When a Professional Athlete Chooses Puerto Rico for a Luxury Marriage Proposal
Professional basketball player Zeb Jackson chose Puerto Rico for one of the biggest moments of his life. Follow the story behind this elegant white rose beachfront proposal at Escambrón Beach and see how a Puerto Rico proposal photographer captured every genuine moment.

There are moments as a Puerto Rico proposal photographer when you realize you're documenting more than a simple surprise. You're preserving a milestone that will become part of a family's history, and for one afternoon at Escambrón Beach, that privilege belonged to me.
I arrived shortly after 5 p.m., long before the couple would make their entrance. If there is one rule I never break as a marriage proposal photographer in Puerto Rico, it's that I will never be late to a proposal. The nerves, anticipation, and moving pieces behind the scenes demand preparation, and that extra hour often becomes one of my favorite parts of the day.

When I arrived, Dani from I Do Proposal was already transforming a quiet corner of Escambrón into a luxury oceanside picnic. The setup featured elegant white roses, candlelight accents, champagne, and chocolate-covered strawberries, all carefully arranged against the Caribbean Sea. Minimalist designs like these are among my favorites to photograph because they never compete with the couple. Instead, they create an elevated environment where genuine emotion becomes the centerpiece.
This particular marriage proposal in Puerto Rico carried a unique element. The groom-to-be was professional basketball player Zeb Jackson, who currently plays overseas in Belgium. While Puerto Rico regularly welcomes celebrities, athletes, and public figures seeking privacy, the island also offers something even more valuable: the ability to celebrate life's biggest moments away from the spotlight.

The skies that afternoon weren't perfect. Every summer, Saharan dust drifts across the Caribbean, softening the horizon and muting the dramatic blues Puerto Rico is known for. But sometimes imperfect conditions create beautiful photographs. The hazy light wrapped around the decor, softened the ocean backdrop, and gave the entire evening an almost cinematic quality.
At 6 p.m., I received the text message I'd been waiting for: "We've arrived."

Parking around Escambrón can be unpredictable, but that slight delay worked in our favor. Coincidentally, a small and intimate wedding ceremony was taking place just a few yards away, giving me the perfect opportunity to blend into the scene. Camera in hand, I quietly posed as the event photographer while keeping an eye on the path leading toward the proposal setup.
I watched as Zeb and Kathleen walked hand in hand toward the white rose picnic. The moment they reached the decor, he gently took both of her hands. Instantly, I could tell she knew what was coming.
Genuine emotions and intimate portraits define this luxury proposal photography session in Puerto Rico.
As the sun began its slow descent, I photographed the proposal in both portrait and landscape compositions, making sure to preserve every fleeting expression. One detail stood out immediately: before getting down on one knee, I was happy to see Zeb followed my instructions carefully of tucking Kathleen's beautiful curly hair behind her right ear, making sure her reaction would be visible. It was such a small gesture, but one that revealed just how thoughtful and intentional he had been while planning the moment.
The hugs, the tears, the laughter, and the first quiet words exchanged as fiancés are always my favorite photographs. Once the excitement settled, I walked over and introduced myself. At 6'2", I'm usually the tallest person at a proposal, but standing next to a professional basketball player quickly humbled me. I joked that he had stolen my title for the afternoon, and thankfully, he laughed.
Kathleen smiles as she listens to the story behind the ring during a candid post-proposal portrait session.
I also had the chance to meet Kathleen properly, and one detail immediately caught my eye: her engagement ring. She had helped design it herself, combining two distinct diamond cuts into a striking, custom piece unlike anything I had photographed before. As a photographer, I love unique details because they tell a deeper story about the couple, and this ring felt like an extension of her own personality.
The ocean breeze was picking up, so I gave the couple a quick rundown of my game plan. I positioned Kathleen primarily on the left side of the picnic setup, using the direction of the wind to keep her long, dark curls flowing naturally away from her face. It's a small adjustment that many people never think about, but details like wind, light, and body positioning can make the difference between a good portrait and an unforgettable one.

Kathleen, a model herself, arrived camera-ready. She enthusiastically told me about her favorite side before I even had to ask—a conversation I normally have with every couple. Combined with Zeb's calm demeanor, it created the perfect dynamic for natural, effortless portraits.
One of my favorite techniques during every Puerto Rico surprise proposal photography session is encouraging the newly engaged couple to sit down together and simply talk. I asked Zeb to spend the next few minutes telling Kathleen the story behind the ring: how long he had been planning, where he had hidden it, and everything that had gone into creating the surprise. That simple prompt always leads to the most authentic moments. While one partner shares the story, the other listens, smiles, laughs, and relives the excitement all over again.

Those first five minutes after the proposal often produce the strongest images of the entire session because the emotions are still completely unfiltered.
