Janee, a young woman from Los Angeles, California, reached out to me with a very specific mission. Her close friend Edward was planning to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Lupita, and Puerto Rico was the destination.

We jumped on a call to talk through the vision, and right away I knew this was going to be something special. They were considering a boat ride from Fajardo to Icacos Island—a remote, stunning cay off Puerto Rico’s east coast. It had just enough privacy, and more importantly, the sun would fall perfectly behind them.

With the little signal we had left, I texted Edward: I drew a big “X” in the sand so he’d know exactly where to go. He reacted with a thumbs-up, and we locked in 5:00 p.m. as go-time.

I got into position first, playing the role of a casual landscape photographer—hiding in plain sight. Only their friends knew who I was, so everything stayed under control.

Then I saw them walking toward me.

By 6:00 p.m., we were back on The Kraken heading toward shore.

Once we docked, I congratulated Edward and Lupita, said my goodbyes, and made my way home.
