Christine & Joseph tied the knot at the gorgeous Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in Puerto Rico

Some love stories begin in childhood. Others unfold in college hallways, at first jobs, or through mutual friends who insist that two people simply have to meet. And then there are the love stories that arrive when you've almost stopped believing they are possible. The ones that find you after heartbreak, after disappointment, and after life has taken you down paths you never imagined. These are the stories that remind us that love doesn't follow a schedule, that happiness doesn't have an expiration date, and that sometimes, the most beautiful chapter of your life is the one you least expected to write.

On October 25, I had the pleasure of documenting Joseph and Christine's intimate elopement at the beautiful Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. At 63 and 58 years old, respectively, these two proved something that I wish more people would remember: it is never too late to fall in love, to take a leap of faith, or to begin again.

Their story isn't about two people who got everything right the first time. It's about two people who experienced heartbreak, endured the disappointment of marriages that didn't last, and eventually found themselves in a place where they could choose love again. It's about faith, timing, and the courage to open your heart when life has given you every reason to protect it.

And if you're reading this while wondering whether it's too late for you to find your person, I hope their story gives you a reason to believe otherwise.

When You Start to Believe Love Might Not Be in the Cards

Third time’s the charm for Christine and Joey at the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in Puerto Rico

Before Christine came into his life, Joseph, affectionately known as Joey, had already experienced two divorces. After going through the heartbreak of his second marriage ending, he had reached a point where he had given up on love and finding the right person.

It's a feeling many people can understand, regardless of their age or relationship history. After investing your heart in someone, building a life together, and watching things fall apart, the thought of starting over can feel exhausting. You begin to question whether the relationship you once dreamed of is something you'll ever experience again.

Perhaps you convince yourself that you've had your chance. Perhaps you decide that being alone is easier than risking another disappointment. Or perhaps you simply stop looking, not because you no longer believe in love, but because you're tired of searching for it.

Joey had reached that point. After dedicating 40 years of his life to working as a firefighter, he knew a thing or two about commitment, perseverance, and showing up when people needed him. But finding the right person to share his life with was another matter entirely.

Sometimes, the person who spends a lifetime helping others needs a little hope of his own.

For Joey, that hope took the form of faith. He sat in church and manifested the kind of love he wanted to find. Even when he had given up on actively searching for the right person, there was something meaningful about allowing himself to believe that his story might not be over.

And it wasn't.

Christine's Leap of Faith and the Courage to Start Again

First kiss as a married couple for Christine and Joey at the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in Puerto Rico

Christine had her own history of heartbreak. Having experienced two marriages that didn't work out, she understood the uncertainty that comes with starting over. She had also spent years as a stay-at-home mom, dedicating herself to her family and the responsibilities that came with that chapter of her life.

When a marriage ends, life can suddenly look very different from the future you once imagined. The plans you made together may no longer apply, and the identity you built around being a spouse can become something you need to rediscover. Starting over later in life can feel especially daunting because there is often an expectation that certain milestones should already be behind you.

But Christine chose to take a leap of faith. She moved to the beach, embraced a new chapter, and gave herself the opportunity to experience life differently.

There is something incredibly powerful about that decision. Sometimes, a fresh start doesn't begin with meeting someone new. Sometimes, it begins with choosing yourself, changing your surroundings, and giving yourself permission to imagine a different future.

Christine wasn't simply waiting for someone to come along and change her life. She was taking steps to create a life that felt right for her. And in doing so, she placed herself in a position to discover possibilities she might never have encountered otherwise.

One of those possibilities was Joey.

A Meeting, a Club, and a Facebook Friend Request

Joseph and Christine met at a meeting, setting the stage for a connection neither could have known would eventually lead to marriage. Their paths would cross again at a club they had both joined.

And that's where the story gets a little more relatable.

Joey wanted Christine's phone number. But instead of walking away empty-handed, he settled for getting her Facebook information.

It's a small detail, but one I love because it reminds us that the beginnings of extraordinary relationships are often wonderfully ordinary. There's no guarantee that a first encounter will turn into something meaningful. Sometimes, all you have is a little curiosity, a willingness to make a move, and the hope that the other person might be interested, too.

You don't always know when you're standing at the beginning of something that will change your life. You might simply be attending a meeting, joining a club, or accepting a friend request from someone who caught your attention.

For Joey and Christine, those seemingly simple moments became part of a much bigger story.

After everything they had experienced, they had found each other. Two people with their own histories, their own lessons, and their own reasons to approach love differently this time around.

Perhaps the beauty of finding love later in life is that you arrive at it with a greater understanding of who you are and what matters to you. You know that life is unpredictable. You know that relationships require effort. And you may have a much clearer idea of what you want the next chapter to look like.

