Jewish Wedding in Puerto Rico: Gabriella & Michael’s Luxury Destination Celebration

Gabriella and Michael’s story began the way many unforgettable love stories do—unexpectedly, at a house party just over four years ago. At the time, Gabriella found herself in a relationship that no longer served her, and in contrast, Michael represented something entirely different: ease, connection, and clarity. After her breakup, what followed felt almost inevitable. These two quickly became inseparable, building a relationship rooted in intention and undeniable chemistry.

    When it came time to plan their wedding, they reached out to one of Puerto Rico’s most trusted planners, Hayxanair of Nayas Events. Our history goes back years, long before weddings, to our FEMA co-working days. That foundation of trust made it easy for her to connect us, knowing we would align creatively and professionally.

Custom-made perfection

    Our first virtual meeting set the tone immediately. It felt less like a consultation and more like a conversation between friends. We laughed, exchanged ideas, and quickly honed in on their vision. By the time Michael briefly joined fresh from the gym, it was already clear: we were a perfect fit. Soon after, they officially booked and began planning their trip to Puerto Rico.

    Before the wedding day, we met in Old San Juan for their “love story” session—a pre-wedding shoot designed to build comfort, establish rhythm, and create imagery for invitations and wedding stationery. Old San Juan, with its timeless architecture and vibrant textures, served as the perfect backdrop. Despite overcast skies and the constant threat of rain, we adapted in real time. When the weather finally caught up to us, we transitioned to the Condado Palm Hotel, using its lobby to craft intimate, editorial-style portraits that elevated the entire session. What could have been a setback became an opportunity to create something uniquely refined.

The first look is everything.

    By the time March 22nd arrived, everything was in place for a wedding that would be as culturally rich as it was emotionally powerful. I arrived early—as I always do—ready to document every layer of the day. Gabriella’s suite was filled with energy, anticipation, and laughter as she prepared alongside her closest friends and family. Meanwhile, Michael embraced a relaxed yet intentional aesthetic with a tan suit that perfectly complemented the destination setting.

    This wedding carried special significance as one of the most complete Jewish celebrations I’ve had the privilege to document. The day began with the Ketubah signing, a deeply meaningful Jewish tradition where the groom was made aware of their marriage contract, outlining their commitments to one another. It is both symbolic and legal, witnessed by loved ones, and sets the spiritual foundation for the marriage.

Love under the Chuppah.

    From a production standpoint, this was an all-hands-on-deck effort. With a full team of photographers and videographers connected through headsets, we operated with precision, ensuring every moment—both grand and subtle—was captured seamlessly.

    Despite persistent rain, the ceremony adapted beautifully to an atrium setting. Jewish weddings are known for their depth of tradition, and Gabriella and Michael’s ceremony embodied that fully. Under the chuppah, a symbolic canopy representing the home they would build together, they exchanged vows surrounded by those who mattered most. One of the most iconic moments followed: the breaking of the glass, where Michael stepped down firmly, signaling both the fragility of life and the enduring strength of their union. The room erupted in celebration, marking the official beginning of their marriage.

    Following the ceremony, we moved quickly into portraits before transitioning into the reception. And then came one of the most electrifying traditions of the night: the Horah.

    The Horah is a high-energy Jewish dance that brings everyone together in a circle of pure celebration. The couple is lifted into the air on chairs while family and friends dance around them, often holding hands or linking arms. It symbolizes community support, joy, and the collective lifting of the couple into their new life together. There is nothing subtle about it—it is loud, chaotic, emotional, and absolutely unforgettable. Photographing it requires instinct, timing, and a willingness to step into the movement rather than observe from a distance.

    As the night continued, heartfelt toasts flowed freely, creating an atmosphere that felt both intimate and spontaneous. At one point, it genuinely felt like an open mic session—each speech adding another layer to the story of Gabriella and Michael.

    The celebration evolved into pure joy: a packed dance floor, candid moments, photo booth laughter, and even Michael stepping behind the bar to serve drinks himself. Later in the evening, Gabriella changed into a second dress—sleeker and more dance-friendly—allowing her to fully immerse herself in the energy of the night without restriction.

    As the evening came to a close, there was a shared sense that something truly special had taken place. This wasn’t just a wedding—it was a complete experience. A seamless blend of culture, emotion, and celebration, executed alongside a team of vendors I deeply trust.

