder—proof that modern love stories can still lead to timeless moments. Theirs is absolutely a success story, and one that deserved to be documented with intention and care.

     Elias comes from a beautifully blended background—Egyptian and French—while Denise has Mexican roots. Elias shared that he originally came to Puerto Rico to grow his business, and while it took a little convincing, Denise eventually made the move with him. That leap of faith says everything you need to know about their bond. From that point on, they were inseparable, and Elias knew it was time to secure his emotional future by asking Denise to be his wife.

Documentary-style proposal photography that feels honest, raw, and timeless.

     We broke the ice over a FaceTime call, during which Elias mentioned he wanted the proposal documented not only through photography but with video as well—something my team and I specialize in. As an experienced surprise proposal photographer in Puerto Rico, I walked him through the flow of the day, shared strategic pointers, and helped him visualize how everything would unfold seamlessly. Once the plan was in place, we signed off, confident and excited.

     The proposal location of choice was Aviones Beach, a spot typically reserved for surfers due to its strong waves. What makes this location special—aside from its raw beauty—is its natural privacy. Fewer beachgoers mean a more intimate experience for the couple and a cleaner visual story for me. From a post-processing perspective, it also means fewer distractions and a more editorial, polished final gallery.

A reminder that the best moments are the ones you don’t rehearse.

     I arrived early, as I always do, to photograph the décor and determine where to place the alternate camera on a tripod for video coverage. Preparation is everything when documenting moments that can’t be recreated. I opted for a long 100mm lens to keep my distance while preserving intimacy, paired with a zoom lens on my second camera to capture both sweeping environmental frames and tighter, emotional moments of Elias dropping to one knee. This documentary-style approach allows moments to unfold naturally.

     Elias arrived wearing white and khaki—my go-to recommendation for men proposing. Neutral tones photograph beautifully, help subjects stand out against Puerto Rico’s vibrant landscapes, and create a timeless aesthetic. To my serendipitous delight, Denise arrived wearing a stunning white dress as well. It felt as though the universe had already aligned itself with their story, and from that moment on, everything flowed effortlessly.

A Wind-Swept Surprise Proposal in Ocean Park, Puerto Rico

When the moment feels effortless, the memories last forever.

     Some proposals are meticulously planned down to the second. Others feel like a leap of faith—equal parts excitement, nerves, and love. Austin and Bailey’s surprise marriage proposal in Puerto Rico was both.

     I was brought on by I Do Proposal, an up-and-coming marriage proposal planning company here in Puerto Rico, to photograph a heartfelt surprise proposal along the shores of Ocean Park. Their client, Austin, had one goal in mind: ask his longtime girlfriend, Bailey, to spend forever with him—somewhere unforgettable.

From Georgia to Puerto Rico: A Shared Beginning

A quiet beach, a deep breath, and one life-changing question.

     The morning of the proposal, I reached out to Austin to go over final details. His phone number started with a 404 area code, one I know all too well. It turns out Austin and Bailey are from Georgia, a state where I once lived when I first moved to the U.S. That unexpected connection instantly broke the ice.

     Austin works in cybersecurity, Bailey at a hospital back home, and the two have been inseparable for nearly six years. Like many couples, their journey has been built on shared growth, stability, and genuine companionship—exactly the kind of foundation that makes proposal days so emotionally charged.

The Location: Yardley Street Beach Access, Condado

Wind in the air, love everywhere.

     While Ocean Park was the original vision, Katherinne, owner of I Do Proposal, selected Yardley Street in Condado for its discreet beach access and generous space. The entrance opens directly onto the sand, making it ideal for a private setup without feeling isolated—especially important for surprise proposals.

     That afternoon, the wind was relentless, which meant timing was everything. The decor—minimalist and intentional—consisted of a circle of red roses near the water, rose petals inside the circle, and a chilled bottle of champagne with flutes waiting nearby. We waited until the very last second to place the final petals to keep them from scattering across the beach.

A Perfectly Executed Proposal

She said yes, and the world stood still.

     Before the proposal, I gave Austin the usual rundown: where to stand, what to do, and—just as importantly—what not to do. No matter how many proposals I photograph (and I’ve shot over forty this year alone), the nerves never disappear. Asking someone to spend the rest of their life with you is a monumental moment.

As Austin and Bailey approached, everything fell into place.