Once they had a chance to settle in, we left the picnic setup behind and wandered toward the shoreline. We created relaxed portraits against the palms and the Atlantic Ocean, focusing on their connection and highlighting Kathleen's beautifully designed ring. There was no pressure, no rigid posing, and no rush to finish. The evening unfolded naturally, and that's exactly how I wanted to document it.

As a Puerto Rico proposal photographer, I've learned that the best images come from giving couples room to simply exist together. Whether I'm photographing a local couple, a destination proposal, or a high-profile athlete celebrating one of the biggest moments of his life, my approach remains the same: create space for genuine emotion and let the story tell itself.
Escambrón Beach may be one of Puerto Rico's most iconic proposal locations, but no two stories are ever alike. On this particular evening, beneath hazy Caribbean skies and surrounded by white roses, champagne, and the sound of the waves, Zeb and Kathleen began a new chapter together. And I was honored to be there to preserve it.

If you're planning a marriage proposal in Puerto Rico and want timeless, documentary-inspired imagery that feels authentic rather than staged, I'd love to help you tell your story.
A Luxury Puerto Rico Proposal at Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Río Mar | Anderson & Kelly
After years of long distance, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment, Anderson planned the perfect surprise proposal for Kelly at Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico. Read their inspiring love story and see how a dream destination engagement came to life with the help of The Heart Bandits and a luxury Puerto Rico proposal photographer.
The backdrop for what would be an amazing afternoon.
There are some love stories that unfold quickly, and then there are the ones that grow slowly, intentionally, and deeply over time. Anderson and Kelly’s relationship beautifully falls into the latter.
The two first met through a church fellowship while attending the University of California, Berkeley. Although they frequently crossed paths during those early years, their connection did not fully begin until much later when simple conversations gradually evolved into something far more meaningful. What began as friendship quickly transformed into long talks, effortless laughter, shared faith, and a relationship built on genuine emotional connection.
The most important ‘yes’ of Anderson’s life.
As their bond grew stronger, Anderson realized he could not leave for a mission trip to the Dominican Republic without first telling Kelly how he truly felt. Before boarding that flight, he took a leap of faith and confessed his feelings, asking her out before leaving the country. Even with the distance between them, their relationship only deepened throughout the trip, grounded in trust, intentionality, and the strong friendship they had already built together.
Soon after, life would test their relationship in even greater ways. Anderson relocated to Chicago to begin his career at AbbVie, while Kelly remained in Berkeley to complete her final semester at UC Berkeley. Long distance can often expose the weaknesses in a relationship, but for Anderson and Kelly, it only revealed the depth of their commitment to one another. Month after month, Anderson made it a priority to fly back to California just to spend time with Kelly, proving that love is often found in consistency, sacrifice, and showing up for the person who matters most.
Couldn’t have asked for a better Golden Hour sunset in Puerto Rico.
That perspective on love was deeply influenced by Anderson’s father, whose own example left a lasting impression on him. Despite building and growing his company, Anderson’s father always prioritized returning home to his family regularly. Watching that level of commitment taught Anderson that real love is not simply spoken — it is demonstrated through effort, presence, and intentional action.
After graduating from Berkeley, Kelly moved across the country once again to pursue her master’s degree at Columbia Teachers College in New York City. Even with thousands of miles separating them, Anderson continued choosing her over and over again. Whether it meant quick weekend visits from Chicago to New York or longer holiday trips together, their relationship remained rooted in the same intentionality that had defined their love story from the very beginning.
Cheers to happiness, prosperity and love.
By October 2025, Anderson secretly began planning one of the most important moments of their lives: the proposal.
Wanting every detail to feel deeply personal and unforgettable, he partnered with luxury proposal planning company The Heart Bandits alongside the incredible team at Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico to bring his vision to life. Together, they curated a romantic destination proposal experience that reflected not only their relationship, but the future they were preparing to step into together.
For Anderson, Puerto Rico felt like the perfect place to ask Kelly to marry him. Kelly had always felt connected to Latin American and Spanish culture after spending part of her younger years studying in Spain, and Anderson wanted the proposal destination to reflect something she genuinely loved — the warmth, romance, beauty, and soul of that culture. At the same time, Puerto Rico represented something meaningful to him as well. Visiting the Caribbean together had always been a dream of his, making the island the perfect intersection between both of their stories.
The first of many warm kisses as an engaged couple.
Set against the breathtaking scenery of Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Río Mar, their Puerto Rico proposal became more than just a surprise engagement. It became the beginning of a new chapter rooted in faith, intentionality, sacrifice, and a love that continued choosing each other through every season of life.
As a Puerto Rico proposal photographer, getting the opportunity to document stories like Anderson and Kelly’s is always incredibly meaningful. Their relationship serves as a reminder that the strongest love stories are often built not through grand gestures alone, but through consistency, devotion, and the quiet decision to continue showing up for one another every single day.
Put your hand in mine and let’s make history…together.