Most importantly, you know that the opportunity to experience something beautiful doesn't disappear simply because you've been hurt before.

Third Time's the Charm

When I spoke with Joseph and Christine about their story, one phrase stood out: "Third time's the charm."

Those were their words, and I think they capture the spirit of their relationship beautifully.

For both of them, marriage hadn't worked out the first time. Or the second. They had each experienced the end of relationships they once believed would last, and they knew what it meant to face the uncertainty of beginning again.

Yet neither of them had reached an age at which love was no longer possible. Neither was disqualified from finding happiness because of a previous divorce. Their past experiences were part of their stories, but they didn't have to determine how those stories ended.

Their marriage is a beautiful reminder that life doesn't always unfold according to plan. Sometimes, the relationship you thought would last forever doesn't. Sometimes, the person you expected to grow old with turns out not to be your lifelong companion. And sometimes, after all the disappointment, you meet someone who makes you realize that the possibility of love was never gone.

It was simply waiting for a different chapter.

There is no shame in having loved and lost. There is no deadline for finding a partner, and there is no universal timeline for getting married. Whether you're 25, 45, 58, or 63, you deserve the opportunity to discover what happiness means to you.

Joey and Christine didn't need to have perfect relationship histories to deserve a beautiful wedding day. They didn't need to prove anything to anyone. They simply needed to decide that they wanted to spend their lives together.

And so, they did.

A Love Story Worth Celebrating at the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel

The Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in Puerto Rico looks even better during your elopement wedding.

On October 25, Joseph and Christine celebrated their marriage with an intimate elopement at the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Set along the Atlantic coastline, the Condado Vanderbilt offers an elegant setting for couples who want to celebrate their love in a place that feels special. Its distinctive architecture, refined atmosphere, and oceanfront surroundings make it an appealing choice for couples seeking a sophisticated destination wedding experience.

For Joseph and Christine, the significance of the occasion went far beyond the location. This wasn't simply another wedding. It was a celebration of the lives they had lived, the challenges they had overcome, and the decision to embrace a future together.

There is something particularly moving about photographing an intimate wedding for a couple who have already experienced so much of life. Their marriage isn't just about the excitement of a new beginning. It's also about the understanding that comes from experience, the appreciation of companionship, and the knowledge that the time you have together is precious.

When you've lived through different seasons of life, you may approach a wedding with a different perspective. You might be less concerned with meeting other people's expectations and more interested in celebrating what truly matters to you.

You may not need an elaborate guest list, a ballroom filled with hundreds of people, or a year of planning to make the occasion meaningful. Perhaps you simply want to exchange vows somewhere beautiful, share the moment with the person you love, and begin the next chapter on your own terms.

That's one of the things I love about elopements. They allow couples to create an experience that reflects their relationship rather than conforming to a predetermined idea of what a wedding should be.

And for couples like Joseph and Christine, that freedom can make all the difference.

Why It's Never Too Late to Elope in Puerto Rico

When people think about elopements, they often picture younger couples running away to get married, perhaps exchanging vows on a secluded beach or escaping to a romantic European destination. But elopements aren't reserved for any particular age group, relationship history, or stage of life.

In fact, an intimate wedding can be an especially wonderful option for mature couples, second-time brides and grooms, and people who have decided to get married later in life.

After navigating careers, raising children, building households, and experiencing the complexities of relationships, you may have a very different vision for your wedding than you did when you were younger. You might prefer an experience centered on the two of you rather than a large production involving hundreds of guests.

Perhaps you want to exchange vows somewhere warm, surrounded by beautiful scenery. Maybe you'd love to travel to a destination you've always wanted to visit. Or perhaps you'd rather invest in a memorable experience together than spend months coordinating a traditional wedding.

Whatever your reasons, eloping in Puerto Rico gives you the opportunity to celebrate your relationship in a tropical destination with beautiful coastlines, historic architecture, lush landscapes, and distinctive luxury hotels.

For couples traveling from the mainland United States, Puerto Rico also offers the convenience of a Caribbean destination without the need for a passport for U.S. citizens traveling directly from the mainland. Entry requirements and travel documentation can differ for other travelers, so it's worth confirming the requirements that apply to your circumstances.

You could exchange vows against the historic backdrop of Old San Juan, plan an intimate celebration at an oceanfront hotel like the Condado Vanderbilt, or escape to a quieter corner of the island for a more secluded experience.

Your wedding doesn't have to look like anyone else's. It can be elegant, adventurous, relaxed, spontaneous, or a combination of all four.

And if you've already been married before, you don't have to treat your next wedding as a lesser version of your first. This is a different relationship, a different chapter, and an opportunity to celebrate the life you're choosing to build together.

You get to decide what matters this time around.