    Exhausted but fulfilled, I left knowing one thing for certain: this is exactly why I do what I do. And if given the chance, I would relive this entire day without hesitation.

One of the most unforgettable aspects of Indian weddings is the Baraat—the groom's entrance on a horse or an elaborately decorated vehicle, surrounded by family and friends dancing to upbeat music. During these weddings, I have captured moments of joy during the Mehendi ceremony, where the bride's hands and feet are adorned with intricate henna designs. The ceremony is usually followed by the Sangeet, a celebration of music and dance, where both families come together for an evening of fun. The actual wedding ceremony revolves around the sacred fire, where the couple takes seven vows for a happy married life. As a Puerto Rico wedding photographer, capturing the vivid colors of the bride's lehenga and the intricate rituals performed during the wedding has been an absolute delight. The ceremonial exchange of garlands, known as Jai Mala, symbolizes the acceptance of each other, and every glance between the couple tells a story of love and respect. These weddings often feature a seamless blend of religious customs and local traditions that reflect the country’s deep connection to its heritage. A major highlight is the incorporation of reggae music, which not only serves as background entertainment but is an essential part of the day’s joyful vibe. I've seen couples dance their way down the aisle, and there’s something truly enchanting about capturing these spontaneous, joyful moments. Jamaican weddings are also famous for their traditional dishes, like jerk chicken and fried plantains, which add a special flair to the reception. Many couples I’ve photographed have chosen to incorporate unity ceremonies, like sand blending, symbolizing their joining lives. It’s a beautiful metaphor for two distinct individuals becoming one while maintaining their unique qualities, which makes for some incredibly emotional photos. As the night progresses, the celebration usually turns into an electrifying dance party, complete with drums, laughter, and a lot of movement. The rhythm and energy of a Jamaican wedding create an atmosphere that makes every photo feel alive. One of the unique traditions I've enjoyed capturing is the "mičošana" ceremony, where the bride is symbolically transformed into a wife by exchanging her bridal veil for a matron’s headscarf. This beautiful ritual often happens at midnight and is filled with touching moments as the bride and groom transition into their new roles. Latvian weddings also feature a lot of singing—often in the form of traditional folk songs that are passed down from generation to generation. These songs bring an emotional connection between families and make for wonderful candid moments that are full of raw emotion. The "kazas māte" or "wedding mother" is another unique part of Latvian weddings. This is a woman, usually a close family member, who helps guide the bride through the day, offering support and advice. I love capturing this mentor-like bond in photographs, as it beautifully symbolizes familial love and care. A central part of Latvian weddings is also the involvement of guests in games and activities that bring out laughter and light-hearted competition. These games create opportunities for capturing candid, joyous expressions among family and friends. Latvian wedding receptions are known for their warmth, with an emphasis on bringing people together through food, storytelling, and dancing. Whether it’s the intimate exchange of vows or the heartfelt family toasts, the Latvian way of celebrating is something deeply touching and unforgettable.

One of the first things you notice at an Assyrian wedding is the symbolic entrance, where the groom and his family arrive at the bride's home, accompanied by music, drums, and jubilant dancing. It’s a significant moment that signifies the groom asking permission from the bride’s family, which I love to capture for its deep cultural meaning and the genuine expressions of love and unity. The bride’s dress is often richly adorned, and her entrance is always met with applause and admiration. One of the most interesting elements of an Assyrian wedding is the ceremonial blessing given by the priest, which emphasizes the spiritual union of the couple. The bride and groom are crowned during the ceremony, a tradition known as the "Crowning of the Couple," symbolizing their roles as king and queen of their new family. The reception is always filled with Assyrian music and "khigga" dancing, a traditional line dance that often involves everyone present. It’s a joyous moment that symbolizes the fragility of life and the commitment to stand by each other through all of life’s challenges. The reception is usually a festive gathering, with the "hora" dance being a significant highlight. During the hora, the bride and groom are lifted up on chairs while surrounded by their family and friends—an experience filled with laughter and unbridled joy. One beautiful moment that I always make a point to capture is the signing of the "ketubah," a marriage contract that outlines the groom's commitments to his bride. This document is as much a piece of art as it is a promise, often decorated beautifully, and it makes for wonderful photos. Jewish weddings also have a touching "bedeken" ceremony, where the groom veils the bride before the ceremony, symbolizing his love for her inner beauty. It is always an emotional moment that captures the essence of true love and commitment. The celebration continues with traditional blessings over wine, symbolic of joy and abundance.