James & Elly's Luxury Surprise Proposal at Royal Isabela | Puerto Rico Proposal Photographer
After eight years together, James surprised Elly with a breathtaking marriage proposal at Royal Isabela in Puerto Rico. Surrounded by hundreds of roses, oceanfront views, and golden-hour light, their unforgettable engagement became one of my favorite proposal photography experiences to date.
My first opportunity to use MagMod creative gels resulted in some of my favorite portraits of the year.
There are some proposal days that feel more like work, and there are others that remind me exactly why I became a photographer in the first place.
May 30th was one of those days.
When James first reached out to me about photographing his surprise marriage proposal to his girlfriend, Elly, I knew we were putting together something special. The couple had been together for eight years after first meeting in high school, and they were planning their very first trip to Puerto Rico together. What Elly didn't know was that the weekend getaway would culminate in one of the most important moments of their lives.
The chosen location was Royal Isabela, one of Puerto Rico's most breathtaking luxury destinations and, coincidentally, a venue I had never photographed before.
The drive from my side of the island takes approximately one hour and forty-five minutes, so when Dani from I Do Proposal accepted my offer to carpool, I was thrilled to have some company for the journey. Long drives tend to pass much faster when you're discussing photography, weddings, proposals, and life in general.
By the time we arrived in Isabela, we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day.
A pathway of roses, candles, and ocean views set the stage for an unforgettable surprise proposal.
Being the end of May, the Puerto Rico heat was certainly making its presence known, but the weather itself was nearly perfect.
Upon arrival, Joan, Royal Isabela's Marketing Manager, warmly welcomed us and arranged for a golf cart to pick us up from the parking area and bring us to the main entrance. It was our first opportunity to finally shake hands after previously communicating from afar.
Shortly thereafter, William, one of the venue's on-site assistants, gave us a tour of the property before escorting us to the proposal location.
The moment I saw Royal Isabela for the first time, I understood immediately why it has become one of Puerto Rico's most sought-after luxury wedding and proposal venues.
Every turn seemed to reveal another stunning view. The property blends dramatic coastal cliffs, lush tropical greenery, manicured golf course landscapes, and panoramic ocean vistas in a way that feels almost cinematic.
As we made our way toward the proposal location, Joan explained that surprise marriage proposals are often hosted on the golf course itself, specifically near Hole 17.
One of my favorite intimate portraits from immediately after the proposal.
The reason quickly became obvious.
Perched high above the coastline, the location offers uninterrupted views of Isabela's rugged shoreline and the Atlantic Ocean below. The setting feels secluded, intimate, and incredibly romantic.
The proposal décor designed by Dani sat beautifully within the landscape. Hundreds of red roses lined the pathway while candles and champagne completed the luxury experience James had envisioned for Elly.
As Dani began setting up the décor, I immediately started scouting angles and compositions.
One particular feature caught my attention.
Behind me was an opening in the surrounding vegetation that framed the distant coastline almost perfectly. As I studied it, Joan laughed and explained that the opening was intentionally created. It hadn't existed originally, but was later designed to provide a more aesthetically pleasing view of the cliffs and ocean beyond.
Emotional reaction from bride-to-be moments after accepting a marriage proposal in Puerto Rico.
The photographer in me immediately began imagining possibilities.
It would later become one of my favorite framing devices of the entire session.
By 6:00 PM, it was officially time.
William soon arrived escorting James and Elly toward the proposal site.
Elly wore a beautiful colorful dress that complemented both the setting and the floral design perfectly. Meanwhile, I quietly moved into position.
The challenge?
My ideal vantage point required me to remain crouched behind a small hill for much of the proposal itself.
The discomfort was worth it.
James wasted absolutely no time.
Before nerves could fully settle in, he dropped to one knee and presented the ring.
Champagne, celebration, and the beginning of a brand-new chapter together.
Even though the proposal unfolded quickly, I managed to capture a wide variety of images before, during, and after the moment itself. Landscape compositions showcased the grandeur of Royal Isabela while tighter portraits documented every emotion unfolding between them.
As expected, James received the answer he had been waiting eight years to hear.
Yes.
The relief, excitement, and overwhelming happiness were immediately visible on both of their faces.
Once the initial emotions settled, I finally emerged from hiding and introduced myself properly.
I shook James' hand for the first time and congratulated him.
Then I met Elly.
Like many newly engaged brides, she was simultaneously overjoyed and overwhelmed. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she tried to process everything that had just happened.
Eight years after meeting in high school, James finally got down on one knee.
It is precisely these moments that I love documenting most.
The proposal itself is important, but what happens immediately afterward often becomes even more meaningful. The excitement is still fresh. The emotions are completely authentic. The reality of what just happened has barely begun to settle in.
That is why I transitioned immediately into my signature intimate portrait work.
The wind, however, had other plans.
Although the weather was beautiful, the coastal breeze spent much of the session enthusiastically rearranging Elly's hair. While some of it created movement and atmosphere, a considerable amount would eventually require careful attention during post-production.