The Escapade: An Intimate Wedding Experience Designed Around You

The lovebirds unwinding in their Presidential Suite at the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in Puerto Rico

For couples who love the idea of eloping in Puerto Rico, I've created something special: The Escapade.

The Escapade is my thoughtfully curated elopement experience for couples who want more than a quick ceremony and a handful of photographs. It's designed for those who want to turn their wedding into a meaningful experience, with the freedom to explore, enjoy their surroundings, and celebrate their relationship without the demands of a traditional wedding day.

The concept is simple: instead of dedicating your entire day to a conventional wedding schedule, you can enjoy a more flexible photography experience built around the moments and places that matter to you.

The Escapade features two photography sessions: a two-hour morning session and a two-hour afternoon session, with the ceremony taking place in the afternoon. This structure creates room for different settings, varied light, and a more relaxed approach to documenting your day.

Imagine beginning your wedding day with a leisurely exploration of Old San Juan, wandering through its colorful streets, admiring its historic architecture, and enjoying the experience of being somewhere beautiful together. Later, after time to relax and prepare for the ceremony, you could return for your vows and an afternoon photography session that captures the atmosphere of your celebration.

The experience also includes a wedding album and hair and makeup services, helping bring together the essential elements of an intimate destination wedding.

For couples getting married later in life, this approach can be particularly appealing. You don't have to spend months coordinating a large event or feel obligated to recreate a traditional wedding. Instead, you can focus on what makes this chapter meaningful to you.

Perhaps you're celebrating your first marriage together. Perhaps you're getting married again after a previous relationship ended. Or perhaps you've been together for years and have finally decided to make it official.

Whatever your story, The Escapade is an opportunity to celebrate your commitment with intention, intimacy, and beautiful photography.

It's also an invitation to make your wedding a travel experience. You can discover Puerto Rico together, enjoy its scenery and culture, and create memories that extend well beyond the ceremony itself.

Because your wedding isn't just about the moment you say, "I do." It's also about the beginning of everything that comes afterward.

Your Love Story Deserves to Be Documented, at Any Age

Popping bottles at the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel during their destination elopement wedding in Puerto Rico

As a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I have the privilege of documenting couples at one of the most meaningful moments of their lives. Every relationship is different, and every wedding tells a story that deserves to be approached with care.

Some couples have been together since they were teenagers. Others meet later in life, after careers, children, marriages, divorces, and countless experiences that have shaped who they are. Some celebrate with hundreds of guests, while others choose to exchange vows in a private ceremony with only a few people present.

None of these approaches is inherently more meaningful than another. What matters is that your wedding reflects the relationship you're celebrating.

Joseph and Christine's story is a wonderful reminder of that principle. Their journey wasn't defined by a perfect romantic timeline. It was defined by two people who had experienced life's complications and still found a reason to believe in the possibility of a shared future.

At 63 and 58, they weren't too old to fall in love. They weren't too experienced to be surprised by life. And they certainly weren't too late to begin another chapter together.

Their elopement at the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel was a celebration of that truth.

It's easy to think of love as something that belongs to a particular season of life. We grow up surrounded by stories about young couples meeting, falling in love, getting married, and living happily ever after. But real life is rarely that straightforward.

Sometimes, love takes a detour. Sometimes, it arrives after we've stopped looking. And sometimes, the person who makes us believe in it again is someone we meet when we least expect it.

If you're reading this after a divorce, after years of putting your family first, or after deciding that romance might no longer be in the cards, I hope you remember that your story isn't over simply because one chapter has ended.

You can still meet someone who makes you laugh. You can still discover a connection that feels right. You can still travel, explore, fall in love, and decide to spend your life with another person.

And if that person comes along, you can celebrate your marriage in a way that feels entirely your own.

Whether you're planning your first wedding, getting married again, or finally celebrating a relationship that has stood the test of time, Puerto Rico offers a beautiful setting for your next chapter.

As a Puerto Rico elopement photographer, I work with couples who want to create meaningful experiences and preserve their stories through timeless imagery. My approach is centered on documenting your connection, capturing the atmosphere of your surroundings, and creating photographs that allow you to revisit the experience for years to come.

If the thought of a traditional wedding feels overwhelming, The Escapade may be the perfect alternative. With two photography sessions, an intimate ceremony, a wedding album, and hair and makeup services, it's designed to help you experience your wedding day without the demands of a large celebration.

You don't need to be a certain age to elope. You don't need a particular relationship history. And you certainly don't need anyone else's permission to celebrate your love.

You simply need a reason to say yes to the next chapter.

If you're dreaming of an intimate wedding or elopement in Puerto Rico, I'd love to hear your story and help you create an experience that reflects who you are as a couple.

Because, as Joseph and Christine so beautifully reminded us, sometimes the third time really is the charm.

And it's never too late for love.