     Austin gently positioned Bailey against the wind, an often-overlooked detail that makes a world of difference. Hair flying forward during the proposal moment can block reactions and emotions on camera—something I always coach proposers on. He even remembered to carefully tuck her hair behind her ear at just the right moment.

     Bailey’s reaction was pure, emotional, and completely unguarded. She didn’t see it coming at all.

After the “Yes”

Emotion over perfection—always.

     Once the initial wave of emotions settled and I knew I had the proposal documented exactly as it deserved, I stepped in to introduce myself—usually to a newly engaged partner who is either overwhelmed with emotion or still processing what just happened.

This time, it was both.

     Austin exhaled what felt like six years’ worth of anticipation, and we transitioned seamlessly into portraits. These two were a dream to photograph—affectionate, playful, and entirely wrapped up in each other. Their energy aligned perfectly with my approach to proposal photography: intimate, passionate, and real.

     As the sun dipped lower, I closed out the session with flash photography, adding a cinematic edge to an already unforgettable moment. When couples are this present with each other, they forget the camera exists—and that’s when the magic happens.

Love always finds its way back home — sometimes even after 17 years.

     Every so often, a story comes along that reminds me why I do what I do. Larry’s first email landed in my inbox like a beam of light — heartfelt, vulnerable, full of history and love that had clearly been waiting years to bloom again.

He wrote:

“I saw your website and fell in love... I’m going to propose to my boyfriend Victor… We actually dated 17 years ago… We parted as friends, reunited this year, and we are ready. It’s time.”

     From that moment, I knew this wasn’t just another surprise proposal in Puerto Rico. This was a full-circle moment, a love story touching down again right where it began — on the island that had once been their grand romantic gesture.

Reconnecting and Planning the Perfect Proposal

Two hearts, one sunrise, and a forever that finally arrived.

     Larry and I connected over FaceTime the moment he had a chance to sneak away. He joked that he set my notifications to silent so Victor wouldn’t suspect anything — borderline cheating, he laughed. That’s when I knew this proposal wasn’t just important… it was sacred.

     Originally, we planned to shoot at La Concha Resort, a venue where I’ve photographed countless weddings and engagements. But life happens, and that location fell through. Instead of stress, we pivoted — and honestly, the universe did us a favor.

     We set our sights east toward El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo, a stunning oceanfront property known for breathtaking sunrises. Why sunrise? Because Larry was drawn to the idea of a Blue Hour proposal — that magical sliver of time before the sun rises, when the world is quiet, the light is soft, and the moment belongs solely to the couple.

Blue Hour: A Challenge Worth Every Second

     I woke up at 3:00 a.m., drove to Old San Juan to pick up my videographer, Bryan, and headed to Fajardo. By the time we arrived, the sky was still pitch black. We valeted the car, hopped onto the resort’s funicular, and started prepping gear we could barely see.

Blue Hour photography is rewarding — but it’s not for the faint of heart.
Your location is empty.
Your colors turn cinematic.
But… you’re also shooting in near darkness. As 6:00 a.m. approached, the faintest hint of orange teased the horizon. It was time.

The Moment Larry Dropped to One Knee

Love is love — and this moment was pure magic.

     Communication with Larry was spotty — understandably, since he couldn’t risk letting Victor see a single notification from me. Thankfully, the concierge team escorted them down to the green area we had planned for.

Bryan and I hid behind a gazebo, sneaking around like undercover agents every time they shifted direction.

When they reached the palm trees, morning light finally began revealing the world around us.

I had told Larry:
“Drop to one knee at 6:10 a.m. — not earlier.”
He did it at 6:15 a.m.

Still a touch dim… but the heart doesn’t care about ideal lighting. He felt the moment. He took it.

Victor turned toward him — shocked, emotional — and they slipped matching rings onto each other’s hands. I’d never seen matching proposal rings before. It was beautiful.

And then? A moment I’ll never forget:
Larry turned to Bryan and whispered, “Francis…?”

That’s how dark it still was. Even after FaceTime, he couldn’t tell us apart. We laughed for minutes.

A GQ-Inspired Portrait Session in NYC With a Fellow Creative I Admire

Susan’s use of the dark aesthetic is easily one of the things that made it a no-brainer for me.