Still, the emotion far outweighed any technical inconvenience.
With an entire golf course available to us, I began expanding the visual storytelling.
The dramatic coastline of Isabela provided the perfect backdrop for their engagement.
I stepped back to create environmental portraits that showcased the scale of Royal Isabela's remarkable landscape.
I framed the couple between trees.
I used nearby golf tees as foreground elements.
I photographed them through branches and natural openings.
I even incorporated a nearby tree stump to add additional depth and visual interest.
Everywhere I looked seemed to offer another creative opportunity.
As the sun gradually descended toward the horizon, I shifted gears and began preparing for one of the parts of the session I had been anticipating most.
Flash photography.
Elly's reaction said everything before she even spoke the word "yes."
Earlier that week I had received a new set of creative gels from MagMod, and this would be my first opportunity to truly experiment with them in the field.
The magnetic system allowed me to quickly attach colored gels to my speedlights, opening up an entirely new world of creative possibilities.
I explained the process to James and Elly as we worked, giving them a brief crash course in flash photography while simultaneously posing and directing them through a series of portraits.
The results exceeded my expectations.
By deliberately reducing ambient exposure and introducing carefully controlled artificial light, we were able to create dramatic imagery that felt cinematic, romantic, and unique to their experience.
The glowing trees, dramatic skies, and vibrant color combinations transformed an already beautiful location into something almost surreal.
Elly with James moments after asking the biggest question of his life at Royal Isabela.
Some of my favorite photographs from the entire session were created during those final minutes of fading daylight.
As darkness continued to settle across the golf course, Joan pointed toward the horizon.
The moon had begun making a spectacular appearance.
Recognizing one final opportunity, I positioned James and Elly facing one another while maintaining a small gap between them. The composition allowed their silhouettes to frame the moon while preserving the intimacy of the moment.
It became the perfect final image.
With that final frame captured, I packed my gear, congratulated the newly engaged couple one last time, and wished them a lifetime of happiness together.
She said ‘yes’ at Royal Isabela.
My first experience photographing at Royal Isabela exceeded every expectation.
Between the incredible staff, the breathtaking scenery, the thoughtful planning from I Do Proposal and the genuine love shared between James and Elly, the day felt effortless from beginning to end.
If you're considering a surprise proposal in Puerto Rico, it's difficult to imagine a more spectacular setting than Royal Isabela.
And if this experience was any indication, I sincerely hope it won't be my last time photographing there.
Congratulations, James and Elly.
Thank you for allowing me to tell your story.
David & Vanessa’s Romantic Escambrón Beach Proposal | Puerto Rico Proposal Photographer
David and Vanessa’s love story began in the fourth grade and, thirteen years later, led to an intimate sunset proposal at Escambrón Beach in Puerto Rico. Discover how this emotional engagement unfolded through candid storytelling, heartfelt moments and cinematic portraiture in San Juan.
Thirteen years later…and forever officially begins.
There’s something profoundly beautiful about photographing a couple whose love story began long before adulthood ever entered the picture. In an era where relationships can sometimes feel fleeting, David and Vanessa reminded me what commitment truly looks like. Their story started in the fourth grade. Not high school. Not college. Fourth grade. When David initially told me they had known each other since “school,” I admittedly assumed he meant university. Instead, they had quite literally grown up together. Over the course of thirteen years, they built a relationship rooted in familiarity, loyalty, patience and deep emotional connection. Naturally, when the time finally came to propose, David wanted every detail to feel intentional and authentic to who they are as a couple.
David first contacted me from a Washington state phone number with a 360 area code, though he explained they are currently living in Oregon. Originally from Mexico, David shared that Vanessa is also Mexican, though she was born in the United States. Like many destination clients who travel to Puerto Rico for meaningful life moments, he wanted guidance from someone local who understood not only photography but the emotional rhythm of a successful surprise proposal. More importantly, he emphasized one thing repeatedly: Vanessa preferred intimacy over spectacle. She wasn’t looking for a public performance or an overproduced setup. She wanted something private, heartfelt and emotionally genuine.
The easiest “yes” after thirteen beautiful years together.
Without hesitation, I recommended Escambrón Beach. Over the years, it has become one of my favorite locations for marriage proposals in Puerto Rico because it offers everything necessary for a cinematic yet intimate experience. There’s a wide stretch of grass perfect for movement and candid interaction. The rocky shoreline creates visual depth and texture. Waves crash dramatically against the stones while the skyline of San Juan slowly begins glowing as sunset approaches. Most importantly, Escambrón has enough versatility to provide privacy while still delivering breathtaking scenery.
