LGBT Marriage Proposal at Escambrón Beach, Puerto Rico | Griffin & Nick's Oceanfront Love Story

Some stories don't need elaborate plot twists to become unforgettable. They simply need two people who never stopped choosing each other.

Griffin and Nicholas met years ago in high school in Rhode Island. Like so many great love stories, theirs began quietly. A friendship blossomed into something deeper until, before either of them realized it, they had become inseparable. Years later, Nick decided their next chapter deserved more than an ordinary proposal. It deserved an entirely different island.

Puerto Rico became that destination.

Working alongside the incredible team at I Do Proposal, Puerto Rico's premier marriage proposal planning company, we designed an intimate oceanfront experience overlooking the dramatic cliffs of Escambrón Beach, just minutes from the historic streets of Old San Juan. The vision was elegant without being excessive. Crisp white florals. Soft candlelight. Rose petals scattered across the ground. The Caribbean Sea serving as the only backdrop necessary.

Minimalism has a way of allowing emotions to become the centerpiece.

Every unforgettable proposal begins with a walk toward forever.

As a wedding and proposal photographer in Puerto Rico, I arrived long before the couple did. There is always something magical about those quiet moments before everything changes forever. The flowers stood perfectly still. The waves crashed rhythmically against the rocks below. Golden Hour slowly began painting the coastline with warm light.

Then they arrived.

Hand in hand.

Completely unaware that within minutes one of them would become a fiancé.

Watching proposals unfold is unlike photographing any other moment. There are no second chances. No rehearsals. No do-overs. Everything happens exactly once, making authenticity the greatest luxury a photographer can capture.

Joy looks different for every couple, but it always feels the same.

Nick gently held Griffin's hand for what felt like an eternity.

There was no rush.

No dramatic speech designed for spectators.

Just two people standing together at the edge of the Caribbean, allowing silence to speak where words could not.

Then came the moment.

One knee met the earth.

Time stood still.

The engagement ring that marked the beginning of their next chapter.

Griffin's expression transformed from curiosity into disbelief before overflowing into tears, laughter and the kind of smile that can only come from knowing your life has just changed forever.

After the ring found its new home, they embraced.

Not for a few seconds.

For nearly half a minute.

Long enough for the world around them to disappear.

Long enough for me to forget I was holding a camera.

Those are the moments photographers chase. Not poses. Not perfection. Connection.

Every detail of this oceanfront proposal was designed with intention and elegance.

Only after their emotions had settled slightly did I walk over, introduce myself and congratulate them. I briefly explained how our engagement session would unfold before guiding them into what I lovingly call intimate portraiture.

This is my favorite part of almost every engagement session.

I intentionally keep couples physically close together. Three points of contact are always present. Hands resting on shoulders. Fingers intertwined. Foreheads touching. Arms wrapped around each other.

There is a reason behind this approach.

Immediately following a proposal, emotions remain wonderfully raw. The excitement hasn't worn off. The reality hasn't fully settled in. By encouraging closeness instead of distance, those emotions linger just a little longer, allowing me to photograph genuine affection instead of manufactured poses.

These images become less about smiling at the camera and more about forgetting the camera was ever there.

Their smiles said everything words never could.

As the evening progressed, we transitioned into what I call offset portraiture.

Rather than placing couples directly face-to-face, I stagger them slightly, allowing one person to stand subtly ahead of the other. This creates visual layers that add depth, dimension and an editorial feel to the photographs. Sometimes I ask for quiet confidence. Other times I encourage laughter. Every couple writes their story differently, and my job is simply to illustrate it honestly.

By now, the champagne had patiently waited long enough.

A bottle resting on ice soon became part of the celebration.

Nick popped the cork as Griffin laughed uncontrollably, champagne spraying through the ocean breeze. I switched to off-camera flash, exposing for the fading ambient light while freezing thousands of sparkling droplets in midair. It is one of my favorite techniques because it transforms an already joyful moment into something cinematic.

A close embrace before reality had even begun to sink in.

Almost as if the celebration itself became suspended in time.

Then Puerto Rico offered one final gift.

The sunset.

Clouds stretched across the horizon, painted in rich teal and warm orange tones that looked almost too perfect to be real. After photographing Griffin's engagement ring, I leaned into dramatic flash photography, allowing the colorful sky to contrast beautifully against the newly engaged couple.

The result felt less like documentation and more like a still frame from a feature film.

As beautiful as the photographs are, they are not what I remember most.

What stays with me is the privilege.

A simple embrace made extraordinary by the setting sun.

The privilege of witnessing love without conditions.

As someone who proudly stands beside the LGBTQIA+ community, sessions like these carry a deeper meaning. It is heartbreaking that in today's world there are still photographers who refuse to document same-sex couples simply because of who they love.

Love should never require permission to be celebrated.

It deserves to be preserved with the same enthusiasm, artistry and care afforded to every other couple.

Being an LGBT-friendly wedding photographer in Puerto Rico isn't a marketing statement for me. It is a reflection of what I believe.

The champagne that tasted the sweetest.

Everyone deserves to feel seen.

Everyone deserves photographs that tell their story honestly.

Everyone deserves to celebrate without fear of judgment.

For one unforgettable evening, I was invited into Griffin and Nick's world. I watched two lives become one beside the Caribbean Sea, and I walked away reminded why I fell in love with photography in the first place.