     As a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I spend most of my life behind the camera—photographing weddings, proposals, and destination celebrations. But for quite some time, I’ve been wanting to experience the other side of the lens. I had tried plenty to refresh my portfolio using behind-the-scenes content from weddings, having team members photograph me while I worked. While those images were helpful, they didn’t reflect the polished, editorial look I had in mind.

     What I truly wanted was something with intention: a stylized, GQ-inspired portrait session that captured the way I feel as an artist. Clean, sophisticated, timeless. And once I finally slowed down enough to think about it, the person I wanted to collaborate with became obvious.

It’s almost as if Susan knew she’d be rocking me in front of black V-Flats

     I wanted to work with Canon Explorer of Light Susan Stripling — someone whose work I’ve admired for a while and whose approach to light, mood, and storytelling aligns closely with my own. Among photographers in New York City, she’s someone whose artistic values mirror mine: thoughtful use of light, a love of shadows, and a natural intuition for mood and tone that feels familiar to me. We were already speaking the same language creatively, so reaching out felt natural.

     I emailed her with a laid-back, friendly pitch about the idea. She replied warmly, and soon enough we set up a FaceTime call. From the first minute, it felt like catching up with someone I’d known for years. We laughed, swapped stories, introduced our pets, and even got to say hello to Bill, her partner and fellow photographer. The energy was easy, familiar, and genuinely fun. A few days later, the invoice was in my inbox; I paid it and immediately booked a flight straight to Midtown Manhattan.

Landing in New York City

Susan made me look tough but I’ll have you know I’m a Pop-Tart: hard on the outside but soft in the middle.

     On November 9th, I arrived at JFK and—despite the federal shutdown—managed to get through smoothly. From there, I hopped on the train and headed to 38th Street to check into the La Quinta by Wyndham, which happened to be directly across from Susan’s studio.

     The next morning, I laid out my outfit: a light gray suit we’d already talked about through text, paired with a black shirt and tie. But the real star, as it turned out, was the black pea coat I packed for the cold weather. The second she saw it, she knew it had to be part of the session. Honestly, she wasn’t wrong.

Walking Into the Studio

I’ll probably hear from the modeling agency very soon if I’m being honest.

     With the studio just across the street, I left five minutes before the session. Susan greeted me at the door with a hug—warm, friendly, no pretense—and Bill followed with an outstretched hand and a smile. It immediately set the tone for the whole shoot: relaxed, collaborative, and comfortable.

     After a quick catch-up, Susan complimented the outfit choice and started pulling out V-Flats. We headed toward the massive windows overlooking 38th Street, planning to use them as our main light source. Both she and I love natural light, so it made perfect sense to keep the setup simple and let the city do the work.

Gotta throw in a good black and white. Am I right?!

     I loved that we didn’t need flash. With only an hour together—and plenty of conversation in between shots—working with window light kept everything flowing. Before starting, I suggested playing some Lucy Dacus, one of her favorite artists. I always feel that when you’re listening to something that inspires you, the creativity just comes easier.

Shooting With a Colleague Whose Work I Respect

Had to sneak in a pick out in the streets because, you know…New York City. C’mon…

     Throughout the session, Susan moved between her Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 and the 85mm f/1.2, making small adjustments, finding interesting angles, and shaping the light with both light and dark V-Flats. Her use of shadow and negative fill felt very much in line with my own approach—and that’s exactly why this collaboration felt so natural.

Might actually be my favorite from the bunch.

     She positioned me near the window, playing with pockets of light and areas of darkness in ways that reminded me of how I work during weddings in Puerto Rico. We weren’t trying to reinvent anything; we were simply two photographers who share similar instincts.

     She didn’t show me the back of the camera—and I didn’t want to see it. I trusted her completely; I made this very clear. Susan also let me record the entire session using my new DJI Osmo 360 camera and even let me clip a mic on her for crisp audio. Those behind-the-scenes clips are going to be gold.

Being in front of the camera—especially in a controlled, intentional environment—felt refreshing in the best way.

     It reminded me of why I love this craft. It reminded me that even photographers need portraits that feel true to who we are. And collaborating with someone whose style aligns with mine made the whole experience feel effortless—not like working with an unreachable expert, but like creating with a colleague I genuinely connect with.

I need to work on my hands. They’re starting to call me ‘scissor fingers’.