David trusted my vision immediately and we began planning the logistics together. Prior to proposal day, I sent him a detailed video showing exactly where I wanted him to position himself for the proposal. Specifically, there’s a large green bush near the grassy section that acts as a subtle visual anchor in photographs while also helping me anticipate movement and framing. I always encourage proposers to remain discreet with their phones throughout the experience because excessive texting or visibly checking messages can quickly make a partner suspicious. To David’s credit, he handled everything flawlessly. After receiving my instructions, all I got back was a simple thumbs-up emoji. Efficient. Calm. Under control.
Capturing unscripted love stories is why I do this.
On the evening of the proposal, I arrived early carrying nothing more than a beach lawn chair and my camera gear. I quietly positioned myself near the area where everything would unfold and waited patiently as golden hour slowly began painting the landscape with warm light. Around 6 p.m., I spotted David and Vanessa making their way up from the rocky terrain near the parking area toward the grass. At one point, David briefly glanced in my direction without Vanessa noticing, silently acknowledging that our carefully orchestrated plan was now in motion.
I noticed David carrying a gray blanket, which I assumed they planned on using while relaxing by the water. Immediately, I began photographing the smaller in-between moments that many people overlook but that I personally believe are essential to storytelling. I photographed them laying down the blanket, slipping off their shoes and settling into the environment together. Those seemingly ordinary interactions matter tremendously because they establish emotional context. They show the anticipation before the proposal itself. They show comfort. Familiarity. Ease. These are the images that transform a proposal gallery into a narrative rather than just a sequence of isolated moments.
Escambrón Beach delivered magic once again.
As the sun began descending lower into the horizon, David slowly guided Vanessa toward the exact location we had discussed beforehand. Judging by Vanessa’s body language, she sensed what was about to happen. Honestly, after thirteen years together, I think part of her heart already knew this moment had been coming for a long time. Later, she jokingly mentioned that their relationship had already lasted longer than some marriages, which made everyone laugh. Yet beneath the humor was a truth that made the proposal even more meaningful: this wasn’t impulsive love. This was enduring love.
Then came the moment itself.
David got down on one knee as waves crashed softly in the background and the Puerto Rico sunset wrapped the entire scene in warmth. Vanessa’s reaction was immediate and emotional. After her enthusiastic “yes,” she practically melted into his arms in disbelief. She couldn’t stop staring at the ring and, at one point, bounced around with the kind of pure excitement usually reserved for childhood joy. It was wholesome in the truest sense of the word.
From classmates to soulmates.
This is precisely why I love photographing marriage proposals so much. They are perhaps the single most unscripted romantic moment in a couple’s life. Weddings, while beautiful, often follow structured timelines and carefully curated schedules. Proposals are different. They exist in real time. Emotions spill out naturally. There are no rehearsals. No second takes. Just raw human connection unfolding organically in front of the camera.
Once the emotions settled slightly, I finally walked over and officially introduced myself to David in person for the first time. That’s actually fairly common in my line of work because most of my proposal clients are destination couples visiting Puerto Rico from all over the world. Vanessa was still glowing with excitement and could barely contain herself, which made it the perfect time to transition into what I call “intimate portraiture.”
Intimate proposals will always have my heart.
I strongly believe the portraits taken immediately after a proposal are often the most emotionally authentic photographs of the entire session. The emotions are still fresh in their faces. Their body language remains naturally affectionate and unguarded. During this portion of the shoot, I frequently use the short lighting technique, positioning myself opposite the primary light source so the shadow side of the face becomes more prominent. In this case, the setting sun acted as my natural light source and beautifully sculpted their features while maintaining softness and dimensionality.
Before arriving at the session, I had actually spent some time browsing Pinterest for inspiration because I instinctively felt David and Vanessa were going to photograph beautifully together. Thankfully, they fully embraced the creative process. Throughout the portrait session, I occasionally showed them the back of my camera so they could better understand the mood, prompts and poses I envisioned for them. They were incredibly receptive and collaborative, which allowed us to create images that felt both editorial and emotionally grounded at the same time.
Capturing unscripted love stories is why I do this.
As if the evening couldn’t get any better, Puerto Rico delivered one of the most spectacular sunsets I’ve seen in quite some time. The sky exploded with color and instantly transformed the atmosphere around us. Knowing we had limited time left with ideal conditions, I quickly pulled out my flashes and began experimenting creatively with the remaining light. Combining artificial lighting with the vibrant sunset tones allowed me to create dramatic imagery that still maintained the warmth and intimacy of the moment.
By the end of the session, I genuinely felt connected to both David and Vanessa. That’s another aspect of proposal photography that I deeply value. It’s not just about taking photographs. It’s about learning who people are. Understanding their journey. Observing their personalities and dynamic together. In many ways, proposals become an accelerated emotional introduction between photographer and couple.
Puerto Rico sunsets and a lifetime ahead together.
As a fun side note, I also discovered they’re both huge Seattle Seahawks fans. Naturally, I jokingly told them that this now gives me yet another reason to hopefully photograph their wedding someday because I certainly wouldn’t mind visiting the Pacific Northwest again.
The way she looked at him after saying yes says everything.
Congratulations to David and Vanessa on their engagement and on thirteen years of building a love story rooted in loyalty, friendship and patience. It was an absolute honor documenting such a meaningful chapter of their lives here in Puerto Rico.
Some love stories start in college. Theirs started in the fourth grade.
Icacos Island Proposal in Puerto Rico | Luxury Boat Engagement from Fajardo
A breathtaking surprise proposal at Icacos Island, Puerto Rico—planned on a boat from Fajardo and captured in golden hour perfection.
Romantic portraits on the beaches of Icacos.
Janee, a young woman from Los Angeles, California, reached out to me with a very specific mission. Her close friend Edward was planning to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Lupita, and Puerto Rico was the destination.
We jumped on a call to talk through the vision, and right away I knew this was going to be something special. They were considering a boat ride from Fajardo to Icacos Island—a remote, stunning cay off Puerto Rico’s east coast. The plan was simple but beautiful: snorkel, relax, and then find the perfect sandbar moment for Edward to get down on one knee.
I was all in.
The moments before the proposal are just as important.
They booked their experience with Snorkeling Puerto Rico, a charter company known for turning a boat ride into a full-on vibe—music, drinks, food, and a crew that keeps the energy up the entire way.
Fast forward to proposal day.
I arrived in Fajardo about 45 minutes early and checked in with Edward, only to find out they had hit unexpected traffic. No problem. I connected with the boat company, explained who I was and what I was there to do, and they coordinated everything with the crew. Our boat for the day was called The Kraken, led by Ricardo, with Elly, Georgie, and the rest of the team helping out.
The exact moment he got down on one knee.
To stay lowkey, I picked a seat near the bathrooms—out of the way, minimal attention. Ironically, Lupita ended up sitting right next to me. Thankfully, she stayed busy chatting with friends the entire ride, because I definitely didn’t have a backup story ready if she started asking questions.
Edward and I kept in touch by text throughout the ride. Once we reached Icacos, the plan kicked into motion.
At around 4:30 p.m., I got off the boat ahead of everyone else to scout the perfect proposal spot. I came across an old, narrow pier, but it felt too risky and impractical. As I moved further down the beach, I found it—a semi-secluded stretch of sand near where jet skis were dropping people off. It had just enough privacy, and more importantly, the sun would fall perfectly behind them.
To the victor goes the spoils!
That was the spot.
With the little signal we had left, I texted Edward: I drew a big “X” in the sand so he’d know exactly where to go. He reacted with a thumbs-up, and we locked in 5:00 p.m. as go-time.
I got into position first, playing the role of a casual landscape photographer—hiding in plain sight. Only their friends knew who I was, so everything stayed under control.
Then I saw them walking toward me.
She said yes—pure joy on the shoreline.
Camera up, settings dialed in, light shifting between sun and clouds… and then a funny moment—Edward suddenly turns around mid-walk. He had forgotten the ring with his friend Chris. Nerves will do that.
Once he got it, he walked Lupita over to the “X,” took her hands, looked her in the eyes, and said everything he needed to say. A few seconds later, he was down on one knee, opening the box to the ring she’d been waiting for.
She said yes.
A just-engaged glow in golden hour light.
Immediately, their friends rushed in, celebrating like their team had just won a championship. I captured it all—the raw reactions, the hugs, the chaos in the best way possible.
Afterward, I grabbed some group photos, a few shots with friends, and then pulled the couple aside for a dedicated session. For the next 45 minutes, we created some really powerful images. Chris stepped in as my assistant, helping me boom my flash so I could balance the natural light with a more dramatic, editorial feel.
By 6:00 p.m., we were back on The Kraken heading toward shore.
Ending the day with unforgettable memories at sea.
Once we docked, I congratulated Edward and Lupita, said my goodbyes, and made my way home.
Huge shoutout to Snorkeling Puerto Rico for helping me blend in seamlessly and making the entire experience feel effortless. If you’re thinking about proposing in Icacos Island, this is easily one of the best ways to do it.
A kiss to seal the deal.
A Surprise Beach Proposal in Puerto Rico | Ramón & Brit’s Romantic Engagement
Ramón and Brit’s love story began long before they even realized it. After attending the same high school years ago, their paths eventually crossed again in the most meaningful way. Ramón chose the beautiful beaches of Puerto Rico to ask the most important question of his life, creating a breathtaking surprise proposal filled with emotion, romance, and unforgettable memories.
There are moments in life that remind us how beautifully unpredictable love can be.
Ramón and Brit’s story is one of those moments.
The two actually went to the same high school. They knew of each other back then, passing through the same hallways and existing within the same circles of familiarity. Yet their lives never truly intersected in a meaningful way. They were simply two people who were aware of each other… nothing more.
Or so they thought.
The moment Ramón drops to one knee during this surprise beach proposal.
Years later, life would reveal something remarkable. Ramón and Brit eventually discovered that they had been closer to each other’s story than they ever realized. Their paths had quietly crossed long before the right moment arrived.
Sometimes love works like that. Two people can be right under each other’s noses without realizing that the person meant for them has been there all along.
When Ramón decided it was time to ask one of the most important questions of his life, he knew he wanted the moment to be unforgettable. He also knew the setting needed to match the magnitude of the moment.
Puerto Rico was the perfect choice.
A newly engaged couple celebrating their love in Puerto Rico.
With its warm Caribbean breeze, golden sand, and breathtaking ocean views, the island provides one of the most romantic backdrops in the world for a marriage proposal. For couples traveling from the mainland United States, Puerto Rico offers the magic of a tropical destination without the need for a passport.
Ramón partnered with the incredible team at I Do Proposal, a Puerto Rico-based proposal planning company known for creating beautifully designed surprise engagements. Together, they orchestrated a thoughtful setup on the beach that would set the stage for a moment Brit would never forget.
From elegant decorations to carefully planned timing, every detail was designed to make the experience feel intimate, emotional, and effortless.
That’s where I came in.
Golden light and ocean views create the perfect proposal backdrop.
As a Puerto Rico proposal photographer, my role was to quietly document the moment as it unfolded in real time. Proposals are one of the most exciting forms of storytelling in photography because they are completely unscripted. There is no rehearsal. No second take. Only a genuine moment filled with anticipation, nerves, excitement, and overwhelming emotion.
When Ramón finally dropped to one knee, the ocean behind him and the sand beneath his feet, Brit’s reaction said everything.
The surprise, the joy, the laughter, and the tears were all there.
Moments like these are why I love documenting proposals and elopements in Puerto Rico. There is something incredibly powerful about preserving the exact second two lives officially change forever.
In the end, Ramón and Brit left the island with more than just beautiful photographs. They left with the beginning of a brand new chapter in their story.

Why More Photographers Should Be Shooting Marriage Proposals
Marriage proposal photography is emerging as a powerful niche within the wedding industry. From shorter, lower-stress sessions to creative freedom and future wedding bookings, photographers who embrace proposal coverage can strengthen their brand while capturing some of life’s most emotional milestones.

Marriage proposal photography has quietly become one of the most rewarding niches in the wedding and portrait industry. While weddings and elopements understandably dominate most photographers’ portfolios, proposals offer something uniquely powerful: raw emotion, manageable logistics, and an incredible opportunity to build lasting client relationships. As more couples seek meaningful, well-documented proposal experiences, photographers who embrace this specialty can position themselves strategically in a growing and highly profitable segment of the market.
Shorter Sessions With High Emotional Impact

One of the biggest advantages of proposal photography is its efficient time commitment. Unlike weddings or even elopements, most proposal sessions typically last no longer than an hour to an hour and a half. The actual proposal moment usually unfolds within the first fifteen minutes, followed by a relaxed engagement-style portrait session that captures the couple’s excitement immediately afterward. This condensed format allows photographers to create impactful work without the physical and logistical demands associated with full wedding coverage, while still delivering emotionally rich imagery clients deeply value.
A Simpler, Lower-Stress Production

Although the emotional anticipation of a proposal can feel intense, the overall production is remarkably straightforward compared to weddings. There are rarely complex timelines, multiple vendors, or extended family dynamics to coordinate. Most proposal shoots involve just the couple and the photographer, sometimes alongside a planner if the setup is elaborate. This simplicity creates a more relaxed shooting environment that allows photographers to focus on storytelling rather than logistics, often resulting in more natural and authentic imagery.
Creative Freedom You Rarely Get at Weddings
The exact second a proposal turns into an engagement session, a perfect example of how photographers can maximize creative freedom during proposal shoots.
Proposal photography offers a level of creative flexibility that many photographers find refreshing. Wedding day couple sessions are often limited to tight schedules, whereas proposals typically allow ample time to experiment with lighting, locations, prompts, and stylistic approaches. Photographers can lean into candid storytelling, try new flash techniques, incorporate scenic backdrops, or explore fresh posing ideas without the pressure of an event timeline. This creative freedom often leads to stronger portfolio material and renewed artistic inspiration.
A Natural Gateway to Future Wedding Clients

Photographing a proposal places you at the very beginning of a couple’s wedding journey. By the time the gallery is delivered, you have already established rapport, demonstrated your working style, and created a meaningful shared experience with the couple. This early connection frequently opens the door to wedding photography discussions later on. Even when couples do not immediately book their wedding photographer, the trust built during a proposal session often keeps you at the top of their consideration list when planning begins.
Strengthening Your Brand and Online Visibility

Consistently documenting marriage proposals can significantly elevate a photographer’s brand authority. Proposal imagery performs exceptionally well on social media and search engines because it captures genuine, emotionally charged moments that resonate widely with viewers. These sessions naturally produce compelling blog content, location-based SEO opportunities, and shareable storytelling that helps photographers stand out in a crowded wedding market. Over time, specializing in proposals can position you as an expert in capturing authentic milestone moments, attracting both engaged couples and planners seeking reliable collaborators.
The Growing Opportunity in Proposal Photography
Destination engagement photography continues to grow in popularity as couples invest in documenting their proposal story professionally.
As couples increasingly value personalized experiences, professional proposal photography is no longer considered a luxury add-on but an integral part of the engagement story. Photographers who embrace this niche benefit from efficient shoots, strong portfolio content, repeat client potential, and enhanced brand recognition. In an industry where differentiation matters more than ever, marriage proposal photography offers a meaningful and strategically sound path forward for professionals looking to expand both creatively and commercially.
A Cruise Stop, A Sunrise Proposal, and a Love That Found Its Moment in Puerto Rico
Amar and Jayah’s love story found its turning point during a brief cruise stop in Puerto Rico. With a sunrise proposal, a luxury picnic, and a heartfelt yes, their engagement became a reminder that love doesn’t wait for perfect timing — it creates it.
When love finds its moment in the middle of a journey.
Some love stories don’t wait for perfect timing.
They create it.
Amar and Jayah’s proposal story is proof of that.
They met three years ago through a mutual friend — one of those quiet introductions that eventually becomes everything. Fast forward to this past Saturday: they were aboard a cruise departing from Miami, with Puerto Rico as a brief but meaningful stop before continuing on to St. Lucia. Amar knew he didn’t want this to be just another stop on the itinerary. He wanted it to be the moment that changed their lives.
A sunrise decision that changed everything.
With only a few hours on the island, Amar reached out to I Do Proposal, trusting their team to bring a dream to life in record time. And let me tell you — they delivered.
As a Puerto Rico wedding photographer, I’ve documented hundreds of proposals, but there’s something incredibly special about these intimate moments that exist between the bigger wedding days. Proposals remind me why I fell in love with storytelling in the first place.
A Morning That Mattered
Proof that timing doesn’t need to be perfect to be magical.
Because of the cruise schedule, we planned a 10 a.m. kickoff. Amar wanted more than just the proposal — he wanted time to walk through the city with Jayah afterward, to actually live inside the moment before returning to the ship by 3 p.m.
The location?
A stunning stretch of Isla Verde beach, just beyond Condado — one of Puerto Rico’s most iconic proposal backdrops.
I arrived around 9:15 a.m. to find Katherinne, the owner of I Do Proposal, already deep into setup with her right-hand powerhouse, Claudia. That’s when I realized…this wasn’t just any picnic.
Love, light, and a yes that echoed forever.
This was a full table-and-chair luxury setup — elegant, intentional, and honestly something I hadn’t photographed before. Katherinne smiled and told me it had been waiting in storage for the right moment.
Turns out, the right moment had arrived.
The Green Light
When the world pauses and two hearts decide.
As we documented the setup, Amar stayed in constant contact through our private client chat. He was nearby, watching, waiting, ready. All he needed was the green light to cross the street.
And when we gave it?
Game on.
Amar walked in holding Jayah’s hand. Her expression shifted instantly — that beautiful mix of confusion, curiosity, and anticipation. And then he dropped to one knee.
The beginning of their forever.
No matter how many times I witness it, that moment never loses its magic. Ever.
She said yes.
Always yes.
Why I Love Proposals
A moment that needed no audience to feel monumental.
After capturing that iconic image, I introduced myself and we moved into their engagement session beneath tall palm trees offering the kind of shade only Puerto Rico knows how to provide. Winter here isn’t cold — it’s simply kinder.
They laughed. They relaxed. They soaked it in.
For most of the session, Amar and Jayah enjoyed their luxurious picnic — sipping champagne, sharing chocolate-covered strawberries, and FaceTiming loved ones to spread the news. And honestly? That’s exactly how a proposal should feel. Unrushed. Present. Real.
Where intention met emotion.
As one of the many wedding photographers in Puerto Rico, I get to document grand celebrations with hundreds of guests. But proposals like this? They’re the quiet heartbeats behind every wedding story.
They remind me that love doesn’t need a crowd to be powerful.
The Beauty of Saying Yes in Puerto Rico
A love story written between destinations.
Puerto Rico isn’t just a destination — it’s a feeling. It’s warmth, texture, light, and rhythm. It’s where emotions land differently. Where love feels louder. Where memories imprint deeper.
Whether I’m photographing an intimate proposal or a full-scale wedding, my goal as a Puerto Rico wedding photographer is always the same: to preserve the emotion exactly as it was felt.
Amar and Jayah didn’t just get engaged in Puerto Rico.
They created a chapter that will live in their story forever.
And I had the honor of standing right there when it began.
